Champions League action returns to the Principality

Champions League action returns to Monaco on Wednesday as AS Monaco attempt to overturn a 2-1 first-leg deficit against Fenerbahçe.

The Turkish giants managed to record a slender 2-1 victory in the first leg in Istanbul last week, but Radamel Falcao’s crucial away goal means the Stade Louis II side still have every chance of qualifying for the UEFA Champions League play-offs.

The former Manchester United star’s goal came sandwiched between two strikes by  Emmanuel Emenike, but OPTA stats show 50% of teams who lose their Champions League first leg by that scoreline go on to qualify at home in the return leg.

Unfortunately, Wednesday’s match will be played without the presence of the Fenerbahce supporters. Due to several incidents in recent years, the Turkish side’s fans have been banned from Monaco, and indeed the entire Alpes-Maritimes area, from midnight Monday August 1 until midnight Wednesday 3 August.

However, for all those Monaco fans thinking of cheering on the Red and Whites this week – there’s no time to waste! Purchase a season ticket before this Wednesday’s return leg and attend the Fenerbahce match for free.

Whatever happens, Leonardo Jardim’s  men will definitely be involved in a second European game at the end of August. All that remains to be seen is whether it will be in the Champions League or Europa League.
