Hardly the Grand Prix...
2009-09-21 23:11
For those who like to imagine zipping along the Riviera coast with the roof down and hair in the wind, there’s been nothing but frustration for the last few weeks at the snail’s pace of traffic along the Basse Corniche.
From nine in the morning till four in the afternoon, jams have vastly slowed down vehicles along Boulevard Charles III, causing inconvenience to the Principality’s employees and tourists alike
The reason? Trenches have had to be dug to accommodate water, gas, street lighting and phone lines, and the result has been to divert traffic from bd Charles III to bd Rainier III before using the western part of the ridge leading to the roundabout next to Aureglia rue Grimaldi.
"The period for the roadworks was carefully studied to generate the least possible traffic," reports Christophe Cauvin, head of the traffic regulation centre.
Roadworks are expected to be completed by 4 September.
