Little Red Riding Hood fleeces Vallauris granny
2009-10-22 11:22
An octogenarian woman living in Vallauris, in the neighbourhood of Cannes, put all her confidence in a young mother who took charge of all her daily practical needs - including her finances.
Alas, the young housewife was crippled by debt, and while doing the old lady's weekly shopping could not resist the temptation of making her own purchases on her account.
When she encountered no difficulties in accessing the account, there was no hesitation in inviting her mother-in-law to join in, and between them the two women bought camcorders and digital cameras, all on the credit card of the 80-year old. Inspired by their boldness, the confidence tricksteresses next laid hands on the chequebook, and finally siphoned off all of the old woman's savings by making internet transfers to their accounts.
The swindle went on for six weeks, and was called to a halt only after the young woman paid an invoice in her own name but using grandma's 'Carte Bleue', a mistake which led to her unmasking by police. According to first indications from the inquiry, the total transfers amounted to about €40,000.
