Nostalgia Trip at the Galerie Carré Doré
2011-04-20 16:04
What:
Nostalgia by Gregori Maiofis
Where:
Galerie Carré Doré
When: Until 7 May
Web: www.carredor-monaco.com
In the last few years, the Russian artist Gregori Maiofis has built something of reputation for his delicate photographic compositions in which juxtaposed images give rise to an altered sense of reality. Originally working with digital photography, he has since turned his attention to established early forms of printing such as the bromoil process, in which silver bromide paper is chemically treated and then inked to produce a soft, paint-like quality. His latest work plays on such processes to create an other-worldly feel, as if one is surrounded by ghosts.

The influence of Magritte and other surrealists is notable in his series of canvas prints, including
Nostalgia, his current show which runs until 7 May at the excellent Galerie Carré Doré in Monaco. If you can't be here, don't despair. Maiofis's growing international reputation means his works can be found in the Houston Museum of Contemporary
Art, the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art, the Fine Art Museum of
Santa Barbara, the Slovak National Gallery in Bratislava, and twelve
regional state art museums throughout Russia.
