In 1994, Prince Rainier opened the Japanese garden, designed by Yasuo Beppu, on Avenue Pincesse Grace. This wonderful oasis has a truly authentic feel, including a number of flowering cherries, the gift of the Japanese ministry.
Traditional garden features to look out for include the wall (Heï) with bamboo fencing (Takégaki) that stands for fragility and simplicity, the main gate (Shô-mon), the stone lanterns (Tôrô), the lake (Iké) with its islands (Shima); and the Tea house (Chatshitsu).
Plants include olive and cherry trees, conifers, azaleas, rhododendrons and camellias, all pruned according to the Japanese tradition.
