Hot on the heels of the Cannes Film Festival comes its small-screen equivalent, the 51st Monte Carlo Television Festival, which takes place from 6 to 10 June and provides not only a forum for the industry but also an opportunity to reward the best TV dramas and comedies of the preceding year. Thirty-eight programmes are nominated this year, representing the very highest standards of production from 21 countries. The entire list of nominees is available on the official website

David Tomatis, CEO of the Festival, is particularly pleased with this year's lineup: "These drama and comedy series are of the highest quality and represent the diversity in its best of international production". The winners will be announced during the Golden Nymph Awards Ceremony on Friday 10th June 2011.

Highlights of the festival include the TV Xchanges - a unique gathering of producers, programme developers and institutions - and special screenings of new and forthcoming series, in the presence of the stars.

There are a number of awards up for grabs in five categories: Film, Mini-Series, News, Drama and Comedy.  Prizewinners receive a statuette in the form of the Golden Nymph (above) which has an important local connection: its sculptor François-Joseph Bosio -  who became official portraitist to Napoleon and whose works are to be found today in the Louvre - was born in Monaco.

The festival itself was the brainchild of Prince Rainier III, who saw it as an opportunity to promote peace among the nations, and the opening film always reflects this engagement between the media and the real world. This year is no exception: Nick Renton's BBC/RTE co-production 'When Harvey Met Bob' tells the true story of the relationship between Bob Geldof, lead singer of the Boomtown Rats, and music promoter Harvey Goldsmith as they put together the historic 1985 Live Aid concert.
