And of course, Henry the Horse dances the waltz

2010-01-20 16:30

In January, Monaco once more hosts its spectacular circus festival, and at a meeting last week at the Columbus Hotel, the message to the press-hounds - or should that be wolf-pack? - of reporters was simple: circus animals are just like other performers and their rights should be respected.

The Fédération Mondiale du Cirque (World Circus Federation), whose slogan is 'Promoting the Art of Happiness', made its message clear at the meeting, which was attended by important names from the circus world, and presided over by Princess Stephanie of Monaco.

'This festival was founded by my my father Prince Rainier III, recognizing the major role circus has to play in European and world culture.'

The princess went on to say that she recognized the duty to look after the animals which are, after all, among the best-loved circus acts.

'I'm conscious of the problems with animals in circuses, but in my personal experience, those I meet who have a responsibility for the animals are dedicated to their charges, with whom they develop a real rapport from birth'.  In certain cases, when things did not turn out so well, it was important to be able to guarantee the animals' well-being with a strict application of government regulations, she added.

This year the circus will feature seals with a sense of humour, doves of several varieties who take visible pleasure in their aerial antics, the famous Tajik horses, white lions and elephants; but also of course a number of fine human specimens specially chosen for their ability to entertain!

Come along to the Big Top from 14 - 24 January 2010 in Fontvieille!
