Each May, the
Palais des Festivals in Cannes becomes the focus of the world's attention as the home of the
Cannes Film Festival. But it doesn't close down as soon as the red carpet has been rolled up: au contraire, the venue offers a year-round programme of fifty major events from October to April, and a stunning summer festival from June to August comprising the International Fireworks Festival, Musical Nights of the Suquet, the Pantiero Indie Music Festival, Jazz at Domergue, and the Festival of Russian Art.
The original Palais des Festivals, located on the boulevard of La Croisette on the present site of the Palais Stéphanie, was built in 1949 to host the Film Festival, but in 1982 a new building was constructed, with further extensions in 1999 and 2006. The latest of these, the Rotonde Lerins, gives unspoilt views over the sea and brings the total area of the centre to 28,000 square metres.
