And the Palme d'Or goes to ... the Cannes Film Festival - after the Oscars certainly the best known film awards ceremony in the world. Every year the French Riviera plays host to some of the best known film directors, actors, writers and technicians in what has to be one of the most glamorous occasions of any social calendar.
Interesting fact: the festival was supposed to begin in Cannes in 1939, but due to the war, the launch date was put off. Finally, on 20 September 1946 the Festival de Cannes opened its doors, the first great international cultural event of the post-war period.
