If eating is one of the greatest of pleasures, preparing to eat is arguably a greater one. And here in Monaco you have a kaleidoscopic choice of markets offering the very finest fresh ingredients for a picnic, or to stock your larder or boat.
In Monaco itself the main markets for food, fruit, vegetables, flowers, fresh produce are the Marché de la Condamine (Tel: 00 377 93 30 63 94) Place d'Armes (open daily from 6.00 in the morning to noon); and the Monte-Carlo fruit and veg market (Tel: 00 377 93 25 46 45) Avenue Saint Charles.
As well as food, the coast is bristling with markets selling a wide range of other goods. If it's bric-a-brac you're after, try the appropriately named Les Puces (flea market) on Saturdays at the Quai Jean-Charles Rey, Fontvielle, from 9.30am to 5.30 pm. Ventimiglia on the Italian border, easily accessible by car or train, has a mammoth market selling almost everything you can imagine - possibly even mammoths.
