Bistrot Tartine, Monaco

The circuit of the Monaco Grand Prix may seem like a strange place to have dinner al fresco, but the section of the harbour along Quai Albert 1er makes for a stunning backdrop to any meal.

Bistrot Tartine is one of a handful of fantastic modern restaurants along the port side. The interior of the restaurant is a pleasing blend of rustic Italian charm and cutting edge London gastro pub and is a great refuge from the midday sun. However, the beautiful backdrop of Port Hercule and Monte Carlo beyond is the real place to be seated on a summer evening.

A crisp glass of champagne arrives with a wicker basket of beef tomatoes, mozzarella and fresh basil (a kind of DIY tomate mozza) - the presentation is extraordinary. For the main course, I opted for the special of the day: swordfish with ratatouille. The fish was cooked medium-rare, as recommended by the chef, and was simply outstanding; plenty of bite as you would expect from a good fillet steak and bursting with flavour. The ratatouille was light, fragrant and balanced the fish perfectly.

Lychee sorbet, a noisette and a stroll past the luxury yachts formed the perfect end to a most enjoyable evening.
