Monaco's Eco Art Parade takes wing to Singapore

2010-08-30 14:21

What: Eco Art Bijoux Parade
Where: Singapore (until 10 September 2010)
Auction: Abu Dhabi (13 November 2010)

A display of some of the world's most beautiful jewellery, inspired by the world's most beautful birds, has recently moved from Monaco to Singapore on the second leg of this year's Eco-Art Parade.

The Eco-Art movement began in Monaco in 2008 when 35 international artists displayed their works in the Place du Casino  before auctioning them off to raise funds for environmental and humanitarian charities.  The idea was repeated last year with enormous success when a total of €650,000 was realized at a Sotheby's sale of the vast eagle sculptures which formed the centrepiece of the 2009 show.

This year, the Eco-Art Parade has taken on an international flavour, with Prince Albert of Monaco presenting the collection in Singapore and then Abu Dhabi, where this year's auction will take place on 13 November. His Excellency Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak Al-Nahayan explains the thinking behind the sale: "We have the responsibility, indeed the duty, to be worthy custodians of the natural resource that was entrusted to us, and we must continue to find ways to protect our natural environment."

One of those ways is the Eco Art Bijoux Parade, which contains 35 unique pieces of jewellery honouring two princes of the air, the Asiatic Hornbill and the Saker Falcon. The collection was conceived and created by outstanding designers and artists such as gem explorer and adventurer Yianni Melas, Nupur, Poonam Soni, Tomasz Donocik, Ranya Sarakbi, Kholoud Kurdi Osama, Matthew Campbell Laurenza, Dezso, Miss Bibi, Pomellato and Kenzo.

The Singapore display ends on 10 September, after which the jewels can be seen in Abu Dhabi from 10 November in the spectacular Yas Hotel. Proceeds from the auction will be divided between five charities in all: the Prince Albert ll of Monaco Foundation, the Una Energy Children’s Fund (UNECF), the Hafiz Foundation, an environmental foundation in the UAE, and crucially BirdLife International, which strives to protect birds such as the Hornbill and the Saker Falcon which inspired this collection.

Margowski, the Monaco and London-based jewellers, are guest curators of this year's travelling exhibition, and also sponsors of the beautiful Courtship of the Hornbill ring made by up-and-coming London designer Tomasz Donocik.

Spanning three fingers, the playfully-executed ring depicts the magnificent hornbill taking part in a courtship ritual. A true work of modern alchemy, the ring is crafted from 18-carat rose gold inlaid with yellow, black and white diamonds and rubies. The bird's bill is made from the tusk of a prehistoric Siberian mammoth.  The ring's unique shape challenges traditional notions of ring design without losing any of the consummate elegance that has come to be expected from this rising star of jewellery design.

If you would like to attend the auction, Eco Art is offering a five day package from 11-15 November. Included is a private charter from Nice, a double room in the Yas Marina hotel, attandance at the vernissage, cocktails and auction, and at the the Abu Dhabi F1 Grand Prix.
