'Made in Italy' at the Grimaldi Forum

2011-12-12 15:44

What: Made in Italy: an exhibition of Italian Style
Where: Espace Diaghilev, Grimaldi Forum
When 9 December 2011 to 2 January 2012

This year sees the 150th Anniversary of the Unification of Italy, and the Italian Embassy in Monaco is celebrating the event by organizing a major exhibition at the Grimaldi Forum on the theme of Italian Style.

For much of the twentieth century, Italian designers set the pace for the rest of the world in almost any area you care to name - fashion, furniture, film, food, fast cars - the Italians seem to have it all sewn up. Top luxury brands such as Gucci, Armani, Prada and Versace, car designers Ferrari, Maserati and Alfa Romeo, and film-makers Pasolini, Fellini, Visconti and Antonioni have redefined the world around us in unique, life-affirming ways - and that's even before you reach for your morning cup of Illy or Lavazza.

This major cultural event is a multimedia display combining paintings, posters, movies, design objects, photos and sculptures, all intended to highlight how the words 'Made in Italy' have cast their spell over a world of changing international trends in lifestyle and taste for a century and a half.

Artists represented include the futurists Umberto Boccioni and Fortunato Depero, the designer Giò Ponti, the photographer Carlo Mollino and many others. The exhibition also draws heavily on the archives of the Esposizione Universale Roma, Mussolini's ill-fated project to build a new Rome to the southwest of the city.

To complement the exhibition, the Carré Doré Gallery is presenting an exhibition of the work of artist Francesco Roggero (below)

The Grimaldi Forum is hosting this superb exhibition until 2 January - and if it leaves you hungering for more, well, Monaco is ideally placed for getting away from it all with a trip to Ventimiglia and beyond!
