Grace Kelly was a remarkable woman. The Oscar-winning star of some of Hollywood's best-loved films, her
marriage to Prince Rainier raised her to a near-iconic status as one of the world's most beautiful women, celebrated as much for her kindness and instinctive compassion as for her looks.
The news of her untimely death in 1982 was met with shock and sadness both in Monaco and in her home country of the United States.
Now, thirty years later, luxury jewellers and pen-makers
Montblanc have decided to honour the memory of Princess Grace with a special limited edition which will also continue her legacy by contributing to the artistic charity she founded, the Princess Grace Foundation-USA.
Only three unique jewellery sets, eight timepieces and three writing instruments have been manufactured, ensuring that these highly desirable objets d'art - described as 'feminine and timelessly elegant' - will appreciate in value long into the future. The central motifs of the collection are the Grace de Monaco Rose (the flower created in 1956 for Grace's wedding to Prince Rainier) and the princess's monogram, which appears on the case-backs of the watches, and on the cap-tops of the pens.
The jewellery set includes a necklace of pink sapphires and diamonds, earrings culminating in drop-cut pink sapphires and a matching bracelet. The watch has an elegant mother-of-pearl face set in an 18-ct pink gold case encrusted with over 250 diamonds and, like the jewellery set, combined with drop-cut pink sapphire. A Montblanc Diamond in the crown is the finishing touch.
Limited-edition writing instruments
The solid pale-gold fountain pen is an exquisite example of Montblanc's traditional craft, set off with lozenge-cut diamonds and rubies on the cap and barrel to represent the coat of arms of Monaco. The feminine modelling of the diamond clip reflects the elegance and beauty of Princess Grace, while additional elements are rendered in iridescent mother-of-pearl.
A further twenty-nine pens, in a rose lacquer and bearing the princess's monogram on cap and barrel, commemorate 1929, the year of Grace Kelly's birth in Philadelphia. These pens also have detailing in mother-of-pearl and are embellished with a beautiful drop-cut pink sapphire.
Finally comes a one-off special edition pen in deep purple resin, its gold-plated cap and barrel rings engraved with the traditional lozenges of Monaco and featuring a clip with a drop-cut pink topaz.
Montblanc invited 350 VIP guests from around the world to attend the spectacular international premiere of the Princess Grace Collection in Monaco on 8 September 2011.The collection is currently travelling around the world to be previewed in 23 Montblanc boutiques in Asia, Europe, North and Central America.
