On your marks... get set... go! Super sales in Monaco and Cannes by Laura Governatori
Crowds thronged Monaco this week for the start of the New year sales. In some shops it was difficult to move for the huge numbers of bargain hunters. The economic slump has seen some exceptional deals, with some boutiques offering 50-70% discounts on certain items - not surprising since reductions of this sort were made throughout December in order to boost Christmas shopping. To encourage regular sales-goers, shops remained open on Sunday 3 January, much to the chagrin of stores in neighbouring French towns for whom the sales period starts on 6 January.
Several luxury boutiques abstained from the feeding frenzy, not wishing to lose their exclusive clientele, though Céline and Levin were offering discounts of between 20 and 40 per cent. The sales continue for the next month, so get in quickly! It still pays to get there early!
Cannes Shopping Festival
Meanwhile, the Cannes Shopping Festival is gearing up for its 7th annual catwalk. Between January 7th and 10th, ten fashion shows, gala dinners and hotel packages will be on offer. Prestigious brands from Europe and the Middle East are expected on the podium of the Lérins Rotunda and will present their Spring and Summer collections to thousands of guests.
La Croisette and rue d’Antibes are at the hub of this gala event. Expect the streets to be decked out as beautifully as this year's models.
Programme
Diana Dorozkhina and Christophe Guillarme will inaugurate the opening evening (on Thursday, January 7th), Escada and Jean Claude Jitrois will follow (on Friday, January 8th), as well as eight stylists of the Middle-East fashion-week on Saturday, January 9th and Sunday, January 10tth
9th January : Robert Abi Nader (Beirut), with jewellers Gemayel (Lebanon) et Tufenkjian (Lebanon).
10th January : Haya Al Houti Couture (Kuwait) ; Adam Couture (Dubaï) and Mireille Dagher (Lebanon).
Plus:
- Gala dinner at the restaurant '1835 White Palm Hotel' in partnership with jewellers Julian et Fils
(January 7th);
- Gala dinner at the Carlton (January 9th);
- Private sales at the Palm Beach Casino (January 8th and 9th) with Italians and French designers;
- Brunch on Sunday, January 10th at the Relais of the hotel Martinez
