Well-known for its gourmet restaurants as well as its glamorous galleries, Monte Carlo is bringing together the best of both worlds in a new exhibition at the Carré Doré Gallery which will attract photographers and foodies in equal numbers. 'The Taste of Art' focuses exclusively on Food/Art photography, presenting four different artists who focus on images of food to make a serious artistic statement by means of humour, allusion and fantasy.
Konstantine Khudyakov (b.1945) is one of Russia's most prominent contemporary artists. The inventor of
'multi-touch' art, Khudyakov here presents his 'New Russian Alphabet', a schematic tour of the baroque curves and swashes of his native Cyrillic, but made of rotting banana skins. His 'alphabet of waste' is an original commentary on what he sees as the intellectual and cultural decline of contemporary Russian society.
Carl Warner (b.1963) is an artist who draws what seem conventional landscapes using classic compositional techniques - but, much like his renaissance equivalent Arcimboldo, assembled out of fruit and vegetables. 'I need to fool the viewer into thinking it is a real scene at first glance - it's the realization that the scene is in fact made of food that brings a smile to the viewer, and for me that’s the best part.' Warner's vegetal landscapes have been making headlines in his native England and further afield.
The American Christopher Boffoli (b. 1969) juxtaposes miniature toy figures with landscapes of food in his series of photographs 'Disparity'. 'The initial reaction to the photos is often amusement,' he explains. 'People imagine a huge chocolate cake next to them, or an Oreo cookie big enough to use as a raft, floating in a glass of milk - but I hope that the most profound effect is to compel viewers to look more closely at the world around them and explore deep truths about our relationship with what nourishes us.'
The youngest of the artists represented, Hermine Björkman (b. 1982) from Sweden, approaches the subject of beauty in society through her images. Aiming to counter the stereotype of culinary photography, she mixes together the worlds of illusion, food and fashion in a work realized exclusively for the Gallery Carré Doré.
The exhibition, which is open Tuesday to Saturday from 2pm to 7pm, runs until 24 November.
