"Fairytale" by
Joana Vasconcelos, this year's enthralling summer show from the
Ecole Superieure d'Arts Plastiques, includes five large scale
works of the artist emblematic of her extraordinary imaginative vision.
From the spectacular installation 'Loft', to the glamorous 'Marilyn', the artist offers a unique perspective on consumer society, with its stylish but ultimately illusory glamour, and asks the viewer to re-assess their role in judging between style and substance.
In the world of Vasconcelos, delicate and expensive lace, which in the past might have graced a wedding dress, is used to dress a bizarre range of objects, from lizards to pianos, while the stiletto-heeled silver shoe straight from the pages of Cinderella is conversely rendered entirely out of stainless steel kitchenware. The 'fairytale' world of the glitzy shopfront is not always what it seems.
Joana Vasconcelos exhibits from 10 July to 4 September 2011 in Monaco's
Pavillon Bosio, the builsing named after one of the Principality's most famous classical sculptors. I wonder what he would make of his 21st century successor?
