Ocean Medical unit provides reassurance at sea

2010-10-01 14:10

If you or someone you know falls serously ill at sea, the experience can be both traumatic and potentially highly expensive.  As for the patient himself, getting a swift medical response can sometimes be a matter of life and death. That's where telemedicine systems come in, providing medical expertise and reassurance by remote control.

During this year's Monaco Yacht Show, Ocean Medical International will be giving first aid procedures and live demonstrations of their telemedicine unit. Procedures such as resuscitation techniques, suturing, injection-giving, and pulse oximetry will be incorporated with live demos of the Safe Triage System Telemedicine monitoring unit (STS Lite).

The STS Lite Telemedicine unit is a state-of-the-art electronic communications device which monitors the vital signs of a patient and transmits live to a call centre manned 24/7 by doctors and surgeons. Designed to be used by non-medically trained personnel, the unit also includes features such as photo and video-transmission, first aid procedures and a medication database in a simple-to-operate touch-screen device.

A scenario will be demonstrated where a 'patient' is assessed remotely with a doctor recommending treatment. The 'patient' can choose from a range of conditions, such as chest pain, breathlessness, collapse or fall injuries, while the doctor monitors the patient's vital signs transmitted from the telemedicine unit.
