As the historic home of the Formula 1 Grand Prix and the Monte Carlo Rally, and annual events such as Top Marques and inter, Monaco has built an enviable reputation as the European capital of the motor car. With over 30,000 visitors expected, the Monaco Motor show is one of the highlights of the year. And just as every Grand Prix has its Historic Grand Prix, and every Monte Carlo Rally its ‘Rallye Historique’, so the Monaco Motor Show is partnering for the third year running with a classic car event: Monaco Motor Legend.
Like the Motor Show's website, Port Hercule has been split between the two events. On either side of the harbour (where the pits are located for the Monaco Grand Prix), the twin car shows are taking place from 8 to 11 March.
Monaco Motor Legend comprises a tented area for vintage and classic motorcycles as well as an area of extremely collectable classic cars - all very rare - and very pricey. But you don't have to break the bank to enjoy the experience: you can live the automobile legend by coming to watch the Monte Carlo Concours d'Elegance, a splendid parade in period cars held on Sunday 11 March.

Christmas chaos as extreme weather blocks Riviera roads

The A8 motorway in both directions between La Turbie and Menton was closed for a period on Friday and Saturday following a heavy snowfall. And with the closure of the A500 tunnel, not only were hundreds of trucks stranded but also access to Monaco was effectively cut off from the North.
Going to Italy, access lanes were closed at Nice Saint-Augustin, Nice Saint-Isidore, Nice nord, Nice and Roquebrune; while vehicles coming from Ventimiglia in the direction of Aix were diverted as the ramp was closed at Menton. Black ice as well as snow made all these routes particularly hazardous.
With the coming of sunshine at the weekend, the tunnel was re-opened, but authorities were still urging caution, particularly on routes to the ski resorts north of Nice, not only because of weather conditions, but also because of the backlog of some 800 lorries and trucks.

Imperial edict

The small commune of Imperia takes a lead by banning traffic from historic centre
Paolo Strescino, the centre-right mayor of the commune of Imperia and his urban development councillor Emilio Broccoletti want a radical change to the structure of their town - to ban all car traffic from the town centre.
'We don't just want to chnage the look of the place by adding flowerbeds and streetlamps: the actual shape is to change - new parks, car-parks and pedestrian precincts, roundabouts and a whole new layout', stressed M. Broccoletti.
A series of studies undertaken by architectural consultants comprises a solution which is at once aesthetic and functional, realigning public spaces and adding value to the historic Ligurian town.
Those in charge of the project have revealed that the first step will be the opening of a new car-park situated below the Piazza Nazionale, due to open in January. Little by little traffic and petrol stations will be removed from the centre, leaving it free for pedestrians.
For the town it's the answer to the increasing traffic jams which have made the centre of the historic town unmanageable.
Modern Imperia is in fact two different towns on either side of the river Impero (from which it gets its name), which were reunited in 1923. The mediaeval township of Oneglia was part of Doria and belonged to the Dukes of Savoie in the sixteenth century; the other district was Porto Maurizio, a town with close links to Genoa, named after St Maurice.
After Nice reverted to France, Imperia became the capital of the region which now bears its name, occupying an equivalent position to Nice on the other side of the border.
