A new home for the Yacht Club de Monaco

HSH Prince Albert of Monaco announces the latest developments for Norman Foster's grand design
Friday 8 June 2012 will live long in the memory of Monaco. To celebrate World Oceans Day, Port Hercule became even more of a focus of maritime activity than usual, with Dragon Boats and rowing demonstrations, a parade of international swimmers, and a live broadcast on French television from the schooner 'Bel Espoir'. The highlight - at least for 1000 members of the prestigious Yacht Club de Monaco - was the traditional summer cocktail, which this year had a special flavour, as the club's president HSH Prince Albert made clear in his opening speech:
'This being World Oceans Day, I wanted us to be here together in the outer harbour, facing our new building, not only to show our attachment to the sea but also to confirm my desire that we should have a new Clubhouse. Today we are celebrating completion of the shell of that building. This new landmark in the heart of the Principality also has a duty and key role to play in animating and promoting both of Monaco’s harbours.
'The building is fortunate to bear the prestigious signature of Sir Norman Foster, and I would like to congratulate all the services involved for the work accomplished to date, crowning the efforts made over several years towards the redevelopment of the harbour's facilities. Delivery of the new building represents one of the major milestones in the restructuring of the future appearance of the harbour. Completion of this architectural gem symbolizes the Principality’s ambition to confirm its role as the capital of yachting.'
The Minister for the Environment and Urban Planning, Marie-Pierre Gramaglia, was able for the first time to add specific detail about the layout: the new building is to include a clubhouse, restaurants, bars, meeting rooms, a pool and a 150-space car park. It will also be home to the Sailing School, with changing rooms, workshop and sail loft, and the Société Nautique with its own restaurant/snack bar, cloakroom and boathouse.
'The building’s shell is almost complete', she added. 'The next phases are
weather-proofing, installing the masts and boom on the roof’s west side,
and erecting the metal structure for the atrium’s monumental staircase.
The glass façade will be done in the autumn and then the finishing
works can begin.'
As a vigorous campaigner for the environment, HSH Prince Albert has taken a special interest in the construction of the new building, which abides by HQE (Haute Qualité Environnementale) standards, to minimize both noise pollution and use of energy and water. His concluding remarks remarked on the Club's significance:
'Occupying a special position between tradition and modernity, the Yacht Club de Monaco, with 1,200 members from 56 nationalities, enjoys an international reputation. The dynamic force and rich variety driving our Club lies in the cultural diversity of its members and the outstanding quality of its fleet of pleasure boats and superyachts. I very much want us to further develop our training courses for young people and to raise their awareness of the maritime world, as well as supporting owners and their crews through our 'Belle Classe' brand. We have so many assets. Let us now start preparing to board our new building on the other side of the harbour and set sail for new horizons.'
Of course, Monaco has long been a major destination for the yachting
world, not only as headquarters of the most important designers and
brokers, but also as home and favoured port-of-call for many of the
world's most prestigious superyachts. The Yacht Club de Monaco unites
many of these magnificent craft under its pennant, including a quarter
of those featured in the list of the 100 biggest private yachts, and as
such occupies a unique position in the international luxury yachting
sector. Acting as a link between all those who love the sea, the YCM’s self-proclaimed mission is to support professionalism at every level, and unite all
those involved in yachting around its 'art de vivre la mer'.

International Showjumping in Monaco

One of the highlights of the equestrian year takes place from 28-30 June
What: 17th Monte Carlo International Showjumping
Where: Port Hercule
When: 28-30 June 2012
Horses and Monaco go hoof in hand: rub the knee of Louis XIV’s silver steed in the Hôtel de Paris, and it’s supposed to bring you luck at the Casino. But if you want to experience true horsemanship, make sure you’re at the Port of Monaco from 28 to 30 June, when for the seventeenth year the principality will be hosting a key stage of the Global Champions Tour.
From Doha to Abu Dhabi, by way of Valencia, Hamburg and Shanghai, this is one of the most magnificent of international sporting competitions - and one of the most lucrative. Founded in 2006 by Olympic gold medallist Jan Tops, the GCT brings together the top forty riders in the Rolex rankings to
compete in a series of shows that aim to provide the very best in
showjumping. In 2010 the leader of the GCT rankings
received €300,000, the biggest single prize in any of the
three Olympic equestrian disciplines (dressage, eventing and
showjumping). During this season, the eventual champion, Marcus Ehning,
won over €500,000 in total prize money over the nine shows.
Port Hercule, with its superb backdrop of sails and superyachts, provides the most elegant of settings for this leg of the competition and the perfect location for both competitors and spectators. The specially-constructed showjumping arena is set up between the Swimming Pool and La Rascasse immediately below the dramatic Rock of Monaco and the Prince’s Palace.About the show

Showjumping is one of the three major equestrian disciplines, in which horses and riders jump over a pre-defined course of 10 to 16 jumps, each up to 6ft 6in (2m) high. Competitors must complete the course while trying to avoid penalties for knocking down rails, refusals to jump or exceeding the time limit.
The course is designed with many challenging turns and obstacles to test the mental and physical agility of horse and rider; and of course timing is essential, the great skill being to calculate with precision the exact number of steps taken in the lead-up to a jump.
As well as the prestigious Grand Prix du Prince, this year's event will see the award, for the second time, of the must-see Pro-Am Cup, sponsored by Prince Albert's niece,
Charlotte Casiraghi. Among the riders to look out for are the 38-year-old Australian Edwina Alexander, who married Jan Tops last September; 37-year-old
Marco Kutscher
from Saxony, and 31-year-old French rider and World Cup silver medallist Kévin Staut who features in the video below.

In 2000, the Mare Nostrum International Swimming competition in Monaco was the setting for the first meeting of Prince Albert II and the woman who would one day become his princess. While we can't guarantee romance for every spectator, there will certainly be as much electricity in the air as some of the best swimmers in the world take to the pool at the Stade Louis II.
The elite of the sport will be gathering in Monaco for the final episode ofthe three-stage international swimming meet, earlier legs of which are held in Barcelona and Canet. Prizes totalling €21000 are awarded at a Gala dinner on the Sunday.

Among the notable entries this year are a number of recent World Champions including Australia's Marieke Guehrer (2009 50m butterfly World Champion), Brent Hayden from Canada (2007 100m freestyle World Champion), and - from Princess Charlene's South Africa - Cameron van der Burgh (2009 50m breaststroke World Champion).
Continuing this gallery of sporting heroes, France is represented by Camille Muffat (200m freestyle World Champion), Great Britain by Liam Tancock (50m backstroke World Champion), and Sweden by Therese Alshammar (2011 50m freestyle World Champion).
And that's only the start. More than a dozen countries are participating, with several of them sending national teams. If you don't have tickets to see the swimming at the London Olympics, this is the next best thing!

You can read more of the fascinating early history of the race here.
Of all Formula One events, the Monaco Grand Prix is acknowledged to
provide the greatest thrills, not least because its course takes it
literally around the town on roads normally bustling with tourist
traffic.
Compared with those races run on dedicated racetracks, there’s a slight compromise in speed and overtaking, since the circuit is so perilously narrow – but the
proximity of real life to the supercharged world of F1 is simply too
inviting. For newcomers and veteran spectators alike, watching Monaco
can be the closest thing to actually participating as a driver.
This year, Monaco forms the sixth leg of the year-long Formula 1 season, two weeks after the Spanish Grand Prix at Montmelo and a fortnight before the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal. And already the season is shaping up to be one of the most fascinating and unpredictable in years.
From a technical point of view, changes in the rules and regulations have led to further controversial developments in the shape and design of the cars; and from a sporting perspective, there have already been a number of upsets in the rank order.
The programme below also contains side events such as the GP2 series, which acts not only as a curtain raiser to the main event but also showcases emerging talent, with many of its drivers using the series as a stepping stone to full scale Formula 1 after a year or two. For visitors to Monaco this year, there has been the added attraction of the biennial Grand Prix Historique.

This week sees the 80th Monte Carlo Rally (17-22 January), followed by its counterpart the 15th Rallye Historique (28 Jan-4 Feb)
The Monte Carlo Rally is generally considered to be one of the most prestigious - and demanding - of all motor races. Stretching over 1300 kilometres, 430 of which are in special timed stages, the rally - which this year once more forms part of the World Rally Championship - is one of the most thrilling events of the sporting year.
One of its most spectacular and notorious stages, from La Bollène-Vésubie to Sospel, takes place on a steep mountain road with multiple hairpin bends, passing over the usually icebound Col de Turini, which has been the scene of not a few dramatic incidents and hairsbreadth escapes over the hundred years in which the race has been run.Bryan Bouffier and Xavier Panseri receive the 2011 trophy from Prince Albert I
The world-famous rally was first run in 1911 under the patronage of Prince Albert I, great-grandfather of the present prince of Monaco, with the aim of attracting visitors to the Principality, as well as giving car manufacturers the opportunity of testing new technologies.
Financed by the Société des Bains de Mer, the original rally was organized (as it still is 101 years later) by the Automobile Club of Monaco. The club’s founding president Alexandre Noghès - whose son Antony would later emulate his father by setting up the Monaco Grand Prix - had come up with the idea of a motor race run in the winter months.
Given the region’s narrow mountain roads, cliffs with sheer drops of hundreds of feet, as well as snow and ice, this was to be a real test. But the format proved an enormous success – and the race has been run in January ever since. For more about the history of the race, please see this article from last year's CityOut

What: Golden Foot Awards 2011
Where: Fairmont Hotel, Monte Carlo
When: 8pm Monday 11 October 2011
Hollywood has the Oscars, London the Baftas, and Monaco … the Golden
Foot. Sounds comical, but this award for footballing prowess is yet
another example of the way in which the Principality has re-aligned
itself in modern times as a centre of international excellence.
Founded only eight years ago, the prestigious Foot is awarded to a
player of international calibre, over 29 years old, who has demonstrated
not only outstanding athletic ability but also the esteem and respect
of the public and his peers. The first eight recipients of the title are justly celebrated: Roberto
Baggio, Pavel Nevĕd, Andriy Shevchenko, Ronaldo, Alessandro del Piero,
Roberto Carlos, Ronaldhino, and Francesco Totti.
Last night, at a star-studded ceremony in Monaco, Manchester United's Ryan Giggs became the ninth player to pick up the award. 'I have been fortunate to play alongside great players, play for the greatest manager and play for the best club in the world,' he said. 'It's a great honour to win such an award, and to have my footprints alongside those of some of the greatest football players is a real privilege.
'I suppose I will have to start thinking about retirement soon but at the moment I am still enjoying my football. If it all finished tomorrow I could say that I have had a fantastic career and wouldn't swap it with anybody. I'm enjoying it now just like I was when I was 17.'
Ten players are nominated each year by a special jury - but also by fans through the official website, www.goldenfoot.com, and then voted on over the course of three months. The winning player leaves a permanent impression of himself on the seafront in the form of a footprint in bronze. And it's well worth a visit to The Champions' Promenade, since it's not only the Foot winners who are represented there but many more of the world's greatest players. There are even what one Internet wit has called 'The Feet of God' - the imprints of Diego Maradona!2011 Winner: Ryan Giggs2011 NomineesDavid BECKHAMEnglandLA Galaxy (USA)Gianluigi BUFFONItalyJuventus FCDidier DROGBAIvory CoastChelsea FCIker CASILLASSpainReal Madrid CFRyan GIGGSWalesManchester UnitedSamuel ETO'OCameroonFC Anzhi MakhachkalaGonzalez Bianco RAULSpainFC Schalke 04Charels PUYOLSpainBarcelona FCXavi HERNANDEZSpain Barcelona FC Xavier ZANETTI Argentina FC Internazionale

Monaco Classic Week 2011 under sail

What: Monaco Classic Week - La Belle ClasseWhere: Port Hercule
When:14-18 September 2011Nothing beats the thrill of a major yachting event. Whether it’s traditional rigged craft, the latest luxury super-yachts or the speed and power of oceangoing racing that fires you up, there’s no doubt: the Côte d'Azur is the place to be.
Monaco has built up an unassailable reputation as the principality of yachting. Since the earliest days of regatta racing here in the 1860s, the involvement and support of the royal family has brought prestige, tradition and a sense of occasion. Albert I of Monaco founded the Oceanographic Institute and oversaw the first regattas on the Riviera, while Prince Rainier III was the first president of the Yacht Club de Monaco. Today, H.S.H. Prince Albert II continues that long association between the princes and the sea. As a result, Monaco is richly blessed with a full calendar of yachting events year round, culminating in the annual Monaco Yacht Show. But every two years another even takes place which truly recalls the glory days of traditional sail yachting. Monaco Classic Week celebrates that heritage with hundreds of meticulously restored traditional sloops, yawls, ketches and schooners, competing in a variety of events in the third week of September.
2009’s Classic Week was particularly special for the organizing committee of the Yacht Club de Monaco, as it marked the centenary of its flagship Tuiga, a 15-metre gaff cutter. Though a hundred years old, she is still in excellent shape, having won last year's Westward Cup at Cowes.
Built in 1909 by the great Clyde boatbuilder William Fife for the Spanish Duke of Medinaceli, the boat was modelled exactly on King Alfonso XIII’s royal yacht Hispania (1908), so that the two could race together - (though diplomatically, the Duke made sure Tuiga always came second!) After a long history of refits – many of them destructive - Tuiga (whose name means ‘tiara’ in Samoan) was completely refitted in Southampton, following William Fife’s original plans. This year both yachts will be on show during Classic week.Tuiga; photograph by Donan Raven
.
Following in the wake of the Tuiga celebrations, 2011 will also see a centenary - this time of the magnificent 38m gaff cutter Mariquita (1911), the last known survivor of the 19m class. The reunion of these three vessels designed by master builder William Fife will certainly be a sight to behold.
In total 80 vessels will be attending; a melange of motorboats,
motoryachts and sailing boats, including newcomers from Chris Craft and
Hacker Boats. The regularity and manoeuvrability trials as well as the other events will be very similar to those held in 1904; the crew who most elegantly apply and respect the codes of naval etiquette will be judged by a panel including princesses and artists; and a chefs' competition will underline the importance of living and eating well on board.
Throughout the week, timed races will see gaff cutters, sloops, ketches, yawls and schooners compete off the coast of Monaco. It's a guaranteed spectacle, as, for the first time, the Race Committee plans to alternate the starts according to rig type, not rating. As is traditional, the winners will be awarded timepieces by the famous watchmaker Hublot.
With all these activities you might imagine there would be little respite for owners, skippers, captains and crews. But after battling it out on the high seas there will be a chance for them to meet on shore at the prestigious “La Belle Classe” evening and the “Nuit du Yachting” hosted at the Oceanographic Museum, when the coveted “Personnalité de la Mer” prize is awarded.

A week of both tradition and yachting lifestyle, Monaco Classic Week is one of the most thrilling and beautiful events hosted in the Principality. Strolling along the quay on the south side of Port Hercule will offer a glimpse into the past, the golden age brought vividly back to life through the work of careful restoration of these magnificent sailing yachts. And at the foot of their passerelles a number of vintage cars from the first Classic Lancia Torino to Monaco (above) will be on display, a nod to this year’s centenary celebrations of the Monte-Carlo Rally.

Rafael Nadal 6-4 7-5 David FerrerRafael Nadal's supreme reign over the Monte Carlo Tennis Masters was cemented yesterday when he beat fellow Spaniard David Ferrer in two sets, 6-4, 7-5. It was a moment to savour for the World number one as he put out the man who cost him a place in the semi-finals at the Australian Open in Melbourne this January. It was also Nadal's seventh successive victory at the Rolex-sponsored competition, which takes place annually at the Monte Carlo Country Club.
"To start the clay season like this is
fantastic, but it’s more fantastic to win Monte Carlo another time", said the champion. Success at Monte Carlo has become almost routine for the player, who dropped only one set (against Andy Murray in Saturday's semi-final) to win the title. At only 24, and once more at the top of his game, it's unlikely he'll be relinquishing this one in the near future.

Preview of the week
The 2011 Monte Carlo Rolex Tennis Masters is shaping up to be a fascinating tournament. Shortly after the world's top four players confirmed their appearance, Novak Djokovic, the world number two (and Monte Carlo resident) pulled out owing to injury. "It is a very sad moment not only for this tournament and my fans, but also for myself" said the Serb, who has just returned from a
well-deserved triumph over Nadal in Miami.
Particularly so since the Monte Carlo
lineup is deeper and stronger than for some years, with a raft of the
world's top players descending on the principality to try to knock off
Nadal's crown - or at least unsettle it. Among this week's
confirmations: Roger Federer (currently World number 3), Andy Murray (No
4) and Tomas Berdych (No 7).

In recent years, the Monte Carlo Masters competition (which is actually held just across the border in Roquebrune, France) has become synonymous with Nadal. Yet again, the presence of the World Number One on court will be an enormous draw, but there is a special reason for coming along this year. When he won in Monaco in 2010, Nadal became the only tennis player ever to have achieved six successive wins in the same tournament anywhere in the world, and this year he will be looking to cement that record with a seventh victory.
In 2009 the title was taken in an easy final set against Djokovic. But this was almost a formality for the man who put out the then World No 1 Roger Federer four times in succession in the same competition between 2006 and 2008.
In 2010, anticipating the treatment he would mete out to his compatriot in the US Open later that year, Nadal concluded matters with a straight sets win over fellow Spaniard Fernando Verdasco - but not without a fight on this particular point:

Agreement will keep Formula 1 in Monaco until 2022
After recent comments by Bernie Ecclestone were published in the Independent to the effect that Formula 1 'could do without Monaco', the future of the Monaco Grand Prix was thrown into turmoil. "The Europeans are going to have to pay more money or we will have to go somewhere else," Ecclestone had said.
That comment prompted a statement from the Automobile Club de Monaco effectively saying that no-one should panic until contracts were signed. Well, now that has happened. At a meeting in London, a ten-year agreement was rubberstamped today which assures Monaco of its slot in the prestigious racing calendar until at least 2022.

Motor racing has a long history in the Principality, going back over eighty years, and many avid fans still think of Monte Carlo as the definitive road race. It has been an annual fixture in the F1 World
Championship since 1955. Today's agreement means that - at least for the next decade, motor racing's coming home to where it belongs - and where many of its most famous names, including David Coulthard and Jenson Button, reside.

Designed for players of 15/1 standard (British ranking of 5.1) and below, the tournament costs €17 per event to enter, or €14 for under-18s. Last year, over 350 players participated, not only from Monaco and France but also countries as far afield as Australia and Russia. The awards ceremony and cocktails take place on 11 August.
To improve your serve, or just for a casual game why not go along to the Tennis Club Soleil in Monaco's neighbouring township of Beausoleil, where you'll receive a warm welcome from director Christian Collange and some of the club's 500 members. There are eight courts, four of them floodlit, which can be hired out by the hour.
Alternatively, you'll find three hard and two grass courts at the Tennis Club d'Èze, located north between Èze village and the Grand Corniche. Run by ex-Davis Cup player Michel Borfiga, the club has highly qualified teachers, and a regular company of English-speaking players who meet every Sunday from 11 to 1pm.
If you're closer to Nice, why not enjoy a game on the courts where Yannick Noah and Henri Leconte made their names? Nice Lawn Tennis Club is one of the most prestigious in France. As well as the 13 clay and 6 hard courts (among the best in the country) there's also a sauna, boutique and air-conditioned bridge

In a remarkable race, 2008 World Champion Lewis Hamilton took his place at the top of the podium, pipping current board leader Sebastian Vettel into second.
But the most astonishing drive came from Vettel''s Red Bull team-mate Mark Webber, who - in a gritty performance that is the mark of the man - clawed his way up to third from a disastrous 18th position in an incredible feat of tenacity and skill, overtaking McLaren's Jenson Button agonizingly close to the finish.
This now changes matters dramatically. Although Vettel still has a commanding lead, the Mercedes-McLaren team is making substantial inroads. With Hamilton and Button driving so well, there's certainly a chance for a reversal of last year's Monaco result, which saw Vettel and Webber take the top two places.

--Pre-race reportRace start positions are beginning to look strangely familiar these days. Yet again, reigning World Champion Sebastian Vettelhas taken pole for this year's Malaysian Grand Prix, with 2008 champion Lewis Hamilton hot on his wheels. After a disappointing debut to the season in his home race in Australia, Mark Webber has bounced back to third, leaving 2009's golden boy Jenson Buttonin fourth and Fernando Alonso in fifth.
Most telling, perhaps, is the dominance of Red Bull and McLaren in these top four, but it will be crucial for the British team to keep together if they are to have any chance of nipping in the bud what seems to be the unassailable roar of RBR. Early days, and many months' racing to come, but the psychological advantage is crucial for both drivers and constructors.
However, the key player in Sunday's race, the second of the 2011 season, may well turn out to be the rain. Weather conditions have always made their mark on Grand Prix motor racing, adding to the excitement as well as the danger. But this year there's genuine concern about the new Pirelli wet-weather tyres. Jenson Button has predicted mayhem in the race if the drivers are not careful:
"With the heat and humidity, and with it being a very tough circuit on tyres, then we are going to see a very different race to the last one in Melbourne... Chuck the weather into it and it's going to be absolute madness. It will still be good and we're all looking forward to it because you never really know what's going to happen."
Safety cars are one thing, but skill in wet weather is quite another, and drivers like Vettel seem to relish it. His first win for Red Bull in the rain-soaked 2009 Chinese Grand Prix was a case in point, taken from pole position, and he would surely have won the inundated Korean Grand Prix in 2010 - also from pole - had the engine not caused him to pull out nine laps from the finish. That race was eventually won by Fernando Alonso - perhaps the one to watch tomorrow.
And those who recall the 2008 Monaco Grand Prix will remember the current World Champion making his way from a penalized 19th to a magnificent fifth place - again in wet (though not quite so wet) conditions.

F1 Drivers' Championship heats up in Abu Dhabi

Hamilton lays down the law in first practice session - but has the surge come too late?
What: Abu Dhabi Grand PrixWhere: Yas MarinaWhen: Sunday 14 November 2010, 2pm CET
Lewis Hamilton was awarded the fastest lap time in the first practice session at Abu Dhabi's Yas Marina circuit on Friday, paving the way for a serious challenge in Sunday's Formula 1 Grand Prix. Though the odds are stacked against the 2008 World Champion, the fact is that he clinched that title by just one point from Felipe Massa at the latter's home track in Brazil - the same margin Hamilton now needs over current board leader, Ferrari's Fernando Alonso.
Can he do it? There's no question of either his inspirational driving, or his sheer stamina. But two factors militate against him: despite his position, he has endured a string of poor results this season - some due to technical difficulties, some to errors of judgment - which he was hoping to turn around in last week's Brazilian GP. It didn't happen. Although Hamilton ended fourth, it was by a massive gap of 14 seconds, a long distance by any standards.
Secondly, Hamilton and his team-mate, the current World Champion Jenson Button, are pitted against two formidable opponents in the form of Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel, who have celebrated together on the podium no fewer than seven times this season, out of a total eighteen races, including the Monaco Grand Prix. Not only do Red Bull have two strong drivers, they have also delivered the best chance of victory, in cars that have simply outshone all others this year, winning the team the Constructors Championship outright at last week's race.
That is why the eyes of the world will be focused on Abu Dhabi this weekend: it's going to be one of the most thrilling races on record, with four contenders in an extremely heated competition for the ultimate prize. The new scoring system, awarding 25 points for a win rather than the old 10, was just one of several major changes implemented this year, in order to accommodate more teams. But a side-effect has been to produce huge swings at the top of the table, and 'no overall control', as they say in the world of politics. Put simply, there are four possible World Champions on Sunday, but only three are really in the running for the top title.
2nd place or better for Alonso (currently on 246 points) would clearly see him to his third championship win. Mark Webber (on 238) requires not only a win, but for Alonso to come 3rd. A win for Vettel (on 231) would see him World Champion only if Alonso came fifth or lower. For either of these drivers, it would be their first championship win. For Hamilton (currently on 222) to succeed, an extraordinarily unlikely scenario would have to take place: Webber 6th or below, Vettel 3rd or below, and Alonso failing to score at all.

1. Sebastian Vettel: Red Bull Racing-Renault

3. Mark Webber: Red Bull Racing-Renault23-year-old Sebastian Vettel achieved his dream in Abu Dhabi today, stealing the World Championship from favourite Fernando Alonso, and becoming the youngest driver in the history of the sport after Lewis Hamilton in 2008 to take the title. It was a day of huge celebration for Red Bull Racing, who last week won the Constructors' Championship.
Vettel came to the race with two hopes: to maintain pole position and to hope that Alonso would finish sufficiently low in the order to prevent a win. In the end the Spaniard's hopes dwindled as he drifted back into seventh place, but still with enough points to come second in the championship. Winner of the Monaco Grand Prix Mark Webber, who was also contending for the world title, finished in eight place.
The winner's podium was an extraordinary sight, with a tearful Vettel flanked on either side by the two previous World Champions in second and third places: Hamilton on his right, and outgoing champion Jenson Button on his left.

The race - which was the first of the season due to the cancellation of the Bahrain GP last month - was run in sunny conditions at the attractive lakeside Albert Park circuit. But despite high hopes, home boy Mark Webber was unable to match his pre-race hopes, ending fifth overall.
In the lead up to today's race, much attention has focused on the substantial redesign of the McLaren-Mercedes car. However on the day, despite a generally good drive, Lewis Hamilton only managed second, and is on record as saying that the car is only a 'stepping stone' towards a final Red Bull killer. Team-mate and 2009 Champion Jenson Button came in a comparatively lowly sixth following a drive-through penalty.
But this was a command performance from the young German 2010 World Champion, who continued the winning streak that saw him overtake Fernando Alonso in the F1 stakes in the final races of 2010 in Brazil and Abu Dhabi.
One other name to watch as the season unfolds: Vitaly Petrov - shouldering responsibility for Renault since the rallying accident to Robert Kubica which may well see him absent for the entire season - took the podium for the first time.
It will be interesting to see how the current rankings will have changed by the time of the Monaco Grand Prix on 26 to 29 May 2011Sebastian VettelStandings after first race of the season1. Sebastian Vettel 1:29:30.259

When: 12-13 March 2011
Contact: +377 93 30 63 63 or f.jouvin@ycm.org
Every Saturday morning, the Yacht Club de Monaco’s pontoons are
bustling with sailing enthusiasts ready to learn the rudiments of
sailing, or to do battle round the buoys with their sights set on
the Monaco Championship.
Although the championship is mainly for J24s, it is punctuated by other races, including this coming weekend's Coupe Lorenzi which is open to all HN-registered boats over 6 metres in length.
Now in its second year, the Coupe Lorenzi will take place on the 12th and 13th March 2011. The course covers the stretch of coast from Menton to Villefranche over a maximum distance of 15 nautical miles, and the final ranking will be calculated on a standard HN (National Handicap) rating.
It's an opportunity for owners of J24 and cruisers flying the flag of Monaco to come together to share their common passion. Although a convivial occasion, there's no questioning the competitive spirit of the weekend, where you can witness some of the finest sailing skills on the Riviera on display.

Web: http://www.rallye-monte-carlo.netWhat do fans of motor racing do once the Grand Prix is over? Answer, they head straight for Monte Carlo, the home of the classic car rally. A week after this year's official Rallye Automobile de Monte Carlo (which this year celebrates its centenary), car-lovers will be able to participate in the 14th annual historic rally for cars built between 1955 and the end of 1979.
Hopeful candidates must drive a model that took part in any of the 25th to 48th Monte-Carlo Rallies, divided into the following categories: vehicles built between 1955 and 1961, 1962 and 1965, 1966 and 1971, and 1972 and 1979. Each category is further divided into three classes according to engine capacity: up to 1300cc, 1301cc to 2000cc, and those over 2000cc.
For the 2011 competition, drivers set off from three cities, each of
which launches its own stage: Glasgow, Marrakech and Warsaw, with two intermediate starting points, Barcelona and Reims, for very old cars or those with small engine capacities.
The cars assemble in Monte Carlo, where they face
the classification stage between Monaco and Valence (about 500km)
and regularity trials on the historic track; and the whole event
culminates in an exclusive black-tie gala dinner.

Saab's Erik Carlsson and Pat Moss at the 1964 Monte Carlo RallyThe 2011 Monte Carlo Historic Rally will celebrate the centenary of its even more famous older sibling with a completely new itinerary for the concentration legs. The organizing committee of the Historic Rally has elected to honour the early days of the Monte Carlo Rally by replacing the usual start points with the three historic starting cities.
Michel Ferry, President of the Historic Vehicle Committee, explained: 'We have been working hard since February on the best way of celebrating 100 years of the Monte Carlo Rally. We wanted this year to stand out from previous years, and so decided to choose famous departure towns from our early history. We also wanted to cater for smaller-engined cars, which is why we added two intermediate start points.'
As last year, contestants will gather on 29 January in the Principality of Monaco, and then head off to Saint-Andre des Alpes (Alpes-de-Haute-Provence) for the start of the first Regularity Stage: Touet de l’Escarene – Col de Braus, Col de Castillon (Alpes-Maritimes), before returning to the Parc Fermé in Monaco.ProgrammeSunday 30th January

What: Primo Cup - Credit Suisse TrophyWhere: Port Hercule, MonacoWhen: 3-6 February, 10-13 February 2011
If you're in Monaco this weekend or next, come down to Port Hercule to see some of the finest yacht racing in the world
For the past 25 years, the international elite of monotype yachting have gathered in early February off the coast of Monaco for the Primo Cup-Credit Suisse Trophy, the event which signals the start of the European regatta season. Held under the patronage and presidency
of HSH Prince Albert II, is the first monotype racing event of the year and one of the most important winter events in the European
yachting world.

This year more than 250 individual boats are expected, divided into 12 monotype classes over the two weekends, with over 1000 participants, including the venerable Dragon class, which three years ago celebrated the eightieth anniversary of its first build in 1928.
Also appearing once more will be the multicoloured Longtze Premiers and the Melges 20, which was awarded Boat of the Year in 2009
Organized by the Yacht Club de Monaco, the 27th annual competition takes place on two successive weeks, from Thursday 3 to Sunday 6 February and from Thursday 10 to Sunday 13 February. Just as it has for the last 25 years, the Primo Cup gathers together the European yachting elite, with 1000 crew representing some fifteen individual nationalities.
The competition comprises twelve rounds in all over the two weekends, with a minimum of seven competitors per category. They are: 3-6 Feb: J/80, Dragon, Esse 850, Surprise, J/24, Melges 20
10-13 Feb: X35, Platu 25, Longtze, Farr 30, Melges 32, Smeralda 888
The first three crews in each series wil be awarded with clothing from the Slam Advanced Technology Sportswear line. A Hublot chronograph will go to the owner of the fastest participating yacht on each of two weekends. And an ingot of gold, estimated in November 2010 at €3250 will be donated by Credit Suisse (Monaco) during the traditional lottery.

2011 is the centenary of the Monte Carlo Rally. The world-famous road race was first run in 1911 under the patronage of Prince Albert I, great-grandfather of the present prince of Monaco, with the aim of attracting visitors to the Principality, as well as giving car manufacturers the opportunity of testing new technologies.
Financed by the Société des Bains de Mer, the first rally was organized (as it still is) by the Automobile Club of Monaco. The club’s founding president Alexandre Noghès - whose son Antony would later emulate his father by setting up the Monaco Grand Prix- had come up with the idea of a motor race run in the winter months. Given the region’s narrow mountain roads, cliffs with sheer drops of hundreds of feet, as well as snow and ice, this was to be a real test. But the format proved an enormous success – and the race has been run in January ever since.
In that historic first competition, 23 cars set off from eleven cities across Europe, and sixteen of them finished the course, with car dealer Henri Rougier taking the chequered flag in a 25-horsepower Turcat-Méry.Entrants from Riga in the 1912 Monte Carlo Rally
Although the race was also run in 1912, there was a gap in proceedings – partly owing to the war – until the mid-twenties. By then, the motor car was entering its golden age, and successive races in this period saw wins for manufacturers such as Ford and Renault, though one company, US-based Hotchkiss, took the lion’s share of the prizes.
The 1960s were the heyday of the Rally, witnessing the apotheosis of the Mini from simple runaround to a performance vehicle in its Mini Cooper incarnation. Controversy arose, however, when three Minis (including one driven by the reigning champion, ‘Flying Finn’ Timo Mäkinen) were disqualified on a technicality concerning the design of the headlights.
Recovering from the damage of what became known as the Monte Carlo Fiasco, the race gathered an appreciative new audience during the 70s and 80s, maintaining its international appeal with multiple starting points, including Glasgow until 1972. The centenary race in 2011 will see the Scottish city re-instated after an absence of nearly 40 years. For British fans in particular the memory of the late, great Colin McRae (born in nearby Lanark) will not be far away. Other starting cities will include Barcelona, Warsaw and Marrakesh.
As well as this notable addition to the prestigious event, the 2011 Rally will be remembered for a crucial change in the regulations – the waiving of the entry fee for the hundred competitors selected to take part. It's hopes that this move, especially designed to encourage amateur participants, will add a particular edge to the centenary race.

Monaco Optimist Team Racing
Following on from the success of the first competition, Monaco Yacht
Club will bring together an international line-up once again, in
collaboration with SLAM. Twelve yacht clubs from eight nations will
come from all over Europe to take part in this team competition, where
only the group result is taken into account. Team Racing is an original
concept with teams of four sailors aged from 12 to 15 years and
requires not only the mastery of one's own boat, but also perfect
knowledge of the rules of the race, in order to gain the upper hand over
the opponents. Some teams, following the example of the Royal Yacht
Club of Moscow and the Saint Petersburg Sea Yacht Club, will cover
several thousand kilometres and leave their frozen seas to confront the
best Europeans. Among the favourites is the Société Nautique de Genève
(Geneva Nautical Society), winners of the first race last year and
determined to retain their title, who will be lining up two teams on the
starting line.

One of the longest-running personal feuds in the history of the beautiful game was laid to rest in Milan last month, when Zinédine Zidane and Marco Materazzi agreed to put the past behind them concerning the infamous headbutting incident in the final of the 2006 World Cup. According to news reports, all is now sweetness and light between the two players, who agreed to bury the hatchet when they met at the AC Milan-Real Madrid fixture.
Now, if you're in Monaco in the second week of December, you'll be able to witness the former French captain in action once again - though in more peaceable circumstances. For anyone concerned about history repeating itself, don't worry - it promises to be a tamer affair altogether, not least because it's being played in the name of a very good cause, a charity to raise much-needed money for sick children.
As far as we know, Materazzi will not be there, but with the two players' new-found friendship, who knows what may happen?
In 2006 Pascal Olmeta, former goalkeeper for both Lyon and Marseille, set up a charity whose aim is to improve the physical, psychological and emotional wellbeing of sick children and their families. 'A Smile, a Hope for Life' provides grants to hospitals and other organizations to enhance the lives of children in a difficult situation, and to help them realize their dreams and ambitions.
The charity's most successful initiative during the last five years has been an annual Beach Soccer Show, supported by international football stars and other celebrities, designed to raise money for this extremely worthwhile association. This year is no exception: as well as Zidane, Eric Cantona, Marco Simone and Bernard Laporte will also be participating in the forthcoming match, which for 2010 is being sponsored by Monaco's Columbus Hotel.
The friendly match takes place on a specially-created sand arena in the Big Top of Fontvieille on 11 December.

The previous evening will see a special concert - in aid of 'A Smile, a Hope for Life' and Princess Stephanie's Fight Aids Trust - by R&B artiste Shy'm, and pop singer Christophe Maé, (World Music Awards 2008, best French artist; NRJ Music Awards 2009, best French song)

What: Auron Ski Resort
Where: Mercantour National Park
Web: http://www.auron.com
Contact: +33 4 93 23 02 66.
Following the recent snowfall and temperatures low enough to produce artificial snow, the ski resort of Auron is open continuously from Saturday 4 December, followed by the opening of the entire resort.
Situated on the doorstep of the Mercantour National Park at a height of 1600m, Auron offers a
great skiing experience in a protected environment only an hour and half
away from the Riviera. Over the last 70 years it has grown into a popular holiday destination, offering modernity and comfort
without sacrificing the intimacy and special feel of the historic village at the foot of its exhilarating slopes.

Skiers of all ages can enjoy great snow and sun in a family resort with over 135 km of pistes divided into four sectors: Las Donnas, Sauma Longue,
Demandols and Lieuson. Snow cannons are on hand to generate perfect conditions, while the beautiful slopes
800m above the station are divided into 42 pistes and an adrenalin-fuelled
snow park.
Facilities- 135 km of ski runs in four sectors - an hourly flow of 26,470 skiers!
- 42 ski runs: 9 black (2.94 km), 15 red (45.90 km), 16 blue (53.36 km), 2 green (32.8 km)
- 21 ski lifts: 3 cable cars, 9 chairlifts, 7 ski tows, 1 conveyor belt and 1 telerope
- 29 snow cannons - 143.50 hectares covered
- Snow park for snowboarders in three zones: beginners, intermediate and advanced
- Half pipe
Auron also offers a great choice of cultural activities. The historic village of St Etienne de Tinée with its painted chapels and traditional housing is directly linked to the ski area via the Pinatelle cable car. And for enthusiasts of the natural world,
the Mercantour itself is, of course, an important wildlife reserve.
The Tourist Office of Auron offers excellent ski packages starting
at €160 per person for a two nights stay (half board) and 3-day
pass for Auron ski paradise and its 21 ski lifts (not available on
Fridays and Saturdays, and during school holidays).

What: No Finish Line
Where: Port Hercule
When: 20-28 November, 24 hours a day
Entry fee: €12(€6) + €10 deposit for microchip
It's time to dust off your trainers for this year's No Finish Line, the Monaco-based fun-run that raises money for charity. And don't worry if you've only just completed the Nice Marathon - this is a much more relaxed affair - in fact if you want you can even walk the course around Port Hercule. But the important point is that for every kilometre completed, €1.10 will be donated to the Children & Future charity.
No Finish Line was devised by the Junior Chamber of Commerce of Monaco
in 1999. Its principle is simple - grab a T-shirt, and a microchip to
attach to your shoe, and then run, jog or walk as often and whenever you
want over the course of the eight days.
A record 5940 people took part in last year's No Finish Line, raising badly-needed funds for a number of worthy causes. Christine David
took victory for the women, covering 901 km in 8 days, while
Trond Sjavik broke the men's record with 922.4 km over 8 days. This year
an honorary award was made to Jeffrey Norris, who covered 449 km in 8
days, an astonishing achievement since Jeffrey is blind.
Records to beat!
Individual Men's 24h: 248.39km (Thomas Maguire 2009)
Individual Women's 24h: 222.201 km Monica Casiraghi 2007)
Individual Women's total: 901.7km (Christine David 2009)
Individual totals: 922.4km Trond Sjavik 2009)
Team total: 6932 km (Coco Team 2006)
As well as a donation to the Cardio-Thoracic
Center of Monaco for children with heart defects, this year's money
will once again go towards work in developing countries, including funding for a sterile operating theatre
at the Sheik Zayed hospital in Nouakchott in Mauritania; and support
for the House of Life project for young people affected by AIDS (in
conjunction with AIDS Fight Monaco, whose president is HSH Princess
Stephanie).
_
This year No Finish Line - which takes place under the patronage of Princess Stephanie - celebrates its 11th anniversary. In 1999, 700 participants covered 9000 km and raised €15,000. Last year the number of walkers, joggers and runners had increased sixfold, and the amount of money raised was an amazing €115,298 which went to help children in need around the world. To date, projects supported by the charity include:installation of computer equipment in the paediatric unit of the University Hospital Centre at L’Archet II in Nice for children who are hospitalised 'long-term'reinstatement of the rural life and craftsmanship centre in Guiberoua, Ivory Coastrenovation of the 'Virgen de Guadalupe' dispensary in Bale, Panamapurchase of state-of-the-art monitoring equipment for the neonatal unit of the University Hospital Centre at L’Archet II in Nicesaving young children with cardiac malformations by arranging for them to have operations at Monaco's Cardio-Thoracic Centre

Where: Yas Marina
When: Sunday 14 November 2010, 2pm CET
This weekend will see the final showdown in this year's F1 Grand Prix, with constructors' champions Red Bull leading the field and hoping to add a World Championship driver to their existing trophy. The Yas Marina, modelled on the Monaco Grand Prix track is one of the world's newest circuits and has already impressed drivers and constructors alike since its opening race last year. Results of Brazilian Grand Prix
1 Sebastian Vettel Red Bull-Renault 1:33:11.803 25
2 Mark Webber Red Bull-Renault +00:04.243 18
3 Fernando Alonso Ferrari +00:06.807 15
4 Lewis Hamilton McLaren-Mercedes +00:14.634 12
5 Jenson Button McLaren-Mercedes +00:15.593 10
A defining race saw Jenson Button fail in his attempt to secure a second successive world championship title, and Lewis Hamilton effectively out of the running - barring upsets at Abu Dhabi. Meanwhile Sebastian Vettel consolidated his position still further to ensure that this weekend's race will be a showdown between Vettel, his team-mate Mark Webber, and Ferrari's Fernando Alonso.
For Red Bull, the charge is over: with yet another one-two win, they took the constructors' championship with flying colours at Interlagos. Their Renault-engineered machines have been tweaked and perfected to the point of near-perfection: other designers could only stand and gawp at their run of success.
Lewis Hamilton, for whom Brazil was almost certainly the last roll of the dice in the 2010 championship, had come a creditable third in Friday's first practice session; but it was the dynamic duo of Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel - who earlier this year clocked up a double win for team Red Bull at the Monaco Grand Prix- who led the way on the historically challenging course in São Paulo.
In the second practice, the British driver dropped to fourth, with Fernando Alonso, winner of the Korean GP two weeks ago, separating him from the Red Bulls.
But it was rookie Nico Hülkenberg who qualified for pole position - the first of his F1 career - in conditions made considerably tougher by wet weather. The final run-off for the top ten places saw the Red Bull pair maintaining position in second and third, while reigning champion Jenson Button slid out of the running and will start eleventh on the grid.
In the race itself, Hulkenberg was soon pipped by Webber and Vettel, but maintained his position high in the order sufficiently long to be a stumbling block for Lewis Hamilton, who simply couldn't get past him. When he did, it was to come a disappointing fourth, behind championship challenger Alonso. It was a gloomy day for British racing.
On current form, either Webber or Vettel are well placed to lift this week's title for the first time, but no-one should discount veteran champions Alonso or Hamilton.

Dawn of the Korean Grand Prix

This weekend's race is the Grand Prix which will define the championship. Although the new points scoring system has delivered a wide gap between the fornt runners and the also-rans, the jostling for top position this season has been, if anything, more intense and exciting than ever. In the running for the championship are five familiar names: Alonso, Button, Hamilton, Webber (victor of the Monaco Grand Prix) and, since last week, the dark horse - or should that be bull? - Sebastian Vettel.
The Korean GP is being run on a completely new circuit. Barely complete, it was touch-and-go whether it would be approved in time by the F1 authorities; but now the green light has been given, the thrilling 5.6 km circuit appears ready to take its first big race.
Built on reclaimed marshland at Yeongam, the course has been planned by German designer Hermann Tilke. The visually arresting circuit is a combination of a regular race track, abutting at a sharp angle onto a temporary Formula 1 extension that runs alongside the
harbourside for the best views from hotels
and yachts - the part of the race, of course, that will look most familiar to fans of the Monaco Grand Prix!
For the drivers, it's going to be an all-new experience, with plenty of challenges, chief among them a number of very slow turns - opportunities for overtaking which may well favour the Red Bulls. The only question, apart from hastily completed grandstands which may not be filled this year, is whether the track will have had time to 'bed down'. Tilke has predicted that the slipperiness of the surface may lead to 'the most exciting race since the Canadian Grand Prix'.
All this will be red rag to the bull of the McLaren team, whose Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button will be looking to improve on their recent slippage down the table. We have only a few days to wait and see whether they can respond to the challenge. Until then, why not take a look at this fantastic virtual lap animation narrated by Mark Webber?

Web: http://www.monacorugby.comFor a sports club that combines competitive games with real life skills, Monaco Rugby's a clear winner!
Last season was a remarkable one for the children who attend the Monaco rugby school. Thanks to the standards set by high-level coaching and a team of dedicated instructors, the club responded well beyond expectation, with nearly a hundred happy players proud of their top-class results in a variety of different tournaments. For the third consecutive year the Firsts rose up the ranks to the point of an honourable promotion, and with the creation of a junior team for 17-year-olds, all the ingredients are there to affirm the qualities and ambitions of the rugby school.
The school is always keen to promote the values of the sport - not only the fighting spirit of the game, but also respect, enthusiasm and esprit de corps. No wonder more and more parents every year are looking to a sport which instils these key principles of life and education.
Besides training on Saturdays from 9:45 to 12:00, the club now enjoys new opportunities thanks to the availablity of new grounds to enhance their programme, including the stadium at Cap d'Ail for children aged 7 to 12, and the Devens stadium for those aged 13 to 15.
The club is more than happy for potential players to come along to a training session. "Take the test, become the best!" is their motto!

Aspiring world champions take to the Grand Prix Circuit

What: Monaco Kart Cup 2010When: 15-17 October 2010
Where: Monte Carlo
It’s every child’s dream to be able to race on the Monaco Grand Prix circuit, and for nearly eighty lucky competitors, this weekend will be the realization of that dream as they take to the driver’s seat for the fourteenth Monaco Kart Cup. All participants will be well aware that their heroes of Formula 1 all started out racing in events like this one.
Karting, which has been a popular sport for fifty years, is often described as a scaled-down version of full motor racing, but even a KF3 (junior-class) kart can still achieve a top speed of 85 miles an hour, and KF1 class vehicles 115mph. The light, compact build means that a vehicle can accelerate from 0-60 in 3 seconds, and the driver’s proximity to the ground means that they are every bit as engaged with the racing surface and the responsiveness of the vehicle as are professional formula drivers.
This particular event is designed for two classes, KF3, for junior drivers 12-15 years old, and KZ2 for drivers fifteen years and older, but the quality of care and preparation throughout this sporting weekend guarantees that the standard and quality will be as high as that for adult motor racing.
According to the Automobile Club of Monaco (who also organize the Grand Prix), the fact that the race is run on the lower part of the famous Formula One circuit is sure to attract young drivers and future world champions across all motorsport disciplines, and with better weather forecast, there should be a very high turnout of spectators the length of the 1068-metre circuit.
There will be non-qualifying practices on Friday, followed by endurance heats on Saturday and full racing on Sunday for the 34 drivers in each class to have made it through. Sunday’s timetable
2.10-2.30pm KF3 Pre-final (14 laps)
2.40-3.05pm KZ2 pre-final (19 laps)
3.40pm Parade of drivers
4.10-4.40pm KF3 Final (24 laps)
4.50-5.20pm KZ2 Final (28 laps)
followed by awards ceremony
If you’re in Monaco this weekend, you’ll hardly be able to escape the excitement; and by all accounts, the great popularity of this Monegasque event, which forms part of the CIK/FIA international race calendar, is set to grow.

What: 36th Japanese Grand Prix
When: 8am Sunday 10 October
Where: Suzuka F1 circuit, JapanYet again Japan mirrored Monaco, with a Grand Prix which saw Red Bull take the top two places - though this time in reverse order: a win at long last for an unchallenged Sebastian Vettel, and a second place for team-mate Mark Webber which accelerates him to the top of the drivers' leader-board with only three races remaining. It was a disappointing race for Britain and McLaren-Mercedes, with Hamilton coming in fifth following a pre-race penalty and Button - who briefly led at the half-way point - just missing the podium, in fourth.
Full details of the race are available at the official F1 website.

Japan and Monaco have much in common. This summer’s Kyoto-Tokyo exhibition reminded us of the rich and noble heritage of both countries. Yoshi, the Michelin-star winning Japanese restaurant, offers gourmet cuisine to match that of the best French chefs. The Japanese Garden, that oasis of meditation and calm on Avenue Princesse Grace, is adorned with cherry trees which were the gift of the Japanese Government.
And then of course there’s the distinctly unmeditative world of Formula 1. Although much younger than its Monaco counterpart, and taking place on the other side of the world and at the opposite end of the F1 calendar, the Japanese Grand Prix is, like the Monaco Grand Prix, one of the most thrilling of all motor races. Traditionally the penultimate meeting (though not this year) it’s the one which has been responsible for deciding more world championship titles than any other, and over the years it’s provided its many fans with some of the most tantalising showdowns in racing history.
It was on the favoured Suzuka circuit that the historic spat between McLaren’s Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost took place in 1989. With Prost unwilling to give ground, the two collided just seven laps from the end of the race, but Senna chose to re-enter the fray, and astonishingly went on to win. His later disqualification for cutting a chicane on re-entry would cost him his world title.
The alternative Fuji track - plagued by torrential downpours and even more torrential ticket losses - was the venue for the 2007 GP, which handed Britain’s Lewis Hamilton his first World Championship title when most of his serious competition (including Vettel, Webber and reigning World Champion Fernando Alonso) suffered bad collisions. What: Celebrity Lunch with Dean RichardsWhere: Cafe de Paris
When: Friday 8 October 2010
Web: http://www.azurproductions.com
Having played for Roanne for a year before turning professional, and later coaching both Grenoble and Toulouse, Dean Richards is no stranger to French rugby. So he will be making a welcome return to the Riviera when he appears as the latest guest of Monaco's Celebrity Lunch series at the Café de Paris.
Between 1989 and 1995 Richards was one of the top number eights in the world, winning 48 England caps, and a further six for the British Lions on their 1989 and 1993 tours. As captain of the Leicester Tigers for four seasons in the early 1990s, he won the league twice, the cup three times, and was voted Whitbread's Rugby World player of the year in 1990-1.
In 2004, after a highly successful six years coaching his old team, Richards left Leicester and after a brief spell of coaching in France returned to the UK as Director of Rugby for Harlequins, who had recently been relegated from the Premiership. In a season when they lost only one league game, Richards led them triumphantly back to the Premiership at the first attempt.
Although his reputation has undoubtedly been clouded by the recent 'bloodgate' incident which forced him to resign his position, there's no question that Dean Richards's notable experience as a top-flight player and coach gives him a unique vantage point from which to survey the history and current state of the game on both sides of the channel. Programme
12.00pm: Welcome cocktails and canapes
12.30pm: Three-course lunch, including wine
2.00pm: Celebrity Speaker
3.00pm: Speeches and paid bar
Dress code: Business/lounge suit
A range of tickets is available, from individuals to small parties, or branded executive tables for ten guests. If you love the game and are living here or visiting Monaco, tickets for lunch starting at €120 are available from Azur Productions at their website above.

Apart from poker, it’s arguable that Golf is the sport which made the Riviera famous. Royalty and nobility, politicians and presidents, professionals and occasional putters have all come to the Cote d’Azur especially to play the game of kings.
Now, for the first time, the Riviera Times is hosting a golf tournament, with a number of impressive prizes, to be played on Saturday 2 October at the Saint Donat Golf Club. Designed by Robert Trent Jones, this 6000m, 18-hole par 71 course is well known for its gracious setting in a beautiful wooded landscape just south of Grasse.
The Riviera Times Golf Cup is open to everyone, whether expert or amateur. Starting at 9am with breakfast on the clubhouse terrace, participating players will have the opportunity for a practice session on the driving range before the tournament begins in earnest at 10.45.
The competition itself is based on a modified Texas Scramble format with teams of two (instead of the usual four) playing against each other: simply put, both members of the team tee off at the same hole, and the better shot is the one that continues to be played.
A buffet and well-earned refreshments starts at around 3.15pm on the terrace with prizegiving scheduled for 5pm. Stunning Prizes
The major prizes for the first Riviera Times Golf Cup include:
• a weekend for two in the stunning five-star Turnberry Resort in Scotland
• a chance to take part in the Club Yachting Life Regatta
(offered by Cup sponsor Dahm International)
• a night for two in the Boutique Hotel JK Place in Florence.
The all-in cost of €149 per person – payable at the time of booking - includes green fees, access to the driving range, breakfast, buffet and all drinks, along with a top-quality polo shirt embroidered with the Riviera Times Golf Cup logo.

As always with events organized by the popular newspaper, the day is not just about golf: it’s also an opportunity to make new contacts, get together with friends, extend your network and most importantly have a great day in the heart of Provence.

What: TriStar 111 triathlon
Where:Larvotto Beach (start)When:5 September 2010
Start: 8amEntry: Tristar 111 website
RESULTSOlivier Marceau (SUI) won the race with Mikel Elgezabal (ESP) in 2nd place and Regis Maniora (LUX) 3rd. Christel Robin (FRA) was the first female athlete to cross the finish line. The best relay team was Livestrong Team No. 2 with Gregory Mallet (swimming), Geoffroy Lequatre (cycling) and Marcel Zamora (running). It used to be called Iron Man 70.3, which sounded like a heavy rock radio station. Now it's called TriStar 111, which sounds more like a make of aircraft. But whatever its name, the Monaco triathlon continues to be hugely popular, and this year attracted over 650 athletes from all over the world.
The day started at 8am with the 1km swimming element to get things off to a flying start at Larvotto Beach. Once out of the water, athletes entered the transition area to ready themselves for the challenging and mountainous 100km cycling course, which took riders out of Monaco towards Roquebrune and up the steep mountains of the hinterland, with its breathtaking views and picturesque villages. On their arrival back in Monte Carlo, it was on with the running shoes for the final 10km running section, which took place on the circuit of the Monaco Grand Prix, where the notorious hairpin bends which are the slowest for cars became the fastest for runners!
Four of the estimated 660 runners and 40 relay teams certainly knew their way around the track, since they'd driven it many times already: reigning World
Champion Jenson Button competed in the race as well
as Bruno Senna (Ayrton Senna’s nephew) and Lucas di Grassi. Former Formula 1 pilot and winner of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, Austria's Alexander
Wurz also participated in the triathlon.
For 2010, the competition was somewhat simplified, with the swimming
and running elements significantly reduced in length, and the cycling
increased, to bring the total distance covered to 111 kilometres, two kilometres less than the previous Iron Man competitions. Swimming: 1km

Cycling: 100km

Running: 10km

What: UEFA Super Cup 2010
Awards: Grimaldi Forum (Thursday 26 August 5.45pm)
Match: Stade Louis II (Friday 27 August 8.45pm)
The Super Cup match between UEFA Champions Inter Milan and UEFA Europa League winners Atlético de Madrid took place at the Stade Louis II on Friday 27 August.

Two of the biggest names in European soccer went head to head in the UEFA Super Cup at AS Monaco's home ground in Fontvieille. Extraordinarily, despite having played between them upwards of 500 European games, the two teams had never met in an official fixture, so the match had a particular buzz this year.
Moreover, both sides' coaches were once in charge of the same team, Valencia CF, so the personal stakes will be high too. 50-year old Rafael Benítez, who has just finished his six-year reign as manager of Liverpool, was looking to repeat his 2005 Super Cup in which Liverpool defeated CSKA Moscow; while for fellow countryman Quique Sánchez Flores, the 45-year-old Atletico coach, this was his first such fixture.
After a goalless first half, in the end, it was the Spanish side's day, with goals from ex-Arsenal player Jose Antonio Reyes and, in the dying minutes, Sergio Aguero.

On the preceding day at the Grimaldi Forum, UEFA officials presented the Club Footballer of the Year awards (details to follow)

When 22 July 2010 7-10pmUpdate:23 July
Last night at the Open Air Cinema at 9.30 they were showing 'The Clash of the Titans'. But if you wanted to see the real giants fighting it out, you could, just a few hundred yards away in the Stade Louis II. That's the beauty of Monaco: if you change your mind, it's never far to walk to the next venue in town!
At yesterday's packed event, 16000 spectators witnessed seven of the
best athletics performances of the season, with stunning perfromances in
the men's 400m and 1500m, and the women's 800m and 3000m. Tyson Gay
won the 200m men's, and although personally disappointed with the result, it was an Event record for Herculis Monaco, and a season best for Gay, of 19.72 seconds. All results are available from www.herculis.com
The 24th Herculis International Athletics competition is, as always, the curtainraiser for the European Championships, and the African Championships, which are to be held in Nairobi. 14 cities around the world from the United States to Asia, Europe and the Middle East host this major sporting series throughout the year, and Monaco often produces one of the most memorable competitions, with three world records clocked up in this stadium over recent years.
There are fifteen events in all (seven for men and eight for women) including track and hurdle events on the completely resurfaced circuit, and the full range of field events, including javelin, shot put, high jump, long jump, triple jump and pole vault. The Stade Louis II once again plays host to this important competition, which is always seen as a key indicator for the bigger championships to come. Last year Lashinda Demus put in a stunning performance to achieve her personal best in the 400m hurdles, and more like this was expected this year.
Among the list of top athletes, Monaco welcomed four new World Champions: Mbulaeni Mulaudzi (800m), Yusuf Saad Kamel (1500m), Kerron Clement (400 hurdles) and Dwight Phillips (long jump). Other great names included the celebrated 200m runner Tyson Gay, the poster-boy of the event, who continues to thrill the world of sprinting despite his hamstring injury two years ago.
In his attempt to better his previous season's best time of 19.76 seconds, Gay was due to have clashed with fellow American sprinter Walter Dix, but yesterday it was announced that Dix had puilled out of the much-anticipated meeting. Gay was philosophical: 'I want to beat the best and right now Dix is on top in the 200m. It would’ve been more interesting with him in the race but it doesn’t really change anything. I’m still going to try and race in the same way.'

End of the road for the Monaco Grand Prix?

Ecclestone signals change of direction for World Motor Racing in press comments
Just over halfway through this year's racing season, Bernie Ecclestone, president and CEO of Formula One Management, has been widely reported in the media today as saying that the future of the Monaco Grand Prix is in doubt.
Ecclestone's comments have come in the wake of discussions to expand the current tranche of F1 circuits to include India, Texas and Russia. With a cap of 20 races per year - any more would cause strain to the drivers and place huge demands on travel expenses - two or more races will have to be scrapped, and Monaco is in the firing line because, in Ecclestone's words 'they don't pay enough'.
His comments - which are likely to anger those fans who look to the Principality as the very hub of the sport - were not confined to Monaco, but the continent in general. 'The Europeans are going to have to pay more money,' he says, 'or we will have to go somewhere else'.
First run in 1929, the Monaco Grand Prix is one of the most prestigious races anywhere in the world, and the only one which is still run on a circuit based entirely on city streets rather than on a purpose-built track. This unique selling point draws the world's attention every year, and raises the excitement levels of press and punters far beyond any other race in the calendar.
Whatever the cost, in terms of sheer publicity Monaco is the epicentre of world motor racing, as well as its historic heart, and to see it stop beating as the result of any such decision would be - to say the least - a tragedy.
The poster for the 1965 race won by Graham Hill, considered by many to be the greatest race ever run on the Monte Carlo course. Hill was known as 'Mr Monaco' following his five victories on the circuit.
The Monaco Grand Prix's future looks uncertain following recent remarks by Bernie Ecclestone.

Tilte: MONACO Grand Prix Historique 2010Author: Philippe BiossatCovers: paperback
Price: €60 Contact:phbios@gmail.comCityOut: Philippe, can you tell us a little about your photographic career?Philippe Biossat: Sure; I worked for a long time in finance at the Paris Bourse, negotiating rates on the floor of the stock exchange; but when I met my wife we settled on the Riviera and I returned to my first loves: photography and painting. It was my father who first taught me that passion. Later I went to photography school at EFET to learn the basics and technique, but that didn’t suit me - it was too technical and I’m more interested in creation and discovery. Instead I trained by looking at the work of the great photographers. I’m particularly attracted to the work of Brazilian photographer Sebastio Salgado. He’s a great reporter; he can capture the moment with a real intensity. CO: How did you get the idea for your book?PB: Initially, it wasn’t planned at all. I just wanted to take great pictures as a souvenir to share with my friends. Then, once I developed the photos I realized that I had a huge number so I thought of making up a collection. The concept went down well with friends and also with the Automobile Club de Monaco, who liked the concept.
CO: Why the Historic Grand Prix of Monaco? PB: I’m a great fan and collector of both cars and photographs, so this was a way of uniting my two passions. I focused on the first five series of cars, deliberately omitting the last two series (F1 and GT) because I wanted to focus on the former. I was lucky enough to have access to the paddock and the circuit, so I could vary the shots, which made the project more interesting - it was good to be able to practise my art with such freedom. One car that I found really striking was the Maserati V8RI No. 20 from 1936 – it’s really something special and unique.
CO: What makes this book different from all the others?
PB: Well, the book was laid out and printed on a publish-on-demand website, which allowed me to keep control of the project from start to finish. It also makes it easier to update new editions with new photos. However much I searched through the bookstores to find books that combined my twin passions, there was nothing there. My book is not a car book as such, but rather a way of discovering and coming to love cars by highlighting their beauty. When I look at a car, I don’t see just a collection of technical statistics but rather the hand of the man who shaped it: for me it is a unique sculpture. That's why I produced the book. Incidentally, hope the glamour of it all will appeal to women, too! CO: So, where can I buy my own copy?PB: All books are printed to order with a choice of high quality photo paper. To order your own copy, simply send an email to phbios@gmail.com and you will receive the book within ten days.

World Championship Backgammon

Fairmont Hotel to host week-long backgammon gala in Monte Carlo
What: World Backgammon Championships
Where: Fairmont Hotel
When: 11-18 July
Dress code: Formal
Entry Fee: see below
Website: http://www.backgammon-tournaments.com
In the year 1254, Louis IX of France (whose exemplary Christian life ultimately made him a saint) issued a decree banning his courtiers from playing the devilish ‘jeu de tables’, or backgammon. Presumably, this law did not extend as far as Monaco, which was at the time an Italian colony.
Just as well, really, because this year’s World Backgammon Championship is about to begin at the Fairmont Hotel in Monte Carlo. The World Championship, which moved here from Las Vegas in 1979, attracts agenuinely international crowd, with the last five champions coming from the USA, the Netherlands, Argentina, Denmark and most recently Japan.

The week-long competition is open to all but entry fees are not for the faint-hearted, ranging from €200 for beginners to €1000 for the champions’ game, plus a separate registration fee of €240 (which includes a Gala Dinner and Prizegiving Cocktail Party). Outside the main competition there are an additional six jackpot and team championship events.
Although some dismiss backgammon as a game of pure chance, in fact there is real strategic skill displayed at the highest levels, and there's no question that this year's event will ignite serious, passionate and thrilling engagements at the board. To find out more about how to play this fascinating game, see this page for the basics of backgammon.ProgrammeSunday 11 July
