Accademia Fine Art Auction

Where: Hôtel de Paris
When: Fri 27 to Sat 28 July 10am to 8pm (public view)
Auction: Sunday 29 July at 5.30pm
Web: http://www.accademiafineart.com
The latest sale from Monaco's Accademia auction house includes treasures from the Sultan of Brunei, made by the British jewellers Asprey, a Monaco private art collection made under the guidance of Professor Anton Luigi Laura, and a special focus on Russian art with a fine sketchbook by Natalia Goncharova containing 21 watercolours of ballet costumes.
The Brunei collection is utterly outstanding, with a number of exquisite combinations of crystal, gold, enamel and abundant settings of diamonds, rubies, emeralds and sapphires. Typical is the unique butterfly box pictured below, which is expected to fetch between €140,000 and €180,000 at auction.
From the same collection comes a functioning terrestrial globe, its continents fashioned from 18ct gold and each capital from a single ruby. A chronometrical mechanism indicates the time as the clockwork globe sweeps around.
Of particular interest to buyers in both Monaco and Moscow is the 21-leaf sketchbook of Natalia Goncharova. The great-niece of Pushkin and a leading member of the Futurist movement, Goncharova collaborated with Diaghilev, Stravinsky and others on the work of the Ballets Russes - the celebrated dance company with which Monaco is most intimately associated, and whose centenary was celebrated here just two years ago.
The book is a catalogue of the costumes for the ballet 'On the Dnieper' (''На Днепре'), scored in 1930 by Prokoviev for a performance by the Ballets Russes a year after the death of Diaghilev. The sketchbook, personally inscribed to Countess Piella Giustiniani Bandini, represents a unique view into the style and history of an extraordinary artistic collaboration, and is being auctioned with an estimate between €180,000 and €220,000.
In addition, the 265-lot auction includes a wealth of chinoiserie, Meissenware, and a number of excellent paintings both ancient and modern. Viacheslav Plotnikov's view of the Hotel de Paris from 1962 (below) is one of several pieces likely to attract Monaco buyers, in the price range of €2,500 to €3,500:
The pieces are being shown in the Salle Beaumarchais in the Hotel de Paris from 27 to 28 July, with the auction itself at 5.30pm on Sunday 29 July.

The exceptional climate and natural geography of Monaco, on its rocky headland between the Mediterranean and the mountains, makes it the perfect venue for nature lovers and gardeners alike. The Monaco Garden Club, a non-profit association, was created in 1968 by Princess Grace. A devotee of the natural world, and of flowers in particular, it was her wish to promote public appreciation of the exceptional work done by gardeners and flower arrangers all over the world.
For one weekend each year the terraces behind the Monte Carlo Casino burst into bloom with an exceptional display of flowering plants, as professional gardeners and designers gather to showcase their work. Dedicated to the art of Mediterranean horticulture, this ephemeral garden, designed by renowned landscape architect Jean Mus, has gained a wide reputation for its beautiful and diverse exhibits.
The list is impressive: flowering and aromatic plants, olive and citrus trees, vegetables, tropical orchids, rose bushes, box trees, ferns and bamboos abound; and for the thousands of visitors to this exceptional parade, the wonderful aroma of jasmine and lavender.
This year, two additional events take place under the aegis of the festival: the 45th International Flower Arranging Competition and the 1st Monaco International Rose Competition, sponsored by Swiss watchmaker Piaget. Eighteen professional rose-growers from six countries (Germany, France, Italy, Japan, Switzerland, and the USA) will be participating in the latter competition, and the variety that gains most points in any category will be honoured with the prestigious 'Golden Rose of Monaco', a piece of jewellery specially created by the sponsors.
Twinned with 'Rêveries sur les Jardins', these internationally-renowned competitions attract many floral artists, and over 2000 individual floral arrangements will be on show. Accessories on display and sale include panama hats, stone fountains,
gazebos, candelabra, pottery lamps and bathroom and hammam products. There is also an extensive bookshop.Programmefor the 45th Flower Arranging competitionSaturday 5 May, 5pm - 8pm

Where: Hôtel Métropole Monte-Carlo
When: 1 February to 22 March 2012
At any time between 1 February and 22 March, why not treat your Valentine to a special stay at the Hôtel Métropole Monte-Carlo,
named 'Best Hotel in the World 2010'? At €509 per night for two persons, it's a chance to sample the civilized ambiance of one of the world's most romantic locations, as well as dining at the award-winning RestaurantJoël Robuchon. Plus, there's the chance to make the occasion really thrilling with a private
helicopter ride over the Principality and French Riviera, for a
supplementary charge.
During this extended Valentine's period, guests will be welcomed with champagne and flowers inspired by the 'I Kiss Metropole' theme, and everywhere you turn, the hotel will be spectacularly decked out with spectacular vistas of passion-red roses, inspired by Kenzo's 'Field of Poppies'. Head Barman Eddy Montana will be mixing liqueur-based Hot Kisses cocktails at the bar - or for those who prefer, a vibrant non-alcoholic Lulu 'mocktail'.
In the hotel's Salon des Princes, avant-garde jewellery designer Solange Azagury-Partridge will be displaying
'Hot Lips', her world-famous collection of opaque enamelled
rings, each in the shape of a pair of parted lips. The
eight-piece range of jewellery will be available for purchase as part of
the 'I Kiss Métropole' theme. The Hôtel Métropole Monte-Carlo is also teaming up with accessories designer Lulu Guinness, whose glamorous 'retro' collection of clutches - in the shape of pouting lips, of course - will be on show
in the lobby to clients of the hotel and its restaurants
'I Kiss Metropole' will also present an exclusive work by the American
Scott Campbell, who has recently worked on a men's
collection for Louis Vuitton. He lives in New York, where he is also well-known for his laser-decorated one-dollar bills. He has used this
same technique to produce a work especially for the Hôtel Métropole
Monte-Carlo's special theme - it represents a mouth set on the
background of an American banknote.Valentine's Day special at Joel Robuchon
During the 'I Kiss Metropole' Season, guests can dine at any time at the signature restaurant of one of the world's most decorated chefs. But those staying over Valentine's Day itself can expect an even more exhilarating gastronomic experience. For a €160 supplement per person, lucky couples will be treated to the seven-course 'Romance' menu. To crown the evening, a Flaming Heart dessert will be served, and one - even luckier - girl will be the recipient of one of Solange’s beautiful Hot Lip rings to take home as a memento of a very special day.

Where: Galerie Carré Doré
When: Tue-Sat, 6 December 2011 to 16 January 2012
Contact Tel: +377 97 77 12 86One of Monaco's leading contemporary art galleries is showing the best of its year's work until 16 January.
If you're looking for that extra special present for Christmas, there's no better place to start looking than the Galerie Carré Doré, at 5 Rue Princesse Caroline. Concentrating largely on contemporary painting and sculpture, the gallery has built up a strong portfolio of artists who engage in the creation of beautiful, sensory pieces. A good example is Konstantin Khudyakov, whose 'multi-touch' creations are at the cutting edge of interactive digital art.
Another is Filippo Avalle, an artist who is also an instructor at the NABA School of design in Milan. Born in Geneva in 1947 and educated at Turin's Accademia Albertina, since the 1970s he has been creating innovative luminous sculptures made from methacrylate, fibre optics, and white LED.
Taking his cue from the poet Ezra Pound, whose artistic output included a single work 'The Cantos', produced over the course of a lifetime, Avalle too has come to view his entire artistic output - whether in painting, sculpture,
architecture or lighting design - as the progressive creation of a
single, lifetime's work entitled 'Opera Unica'.
Several pieces are on show at the Gallery, including the geometrically intriguing 'Lingua di Donna', and works of an astonishing iridescent beauty such as 'L'Uomo Riccio nel Cerchio Oceanico' (The Rich Man in Ocean's Orbit). Lingua di Donna, by Filippo Avalle
Also exhibiting at the Carré Doré will be a slection of artists whose work has appeared at the gallery in the preceding year, including Konstantin Khudyakov, Amanda Besl, Timofei Smirnov, Gianni Molaro, Ivan Plusch, Olga Bulgakova, Irina Starzhenetskaya, Masami Takemoto, Jin Bo, Carl Warner, Christopher Boffoli, Fareen Butt, Benoit Montet, Giovanni Casellato and Svetlana RezanovaSintesi by Filippo Avalle
Read more...

People who make Monaco: Elizabeth Wessel

International fashion designer Elizabeth Wessel on her days in Paris and Monaco
Elizabeth Wessel is an international fashion designer whose artistic endeavours also extend to painting and graphic art. Of Danish and Chilean origin, she grew up in Paris and from an early age was indelibly impressed by the world of design. In 1972 she started the Elizabeth Wessel label and opened her boutique in Paris and the following year won first prize of the Gala de la Presse for her 74 autumn winter collection.
"My parents enjoyed moving between their different homes and for a long time we had a flat in Paris. Each season I went with my mother to see the catwalk shows in the salons of her favourite Haute Couture houses. When I became a teenager, I knew imediately that I wanted to become a fashion-designer." She went on to train at the Ecole de la Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture in Paris, and moved on to design forTorrente. What was that experience like for her?
"I always loved my life in Paris: the atmosphere was so light and playful. My favourite occupation as a schoolgirl was to go to the Haute Couture houses on Saturdays and try on different pieces of their collections - it made me dream. Then later when I finally started working as a fashion designer, I had to use 'l'entrée des fournisseurs', which I thought was hilarious!"
In 1980, Elizabeth established herself in Monaco, where people have always enjoyed the allure of high fashion. "Monte-Carlo used to be a very chic summer resort in those days," recalls Elizabeth. "Now it has become a city, and of course the dress-code has changed accordingly."
But it has also provided her with the chance to exhibit at least twice a year from her new wardrobes, including her beautifully understated spring/summer collection, which is already winning major plaudits. "La Mer du Nord was created in memory of my childhood summers on the Danish coast, the breeze from the sea, the nordic light - it's a little story of a piece of my life," she explains.
Although her reputation is as a designer of clothes, Elizabeth also has also developed her career as a painter cartoonist and travel writer, and is currently showing her work at the'Arternative Light' exhibition in Fontvieille and Cap d'Ail. "I'm so thrilled to have been invited to exhibit cartoons from my travel book - so much fun. I never thought that I would show them publicly, but life is full of surprises!"
The exhibit is sponsored by ARCOL - a charity which aims to help children in need through art. Was there any other charitable area she thought requied our attention? "Of course we should all think of helping those who are less fortunate than ourselves. We try to protect the very young and give them a better future but unfortunately very little is done for elderly abandoned people - it's a difficult subject, but one that requires real thought."

A recent survey suggested that many visitors to Monaco associate the Principality only with the Grand Prix, the Yacht Show... and a certain Wedding. But the cultural calendar is equally rich, nowhere more so than the country's wealth of fine art galleries. Throughout the year, these establishments, many of which enjoy a worldwide reputation, host individual sales and exhibitions of new and established artists. And now some of the best known names in the business are joining forces for a special three-day event.
Point Art Monaco is a ongoing project which has brought together eight major galleries to work together to promote the arts in the Principality. Among their achievements have been major artistic events such as shared private viewings in June and for Monaco's National Day in November. These events are an opportunity for art lovers to visit all Point Art Monaco's galleries on the same evening, and have become essential cultural and social occasions for art lovers around the world. Now the same team has dreamt up the Point Art MonacoSalon, a new initiative which aims to fill the gap vacated by the Monaco Biennale and the Monte Carlo Fine Art and
Antiques Fair. Together the galleries are offering a chance for art lovers from all over the world to attend a major opening in the communal setting of the Sporting d'Hiver right at the heart of Monte Carlo in Casino Square.
Celebrated set designer Pier Luigi Pizzi has been commissioned to
transform the Sporting d'Hiver into a true Winter
Garden, a fitting backdrop for this, one of the most elegant - and certainly one of the largest - vernissages the principality will have witnessed in many years.View of Venice by Guardi / Gallery Grippaldi

An allegorical statue in Carrara marble, 'Innocence' (Lot 101) by Florentine artist Luigi Bienaime - who made his name working for Tsar Nicholas I - is one of the most highly-valued items, expected to fetch between €250,000 and €265,000; while a Madonna and Child (Lot 91) painted by the celebrated Bernardo Strozzi in the early 1600s will most likely realise its top price of €300,000.

Fashion Art at the Carré Doré

Gianni Molaro opens his stunning new exhibition with a World Music Day tribute to Madonna
What: Fashion Art
Where: Galerie Carré Doré
When: 22 June (vernissage) to 9 July 2011Gianni Molaro was born in San Giuseppe Vesuviano, Italy, in 1966. At the age of 20 he made his debut in the world of high fashion, finding his inspiration in sources as diverse as the 17th and 18th century Italian Grand Masters and the surrealism of Salvador Dali.
The artist's 'fashion sculptures', based on clothing and fabrics, are famous for their fusion of the world of high art and haute couture. Amongst his innovations have been a number of memorable performance pieces, which have taken place all over the world: at the ARCO Contemporary Art Fair in Madrid, at Pablo Picasso's house in Paris, and at the MIART International Modern & Contemporary Art Fair in Milan, as well as in Naples, Jinan (China), and Valparaiso (Chile).
Molaro has a wide following among well-known collectors, especially women: Sofia Loren, Ilona Staller (La Cicciolina), Amanda Lear and Amy Stuart are among his many admirers, and he has produced several art works dedicated to Madonna, which will form the centrepiece of the vernissage to celebrate World Music Day. Another big fan is Baroness Cecile de Massy, under whose kind patronage this exhibition is taking place at the Galerie Carré Doré.
On this occasion, Molaro has partnered with jewellery designer Martina Wagner of Monte-Carlo Diamonds, whose exquisite work will also be on display.

If you're thinking of buying a car, you'll know that it always pays to look at the second-hand market, where great bargains are often to be found even among top-quality makes and models. Even so, it can take a good deal of research and comparison before you're happy with your choice.
That's why ten of Monaco's top dealers have come together to show off their range of prestige used motors under a single roof at the first ever Monaco Motortrade show in December. Specializing in the most prestigious names in the automotive market, from Aston Martin to Ferrari and Lamborghini, the show is the result of a meeting of minds by members of the Chambre Syndicale de l'Automobile Monaco.
Their decision to join forces at this new event will allow
customers in Monaco and the Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur region a
great opportunity to see a range of used vehicles, all in superb condition and fully-warranted, and make their selection much more quickly and easily than might normally be the case.
Monaco Motortrade - another reason to visit the stunning Grimaldi Forum
