room at the Fairmont Hotel
Imagine a hotel in which every moment is characterized by comfort, warmth, technology, professionalism and enthusiasm.
With 602 rooms, suites and residences, two restaurants and bars, a pool situated serenely between sky and sea, the Willow Stream Spa and Fitness Centre, a hair salon, shopping arcade, casino, and 18 conference and meeting rooms ... guests at the Fairmont want for nothing.
Anchored like a luxury liner near the Monte Carlo Casino, the Fairmont Monte Carlo offers a prime location overlooking the sparkling Mediterranean. An exceptional vessel moored at the heart of one of the most exclusive destinations in the world, the Fairmont Monte Carlo is a lavish retreat - and the perfect place from which to explore all the delights the Côte d’Azur has to offer.
Built on the site of the historic Tir au Pigeon and the old Monaco railway station, right on the famous Fairmont Hotel Hairpin bend of the Monaco Grand Prix circuit, the hotel was officially opened in 1975 byPrincess Grace. Now re-imagined in the style of a luxury Mediterranean cruise, its interior design shows off the most beautiful views over the sea, while the new décor highlights nautical themes in the rooms, in the atmosphere of the bar, and in the flavours of the restaurants.
The pièce de résistance, the Willow Stream Spa, Fitness Centre & Pool, is inspired by light, colour and the magic of the sea, and reflects the vibrant energy of the Riviera Coast. Another noticeable feature of the hotel is its eco-friendly approach, which confirms the commitment of Fairmont to sustainable development and environmental protection.
In 2009, the Fairmont Monte Carlo was awarded the Silver Award for Best Overseas Conference Hotel by the Conference & Incentive Travel magazine. But this was only the beginning of the hotel's recent success story.
2010 Awards for one of the World's Top Hotels

Thanks to its readers’ votes, Condé Nast Traveller magazine - published by the owners of Vogue and GQ - saw the Fairmont Monte Carlo listed in the Top 100 Southern European Hotels. Then, following a review of 3,600 nominees and over 183,000 votes, the World Travel Awards 2009 recognized the Fairmont as one of Europe's leading Casino Hotels, an award voted for by travel agents across the world.
More recently, the hotel has scooped three other prizes; in Expedia’s ranking, the Fairmont Monte Carlo appears amongst the Best hotels in the World while TripAdvisor awarded the hotel 'Best Hotel in the Best Destination of the World'. Finally, the Fairmont Monte Carlo was awarded the gold medal for 'Best Hotel outside Great Britain' by the renowned English magazine Meeting & Incentive Travel.

a room at the Columbus Hotel
For many years owned by David Coulthard, the champion racing driver, the Columbus Hotel in the district of Fontvieille is one of Monaco’s best-known destinations for leisure and business alike.
And its reputation is set to grow under its new owners, London and Regional, world leaders in the field of hospitality with a vast portfolio of luxury hotels including London’s three Hiltons and Monaco’s largest hotel, the Fairmont.
Columbus for Travel and Business

The Columbus itself is adjacent to the peaceful Princess Grace rose garden and the green space of Fontvieille Park, and a step away from the smaller of Monaco’s two harbours, nestled at the foot of the famous Rocher and the Prince’s Palace.
For business it’s particularly well-suited: only two minutes’ walk from the Heliport, you can get from Nice airport to the comfort of your room in minutes.
Rooms are light, spacious and comfortable, beautifully appointed with a contemporary look and feel by award-winning interior designer Amanda Ross.
Columbus for Food and Drink
The hotel’s Brasserie is justly considered one of Monaco’s best, Head chef Laurent Sturbois, who has in the past prepared private dinners for Prince Charles, captures the intense flavours of classic French, Provençal and Italian cuisine and combines them with exotic Asian infuences to create an inspiring menu.
Prices are well within the typical Monaco budget, and the ambiance is perfect, with a pleasant sunny terrace which is great for cocktails or a light lunch.
For a romantic touch, try the bespoke 'Grace' cocktail, an elegant blend of champagne and rose liqueur.
A change from the bustle of the Casino and Monte Carlo, the Columbus provides in its 180 rooms a peaceful and less expensive alternative to the big names of the centre of town.More

Wondering where to stay in Monaco?Book a
room at the Monte Carlo Beach
'Someone said that life is a party. You join in after it's started and leave before it's finished.' So wrote the New York society hostess and gossip columnist Elsa Maxwell, who knew more about parties than most, and who more than anyone else was responsible for opening up the idea of Monte Carlo as the destination of choice for wealthy visitors in the 1920s.
It was Elsa who was partly responsible for the design of the then newly-built Monte Carlo Beach Hotel, which was intended to rival Californian-style waterside hotels in its location and its facilities; and from 1929 she presided over any number of tennis and fancy dress parties around the sumptuous Olympic-sized pool.
Since Elsa's time, the hotel has undergone several transformations, including the enlargement of the rooms by hollowing out the rock (listed status meant that no new floors could be added), and, concluding this year, an entire redesign which, one senses, would have pleased Elsa no end.
Now the prestigious hotel, resplendent in its new crimson facade, colourful mosaics and Matisse-inspired decor, has reopened for the new season.
To benefit from the refurbished pool and new €4m spa centre, visitors can now book in to one of 40 hi-tech suites and rooms newly-designed for this five star jewel in Monaco's hotel crown by much sought-after Paris-based designer Inidia Mahdavi.
Born in Iran, Mahdavi has become a byword for contemporary chic in the major fashion capitals of the world: London, Milan, and New York, as well as Hong Kong and Mexico City. As well as her hotel projects, she has undertaken numerous commissions for private houses all over the world. A visit to the Monte Carlo Beach should tell you why.
Among its many attractions, the new Monte Carlo Beach boasts an exceptional restaurant overseen by master chef and 'Meilleur Ouvrier de France' Jean-Claude Brugel whose cuisine is considered some of the most inventive on the Riviera. And the name of the restaurant? Why, Elsa, of course. More information and interactive maps for the Monte Carlo Beach HotelBook a

a room at the Monte Carlo BayThe Monte Carlo Bay is more like an exclusive club than a hotel,
offering a wide range of activities and special packages on its garden
peninsula. With over 300 rooms and 21 suites, all with views of Monaco
or the Mediterranean, the hotel is at the centre of a paradise of
pleasure.
And that's particularly the case when it comes to dining: guests can
choose between two restaurants, the 'Blue Bay' and 'Las Brisas', open
all summer, and for lighter meals, the beautiful 'orangerie'-style
'Orange Verte' and 'Il Baretto'. Meanwhile, the 'Blue Gin' bar and
terrace serves up original cocktals and what is said to be the trendiest
programme of music in Monaco.
When it comes to wellbeing, the
Monte Carlo Bay is close to perfect: bathe or cool off in the Eden-like
lagoon, with its waterfalls and jacuzzis, or try the indoor swimming
pool surmounted by even more lush greenery. The Cinq Mondes Spa boasts
an elegant Turkish bath along with a gym and twelve cabins for luxurious
body and face treatments.
Although individual accommodation can be expensive, it's well worth
taking advantage of the many packages on offer, which start at around
€250 for two people, and run throughout the year. But if you fancy an
upgrade and could do with some spare cash, the hotel also houses one of
SBM's famous casinos!More

a room at the Métropole Hotel
Constructed in the 1880s, the Métropole is the perfect blend of the traditional and the modern. Set in the very heart of glamorous Monte Carlo, it’s a step away from the Métropole Gallery - a treasure trove of boutiques and luxury shops - and adjacent to the famous Casino itself.
The hotel's spa, roof-terrace and two Joel Robuchon restaurants make it one of the classiest places to stay, especally if you've come to the Place du Casino to win! 'If Monaco is one of the best places in the world to play a rich man's game, the Hotel Metropole is the place to stay while you're doing it', wrote Vogue last year. And there's every reason to agree with them.
Its 150 rooms and 60 suites assure guests of a memorable stay in a truly stylish and elegant setting, but of course the hotel staff want you to do so much more than that in Monaco, and they have developed an extensive activities programme including half-day and day excursions on the Mediterranean, helicopter flights, a day's wine-tasting at the Chateau Roubine in neighbouring Provence, and even piloting a jet plane.
Needless to say, none of these come without a price tag - a day in an F1 car on the circuit at Luc-en-Provence will set you back €2,750 including helicopter transfer, but all such treats must be weighed against the sheer thrill - and the stories you will dine out on for years! More

Last week Monaco’s Métropole was awarded the title 'World’s Best Hotel' at the annual convention of the 440 Leading Hotels of the World. We’re delighted that M Jean-Claude Messant, general manager of the Métropole and Hotelier of the Year, agreed to be interviewed by CityOut. CityOut: Can you tell us something about the competition? Jean-Claude Messant: Three years ago we won ‘Best Hotel in Europe’. This year, we were picked from the eight regional winners as best in the world. Other regional winners included beautiful hotels in the Maldives, St Moritz, Brazil and New York - the kind that are easily recognized as the world’s top hotels - so the competition was pretty big. CO: Do you feel proud to have come so high up in the ranks of the élite hotels in this part of Europe?J-CM: Very much so. We’re a young hotel and we’re pleased to have got here so quickly. Of course there was always a hotel here historically, but we’ve changed it completely since 2004. It’s like driving a Ferrari, compared with – well, I mustn’t name cars. CO: So what marks out the hotel as different now – is it less forbidding, less formal, perhaps?J-CM: When we worked on the concept back in 2002, we decided what we wanted - to feel from the moment you walk in a sense of luxury and elegance, of a classic – with a touch of modernism, and – as you say – less formal, with a welcoming attitude. Somewhere where you’re happy from the morning through to cocktails and beyond. We were very careful about selecting key people: Jacques Garcia, who was the designer, and the chef Joel Robuchon. People who were going to give their heart. They were part of a family. You know, you pay someone to design a hotel, but the work doesn’t stop there. He comes back later and brings observations and improvements. Design evolves and improves.CO: So you’re not some kind of grand museum. J-CM: People have changed. Maybe fifteen years ago the majority of our guests would be in their 50s and wear jacket and tie. Today guests may be 30-40 years old, but have the money and are well experienced in the art of travel. And they’re the future. Of course, the older generation are still our most valuable clients – but they want part of the action; we find they’re happy to be part of this new experience. CO: What would you say is the great achievement of the Métropole?J-CM: It’s about responding to what people want. It's a bit like with phones. In a month’s time you’ll replace your phone. It’s the same with, for example, hotel decor. Adapt, react, or people grow tired. Others must follow. Of course you watch the competition, but you just keep an eye on them in the mirror. It's also important to continue to attract local people living in Monaco. It's great to see Monaco ladies at lunch or in the lobby relaxing over a drink with a friend. CO: You spent some time on the other side of the Channel. How did your training in London prepare you for the rest of your career?J-CM: I’m from a traditional, classic hotel background. After training in Paris I went to work at the Dorchester and spent three years at the Ritz. It was like discovering a new world - I absolutely adored it. When I did my training in London, formality was the key word. But when it came to managing a hotel, I found I did so with a bit more Italian and French flair. You have to be strict but sometimes crazy! On the other hand, while imagination and creativity are crucial, the big question is how you make it work perfectly every day.CO: Is that what makes it a good job?J-CM: It’s a great job because it’s unpredictable. You don’t know what time you’re going to finish, you dont know who is going to walk through the door. I don’t know if you’ve heard of Hotel Babylon - before it was a TV series it was a book. It’s 24 hours in the life of a young hotel manager and in those 24 hours he meets all the challenges I have had in my life! People even die in hotels and you have to know how to deal with that! CO: Have you had any births at the hotel?J-CM: Not yet. But at one of my hotels I had two big Hollywood stars. I was there the night they met over a drink. Now they’re happily married with kids. Extraordinary. CO: And talking of weddings, how are you planning for next year’s major Monaco event?
In two ways. Firstly, we have to ensure that for the event itself we are able to accomodate guests coming to the Royal Wedding. The second is to create a buzz in terms of PR during the following months to show that Monaco is still on the map. We need to promote the principality beyond the wedding – that Monaco is the place to be. There will be hundreds of media organizations attending the wedding, and it’ll be seen all over the world so it's important that we project an elegant, positive image. How can we maximize that in a way that contributes to the long term future of the hotel and Monaco?
CO: Monaco’s the key.
You’re right. Now you can fly anywhere, you can go anywhere: Marbella, Majorca, Marrakesh, even New York, for the weekend. That's the real competition. The hotel is important but the destination is crucial.

Where: 10 bd Maréchal Juin, Cap d'Antibes, Juan-les-Pins
When: Open from April to October 2012
Web: http://www.ca-beachhotel.comWondering where to stay near Monaco? Following its €12 million makeover, the contemporary Cap d'Antibes Beach Hôtel, with its terraces and private beach, is once more becoming one of the must-stay ports of call for anyone visiting Monaco and the Côte d'Azur.
The exclusive 27-room hotel - which enjoys superb panoramic views over the Îles de Lérins and the glittering Mediterranean - is situated in a vibrant garden landscape midway between Cannes and Nice. It's only 25 minutes' drive from the airport, but equally easily accessible by boat - appropriately enough for a location which at one time was not much more than a group of fishermen's houses.
It's in tribute to those original occupants that the place has been known since time immemorial as the 'Maison des Pêcheurs', a name also reflected in the title of the gourmet restaurant, presided over by award winning Breton head chef Philippe Jégo. Both at the Michelin-starred 'Les Pêcheurs' (evenings, Apr-Oct) and at the beachside 'Le Cap' (lunch, Apr-Oct, evenings Jul-Aug) the 'Meilleur Ouvrier de France 2000' and his team offer a superb range of modern cuisine, brimming with flavour. Menus are priced at around €80, with à la carte prices from €100.
In its previous incarnation the Maison des Pêcheurs was home to an elegant clientele, attracting a top ten guest-list from the world of watersports, yachting, music and cinema. Notable visitors included Brigitte Bardot, Sophia Loren and Cary Grant; one of the world's first scuba diving clubs - with pioneers such as Jacques Cousteau - was set up here by the Aga Khan; and it was the scene for some of the most glamorous jazz evenings witnessed since the 1920s.
Now you too can partake in the dream by booking a stay in this idyllic setting, since 2010 part of the distinguished Relais & Châteaux chain. Juan les Pins, where this year's jazz festival takes place from 12 to 22 July, is on your doorstep, Cannes, home of the famous film festival, is just twenty minutes away by car, and as for watersports, well, take your pick!
The sheltered private beach, at 200 metres one of the most beautiful on the cape, is the perfect place to relax: surrounded by Mediterranean foliage, guests can choose between the comfort of the deep sofas shaded with white parasols or loll on creamy beige beach mattresses in an atmosphere that has to be experienced to be believed.
As with all top-rated hotels, a stay at the Cap d'Antibes Beach Hotel goes hand in hand with a full wellness programme, with superb facilities and services including a sensory pool, solarium, two treatment tents and an outdoor fitness area. Massages start at €70 for thirty minutes, and you can also take advantage of anti-aging treatments, facials, and a 'Sunrise' treatment to counter the effects of exposure to the elements. Where: Hotel Métropole Monte-Carlo
When: 25 November 2011 to 6 January 2012
It's hard to believe, while basking in the beautiful Indian summer, that soon it'll be time to start thinking about Christmas - but that's exactly what our friends at the Hotel Métropole have been doing, and this year they are promising a really spectacular stay inspired by the celebrated fantasy 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland'.
Entering the hotel through a lobby adorned with candyfloss and beautiful flowers, you may well feel that, like Lewis Carroll's heroine, you've shrunk several feet as your attention is drawn by the oversized furniture specially designed for the Christmas in Wonderland season. Having posed for souvenir photos next to the huge Christmas tree (embellished with giant biscuits and candies) a glance at your pocket watch will remind you not to be late for the pièce de résistance of the afternoon - the Mad Hatter's Tea Party, when Head Pastry Chef Patrick Mesiano will be serving up cakes, sweets and pastries galore along with the finest Ronnefeldt teas in an atmosphere that can only be described as truly enchanting.
Head Barman Eddy Montana (no doubt having reached for the magic bottle labelled 'Drink Me'), will be mixing a host of inspirational concoctions: for grown-ups, there's the 'Wonderland' cocktail (€24) made from fresh lychees, vodka and a strawberry foam, while children can enjoy their own 'Tiger Lily mocktail' (€18) with a Tagada strawberry base, apple juice and lychee infusion, or home-made lemonade.
And of course, no visit to Wonderland would be complete without a playroom where younger guests can delve into a world of card games, croquet and storytellers, as well as video games, an electric train circuit and, most important for all imaginative children, a reading area!
Not to be outdone, the Queen of Hearts has commanded Michelin-starred chef Joël Robuchon that the whole of his restaurant should be dressed in a colour scheme reflecting the red and black of playing cards, and here guests will be treated to a selection of wonderful six-course menus (Christmas Eve dinner €250, Christmas Day lunch €200, New Year’s Eve dinner €650 and New Year’s Day dinner €160 - all prices are per person and exclude drinks). To top off the feast, Pastry Chef Mesiano will create and design a series of exclusive Joël Robuchon miniature Yule Logs, including a 'Wonderland Log' made from hazelnut brownies, tiramisu cream and milk chocolate mousse. The 'Christmas in Wonderland' package includes
· Joël Robuchon breakfast
· Bottle of house Champagne on arrival

People who make Monaco: Serge Mandina

'Serge the Concierge' is one of the best-known faces of the award-winning Métropole Monte Carlo
Serge Mandina started his career in 1985 at the Loews Monte-Carlo, now the Fairmont Hotel, then progressed to the Negresco on Nice's Promenade des Anglais. Now he is Chef Concierge at the Métropole Monte Carlo. We asked him about his work and his typical day.
"It's been an ideal career path. I started as a junior – a 'commis' – in a restaurant, before being promoted to the position of junior sommelier, with a specific focus on wines and wine service, and later became a concierge, which has much more to do with guest relations and liaison with all the other departments within the hotel. Now I am Chef Concierge, which means a whole lot more responsibility, including managing a team of assistant concierges, bellboys and valet parking."Photos by Naneen RossiYour role means always having to be polite, even to the most demanding guests. Without naming names, what's been the most memorable or challenging task you 've been asked to perform?
"Once, a guest requested a private jet from Nice airport to Strasbourg. The cost was around €10,000 and the guest settled in cash, handing me the money in a briefcase in €20 and €50 notes; not a demanding guest," laughs Serge, "but certainly unusual! On another occasion, we had to buy one metre of freshly laid grass for a guest because he wanted to practice golf in his suite. And then there was the time we sent a helicopter to Nice airport just to buy a particular newspaper which we couldn't find in Monaco. Small things. But important!"Tell us something about your normal working day. Do you ever have time for a break?
"Well, we start the day dispatching all the newspapers for our guests, then we go to the post office to deal with the mountain of mail the hotel receives and needs to send. Of course we look after all the luggage and checking-in and out, taking care not only of the valet parking for the hotel guests but also the customers who arrive just for lunch or dinner in one of our restaurants. Later we may be making reservations for the opera, theatre, restaurants or helicopter transfers, and then there are cars to rent, boats, buses for excursions... All in all, we organise absolutely everything that a guest may request.
If it is a busy day, I don't really have time for a break; in fact I always prefer allowing a member of my team to take a break, while I stay at the Concierge Desk. If it is a quieter day and if I have a full team, I might manage a short coffee break."You are a member of the concierges' club, the Clefs d'Or. What does that mean, exactly, and what does it mean to you personally to be able to wear the 'golden keys' insignia?
"The 'Clefs d’Or' Concierge International Club is an institution, a group of all the concierges in the best hotels all over the world, with a national and international directory. If a guest wants to book something special (a car, a boat, flowers, an opera ticket) anywhere in the world, for example in Hong Kong, New York, Tokyo, Moscow, Bueno Aires or Sydney, we just need to call a colleague, a member of the Clefs d’Or, where the guest wants to finalise the request.
We help each other out and by being part of the same organisation, we can rely on each other in terms of quality of service and standards. On a personal level," adds Serge, with evident pride, "it's a real honour to be a member of this institution. “Clef d’Or” is an international distinction, representing the highest level of excellence in our industry. I am very proud to have achieved this."Photos by Naneen Rossi
Your lifetime of experience in the business makes you well-qualified to answer the question everyone wants to ask: what are the ingredients of an outstanding hotel?
"In my opinion, its interior design and the quality of the service. But but without great service, a beautiful hotel never gets to be a top hotel. At the Métropole Monte-Carlo, we put a great emphasis on a personalised service, always improving the professionalism of the team, whilst remaining friendly. It’s what we call the 'Luxury Attitude'.
Finally, Serge, as a concierge, you must be completely au fait with all the latest developments and openings in Monaco and environs. What are the current ‘must do’ and ‘must see’ that you would recommend to a discerning guest at the Métropole?
"There are so many things to do and to visit in and around Monaco. Besides the must-do sightseeing - such as the historical part of the city, the Oceanographic Museum, the cathedral, the prince’s palace, the exotic garden (unique in the world with fantastic panoramic views of Monaco and the Mediterranean sea), and the casino - there are lots of cultural activities. Monaco has become an increasingly dynamic country with many art galleries and exhibitions, and a great variety of ballet, theatre and concerts. The New National Museum of Monaco is also a must, including the Villa Sauber and the Villa Paloma with their current exhibitions.
Port Hercule has become one of the best areas in Monaco to hang out, with a great choice of restaurants, bars and clubs: Before, the newly re-opened La Rascasse, Black Legend for live Motown music, the Explorer's, a new gastro-pub concept. There are also established places such as the Sabor di Vino, a traditional wine bar, located right next to the hotel, and great traditional Italian restaurants. In terms of restaurants, I would of course always recommend our own – the Joel Robuchon Monte-Carlo (2 Michelin stars) and Joel Robuchon’s first ever Japanese venture, Yoshi (1 Michelin star) as priorities. A stay at the Hotel Métropole Monte-Carlo would not be complete without the experience of any of them!

Web: http://www.preferredhotels.com
This summer, you'll be able to travel back in time to the golden age of
Riviera tourism when the Hotel Le Beauvallon near St Tropez re-opens its
doors following an extensive refit. Its 57 rooms and suites, each with
private butler service, have been entirely redecorated, while the
stunning new 'sky floor' offers luxury suites and the added attraction
of a breathtaking view over the bay of Saint-Tropez. 43.2888855|6.6043615||Beauvallon, 83310 Grimaud, France
This
is a distinctly 21st century experience, but the refurbishment has been
done with such care and attention to historical detail that guests will
find themselves effortlessly drawn into the world of glamour that so
appealed to the Churchills, the Kennedys, and film stars such as Audrey
Hepburn and Albert Finney, who came here to film 'Two for the Road'.
The
Spa Garden has no fewer then seven suites, all ecologically constructed
and each with a private pool, while the 15 acres of grounds include
exotic Mediterranean gardens rolling down to the shore, and views across
the bay to Saint-Tropez and Pampelonne Beach, accessible by the
provided private shuttle boat.
In the original oak yard behind
the hotel, the new Eco Luxe Spa will open in 2011 with organic
treatments. Add to these facilities the new restaurant and Beach Club,
as well as exclusive access to Beauvallon Golf Club and Beauvallon
Tennis Club - and you can see that a stay at the Hotel Le Beauvallon is
really an immersion in the art of wellbeing. Pleasure Palace
Emile Bernheim could not have chosen a worse time to complete his pet
project, a splendid palace-style hotel at Beauvallon.
At the end of 1913, Europe was a heartbeat away from what would be the
most devastating war ever fought, but this patriotic Parisian
businessman did not let that a global conflict dissuade him. In a
spontaneous act of generosity, he handed the completed villa over to the
French Red Cross to use as a convalescent home for wounded soldiers.
The hotel would later reprise that role during the Second World War,
when it was occupied by Italian and German troops until the arrival of
the US army in August 1944. 43.28906138829772|6.604800224304199||Boulevard des Collines, 83310 Grimaud, France
It was the thirties, the time of
'entre deux guerres', that made the hotel's name, when, as the Golf
Hotel, it played host to the then 'jet-set' which included, among
others, F Scott Fizgerald, author of The Great Gatsby and the novel that
was inspired by the Riviera, Tender is the Night. Even though the
Beauvallon was not itself the model for Fitzgerald's 'Hotel des
Etrangers', it's still easy to conjure up some of the atmosphere of the
period while wandering in the shade of the mimosa and pine in the the
beautiful valley which gives its name to the hotel.
In 1997 the hotel was privately bought and is now a member of the luxury hotel group Preferred Hotels and Resorts, a collection of more than 185 leading hotels and resorts in the world's most desirable locations.

Situated between Cannes and Grasse, this former 18th-century farmhouse still retains its original olive grove, and with the mediaeval village of Mougins not far away, a visit here is like stepping back in time – although the shepherd who until forty years ago tended this beautiful Provencal landscape has gone, alas.
The hotel takes its name from thelarge cypress tree which used to dominate the surrounding landscape. Nicknamed ‘La Candille’ (the Provencal word for ‘candle’), it was a meeting place and a symbol of freedom for those who supported the French Revolution at the end of the 18th century. Napoleon rested near here briefly on his return from Elba in 1815, and in more recent times French President Giscard d'Estaing and the King of Belgium stayed at Le Mas.

No doubt they would all be delighted to know that their favourite spot has been further developed. The luxury hotel now comprises twenty rooms in two beautiful farmhouses, six luxury suites in a separate villa, and the first Japanese-style Shiseido Spa in Europe. All the essential ingredients, in fact,to raise this splendid hotel’s status to five-star.
Le Candille restaurant is a one-Michelin starred establishment, headed by renowned chef Serge Gouloumès, whose Provençal-style cooking – including foie gras and armagnac, and Simmental beef with truffles - can be enjoyed in the dappled shade of the orangery or in the elegant dining room.
Packages and special offers include a €345 for two persons deal for August, and a two-day golf package with one of the many professional courses in the area, including green fees.
Serge Gouloumès runs a cookery course which can be booked online or on +33 4 92 28 43 43

Hotel Métropole Monte-Carlo receives highest accolade at the annual Leading Hotels of the World convention

Three years after winning the title 'Best Hotel in Europe', the Hotel Métropole has received the highest accolade awarded by
the Leading Hotels of the World, an international network of 440 prestigious
hotels and resorts providing excellence in the art of hospitality.

The Monte-Carlo-based hotel was the clear winner at the annual convention, held in Tokyo on 19
November - which also saw the hotel’s General Manager, Jean-Claude Messant, voted 'Hotelier of the Year'. Accepting his award, he spoke with typical modesty, picking out for special mention chef Joel Robuchon, and Susan Harmsworth, the English woman behind the ESPA spa concept.

'I am immensely proud, along with my team, to have brought Hotel Métropole Monte-Carlo to such
a high level of recognition just six years since opening. This award is
undoubtedly one of the greatest honours for a hotelier to receive and I
dedicate it to the crew of this fine ship, as well as the big names of
the Métropole Monte-Carlo who have offered their support since the
beginning of this wonderful adventure, in particular: Joël Robuchon, Susan Harmsworth, Jacques Garcia, Beatrice Ardisson and Didier Gomez.'
The prestigious award was the result of a rigorous inspection based on over 1,500 criteria, in which Hotel
Métropole Monte-Carlo received the highest overall score of all member
hotels, based on the consistency, quality of service and excellence of
facilities.

Hotel Métropole Monte-Carlo has been a member of Leading Hotels of the
World since January 2004. In April 2006, the Métropole ESPA Monte-Carlo
was launched, subsequently becoming part of the close-knit circle of Leading
Spas of the World.

Its famous outline silhouetted against the deep blue of the Riviera sky, this authentic Art Deco palace looks like something straight out of the pages of F Scott Fitzgerald. Hardly surprising, since the novelist lived here with his wife Zelda during the summer of 1926 while he was working on Tender is the Night. The Villa Saint Louis was converted four years later into the Hôtel Belles Rives, and today it still remembers its famous occupants in the form of the Fitzgerald piano bar, where guests can still capture much of the sophistication and atmosphere of the 1920s, including a civilized Sunday afternoon tea.
Situated directly on the waterfront in
the Riviera town of Antibes, close to Cannes and easily accessible from Monaco, the hotel's beautifully appointed rooms and suites have views over the Cap d'Antibes and the sparkling waters of the Mediterranean. In fact, this is the perfect location for anyone visiting the Riviera for one of the many boating events, such as the Monaco Yacht Show or its younger and more intimate sibling, the Antibes Yacht Show, which takes place each April as a taster to the main event.
Lovers of the sea will find direct access to the sea and a private beach as well as a pier suitable for water sports and docking. Nearby cultural attractions include the Musée de la Mer, a short boat ride away on the neighbouring Îles de Lerin - set in a fortress which reputedly held The Man in the Iron Mask - as well as the splendid Musée Picasso and the annual Juan les Pins jazz festival, held each July.
For gastronomes, the Festival de la Mer restaurant (opposite the Casino of Juan les Pins and owned by the same group as the Hotel) specializes in fish and seafood, and is an absolute must for all lovers of oysters.

Nowadays, saunas, hammams, and hydrotherapy are part and parcel of every luxury hotel.
And in the sparkling world of 'wellness', it doesn't get much better than this: last week, the annual Villégiature Awards - which reward the 'best of the best' on the European Hotel scene - took place at the Hyatt Vendome Hotel in Paris, handing the prize for Best Spa Hotel to the Fairmont Monte Carlo for its Willow Stream Spa.
The awards were made by a jury of 21, including the French correspondents of the BBC, El Pais, the Corriere della Sera, Vogue, and the editor of Le Figaro magazine. With strong competition from Istanbul, Lugano and Cannes, the Willow Stream stood out for the comfort and sophistication of its specialized treatments in a breathtaking setting with some of the best views over the Mediterranean.
The Villégiature is the latest in a atring of awards to be picked up by the luxury Monte Carlo hotel. Last year, Conference & Incentive Travel magazine chose it as its silver medallist in the category 'Best Overseas Conference Hotel'. It is also included in Condé Nast Traveller's 'Top 100 Hotels in Southern Europe' voted for by readers of this magazine; Expedia's Best Hotels in the World' for the excellence of its service, its solid experience and its remarkable value; and Trip Advisor's 'Best Hotel in the Best Destination in the World' this June, a victory based on the opinions of thousands of travellers on its web site.

Looking for a dazzling location for an autumn or winter getaway?
Book a room at the Palais de la Mediterranee
The 5-star Palais de la Méditerranée is an impressive building on the Nice seafront,
recognizable from its original Art Deco façade, and promising untold splendour
and luxury within. Built in 1929, the hotel saw all the celebrities of the day
pass through its doors, many of them part of the influential circle of the
American billionaire Frank Gould. A dream palace in marble, crystal and stained
glass, the hotel became as famous for its sumptuous appearance as for the
myriad illustrious names who passed through its doors.
Despite the fact that the hotel has been substantially rebuilt in recent
years, it still has its famous façade (cleverly incorporated into the design of
the new pool terrace), the restored historic Casino (all chandeliers and
stained glass); and an enviable reputation as one of the most opulent hotels of the
French Riviera.

Entering any of the 188 plush, spacious rooms, or gazing out at the
panoramic sweep of the Baie des Anges, it’s quite easy to believe you’ve
been transported back to the glamorous era when this place was the haunt of Mr Gould
and his friends. Except now, as well as a stunning nine storeys of imaginative new
architecture, visitors also benefit from all the innovations of modern hotel living:
gastronomic restaurant, fitness rooms, and – for larger parties – an array of beautifully-appointed meeting and conference rooms.
The flagship bar-terrace-restaurant, under the guidance of head chef Cédric Biron, has a strikingly original yet luxurious appeal, with the main dining room furnished in specially imported Padouk wood which gives the restaurant not only its name but also a rich, deep colour as sophisticated as the menu itself.

This boutique luxury hotel, set in a leafy avenue of Cap d’Ail, provides excellent value for money. A stone's throw from Monaco, it's perfectly located for the frequent train service to Italy, Nice and Cannes.
The building itself, like many of the villas in the area, dates from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, and its belle-epoque appearance has changed little since the days when it was a private house which the late Prince Rainiervisited as a child.
Its 14 elegant rooms all have en-suite bathrooms and air-conditioning,
enabling visitors to enjoy a relaxed and refreshing holiday. In
addition, there's a private bar, private garden for those all-essential
cocktails, and excellent breakfasts. Business travellers are well
catered for in terms of fully-equipped meeting rooms and complimetary
wifi access.
If you're planning a trip to the Monaco Yacht Show or the Monaco Grand
Prix, this is an inexpensive alternative to staying in Monaco itself.
On the other hand, if you prefer to stay put in Cap d'Ail, the immediate vicinity of the hotel has much to offer: magnificent villas, beautiful
coastal walks and wonderful restaurants on the edge of the
Mediterranean; and the nearby Réserve de la Mala and Plage de Passableare both great for beach-lovers.
Nearby attractions include the Villa Kerylos, a stunning recreation of an ancient Greek home, perched on the very edge of the sea, and the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild, whcih every summer plays host to a festival of opera. More

Book
a
room at the Royal Riviera
Known as the Bedford when it was first built in 1904, the five-star Royal Riviera Hotel in Saint Jean Cap Ferrat has always been the hotel of choice for the most sophisticated clientele.
As you check in, you're joining a long list of the great and the good (and sometimes the bad!) to have stayed here: Leopold II, William II, the Princess Galitzine and the Prince of Wales, great names from the Almanac de Gotha mingling with the cultured upper classes of French society.
Royal Riviera - a timeless location
Perched on the peninsula of Cap Ferrat, not far from the Villa Kerylos and the Villa Ephrussi, the hotel exudes elegance: cool marble flooring, delicate panelling, and high-ceilinged rooms, all set in a landscape of orange and olive groves. A blend of Art Deco and neo-classical influences, the Royal Riviera gazes out over the blue immensity of the Mediterranean Sea from sunny terraces and gardens, conjuring up for modern visitors all the chic of a bygone age.
In 1999, Grace Leo-Andrieu, the renowned hotelier of the Lancaster in Paris, oversaw the complete restoration of this 'grand dame' of the French hotel scene , and since then the hotel has become one of the world's most exclusive.
Royal Riviera - time to relaxIn the aptly-named Panorama restaurant, chef Bruno le Bolch conjures up a Mediterranean cuisine with a twist of his own such as scallops with truffle, sole meuniere with lemon risotto, and the fresh flavours of locally picked wild fruit. During the summer, guests can lunch and dine outside at the Pergola. But perhaps the most important features for the comng months are the private beach, Sundari spa, and relaxing swimming pool.
"I would stay here again just for its location on a private beach between Nice and Monaco", writes one visitor for Conde Nast Traveller (who consistently place the hotel in their Gold List of the world's best hotels) "The sea, mountain, and garden views from the balconies are just wonderful".

La Réserve de Beaulieu

a
room at the Réserve de Beaulieu
La Réserve de Beaulieu is a legend among Riviera hotels. Originally a luxury seafood restaurant, it gained its nickname from the fish-pond ('reserve') which accommodated the daily catch before it was served up to the demanding aristocratic clientele. Soon the great and the good, from the Almanac de Gotha to celebrated writers such as Leo Tolstoy, to the new 'royalty' of Hollywood, were coming to stay here; and their modern-day counterparts are in no mood to break that tradition.
The majority of La Reserve's 39 rooms, suites and villas - all
beautifully appointed in Florentine style with frescoes and period
furniture - have stunning views over the Mediterranean, and are
decorated with black-and-white autographed
photographs of personalities who have resided here.
As far as dining goes, well, how far can you go? There's not much to beat the fabulous two-Michelin-starred Restaurant des Rois - so called because of its patrons, who included the kings of Belgium and of Sweden. For an aperitif or nightcap, there's the Gordon Bennett bar, named in honour of the American newspaper owner who put the hotel on the map in the roaring twenties.
For that essential Riviera wellbeing, the hallmark of any luxury hotel worth its salt, there's a Turkish bath, jacuzzi, a fitness
room and ten cabins for personal treatments including massages both regular and exotic (the latter with bamboo, hot stones, or even hot chocolate), as well as a full beauty-care programme.

Listed by both Condé Nast and the World's Top Hotels, the Château de la Chèvre d'Or is one of the most delightful of all Riviera hotels. Situated in the cliff-top mediaeval village of Eze, the aptly-named Chèvre d'Or (its name means Golden Goat) might be hard to find, but that's part of the joy of being here: in this tucked away corner of the Riviera you will find yourself a world away from the busy world of the coast, but close enough to Monaco or Nice if you're in need of a city fix.
The hotel has thirty exclusive rooms and six new suites, two recently completed and named after artists who stayed in Èze, Jean Cocteau and Luis Navarro, both lifelong friends of Picasso. The message is uncompromisingly all about taste and wellbeing: each room has its own jacuzzi bath, while the hotel's spa, hammam and solarium are always available, and there's ayurvedic massage and ashtanga vinyasa yoga in the garden.
There are three restaurants - each with a panoramic view over the Mediterranean - including the two-Michelin-star 'La Chèvre d'Or' and the poolside Café du Jardin, as well as a friendly jazz bar. Sundeck and private gardens complete the picture for anyone wanting to spend a few days or longer relaxing in this most hospitable of hotels.
Èze itself is a remarkable throwback into the history of the middle ages, and the views over the Mediterranean from a height of 1500 feet are some of the most breathtaking anywhere along the coast. Inland, you're just a few minutes from St Paul de Vence, home of arts and artists for generations, with galleries and workshops in plenty to explore. The Grand Hotel comes with a pedigree: presidents, princesses - including Queen Victoria's daughter - celebrated artists including Pablo Picasso and film-stars such asDavid Niven have all chosen to spend time here, so it's hardly surprising that the hotel is still considered a benchmark for guests' expectations of luxury and good taste.
Set among the peaceful pine groves of St Jean Cap Ferrat, the 73 rooms - recently redesigned by top interior designer Pierre-Yves Rochon - all give exceptional panoramic views of the sea and exquisite gardens of the hotel, with its acres of terraces and cascading pools.
If it's gourmet dining you're after, Michelin chef Didier Anies serves top-quality seasonal produce: succulent fish and meat dishes, accompanied by the finest vintages drawn from a wine-list of over 600 labels. In addition, the Club Dauphin (accessed by cable car) offers a provençal summer buffet throughout the summer season, served at the side of an Olympic-sized sea-water swimming pool.
The hotel has recently established a world-class spa, offering guests the chance to recover from the rigours of the highlife! Here you will find an exclusive range of face and body treatments, while in the outdoor spa gardens you can treat yourself to a massage overlooking the sea.
And like everything at this superb hotel, service here is five-star: as well as bookings for restaurants, airport transfer and boat hire, you can also benefit from a range of concierge services including baby-sitting, limousine with driver and interpreters.
For real exclusivity, however, think about booking one of the four rooms in the separate'Rose Villa' (below) an iconically beautiful palace in the grounds of the main hotel. This completely private villa can be booked for a week, a fortnight, a month or even an entire year. More

Book a room at the Hotel du
Cap Eden RocFrom the end of the nineteenth century, the Villa Soleil welcomed writers in search of inspiration, and by the 1920s (when, renamed the Eden Roc, it served as the model for Gausse's Hotel in F.Scott Fitzgerald's Tender is the Night) it had become the destination of choice for hundreds of celebrity vistors.
Not much has changed. The allure of that novel and the hotel's long association with Hollywood is clear from the guest list, which includes names from Fred Astaire to John Wayne, and in recent years, Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt, Leonardo di Caprio and Celine Dion.
There is a wide range of rooms and suites to choose from, while those who require a little more privacy and exclusivity can take advantage of the newly-constructed Villa Eleana, just a few steps away from the main
hotel. Service is one of the most memorable features of a stay here, with review after review praising the friendliness and helpfulness of the staff - worth its weight in gold.
Dining, as always on the Cote d'Azur, is an unforgettable experience, as testified to by the hotel's showpiece gourmet restaurant. Moreover, in the shape of Lilian Bonnefoi, the Reserve has one of the best pastry chefs in the world, awarded the highest accolade in 2008. More

a room at the Chateau Eza
'From the sun did I learn this, when it goeth down, the exuberant one:
gold doth it then pour into the sea, out of inexhaustible riches.' These famous lines from Thus spoke Zarathustra were written in the winter of 1883 by Friedrich Nietzsche, one of the most devoted admirers of the mediaeval village of Èze, just twenty minutes due west of Monte Carlo.
And it's easy to see what captivated him. The steepest village on the French Riviera offers the most breathtaking panoramic views of the Mediterranean, and explains why Èze has become one of the world's top holiday destinations.
The sheer romance of the old stone-built chateau, clinging to its rocky
bastion overlooking the Mediterranean, has guaranteed this 4-star pearl of a luxury hotel its consistently high ratings in the international press - and when you throw in the Michelin-starred restaurant, the deal is pretty much sealed.
Known until 1976 as 'The Prince of Sweden's Castle' , the Chateau Eza was indeed owned until that date by Prince William, who had first set eyes on it during a boat trip with his father King Gustav. From then on it has never looked back. Successively restored by its next two owners, the hotel now has the feel of a comfortable home while at the same time offering spectacular views of unrivalled majesty.
Come here to see: the view; the Friedrich Nietzsche Walk; the sculpture gardens in the ruins of the castle.More

Saint-Paul's little gem - twenty years young
They say when you're in love, you always feel twenty, and nowhere does that saying apply more than to the timeless charm of Relais and Chateaux' Le St-Paul, an old stone residence which carries itself with all the assured elegance of a true aristocrat, and which has just celebrated its twentieth birthday. To stay here is to reconnect with the values of relaxation and refinement that you'd expect from a traditional French welcome.
Gazing out from a mediaeval peak over the stupendous views of the surrounding plain and the azure coast beyond, the hotel's 16 deluxe rooms seem to tell a story of endless comfort.
Enshrined within the ramparts of Saint-Paul, famous for its artists, the Relais St-Paul (****L) is an intimate jewel of a place, offering a point of stillness in an often turbulent world. It's the kind of place that doesn't make a great fuss, but whispers knowingly only to the initiated.
Acquired in 1987 as an abandoned ruin, and following an epic re-build, the St-Paul opened its doors in June 1989. Since 2004 it has been under the ownership of the Baglioni Group of Hotels, whose Roberto Polito specializes in creating accommodation of real character and charm. Along with the St-Paul, the Villa Gallici in Aix-en-Provence, the Château de Mirambeau in Charentes-Maritimes, the Royal Champagne in Champagne, the Château de Codignat in the Auvergne and the Hôtel Cala del Porto in Tuscany together form a network of luxury accommodation where they really know about the good life.
Chef Ludovic Puzenat, who has managed the kitchens here since 2006, offers a menu replete with the scents of Provence, and transforms local produce with a magic touch which has won him a coveted Michelin star. Trained under top chefs in Dijon, Vezelay, Lyon and Epernay, he now celebrates the South with an unconditional devotion.
In his hands, roast lobster, flaked spider-crab or braised shank enjoy a disarmingly easy dialogue with polenta, figs or zucchini flowers. These flavours are amplified by the suggestions of sommelier Gaylord Goulette, and culminate in the desserts of pastry chef Julien Cirino. The whole culinary adventure can be experienced in the vaulted dining room or, in sunny weather, on the terrace.
The future of this little gem has now been entrusted to a new director, Domenico Biamonti, former director and sales manager of luxury hotels in Monaco, the Port Palace, the Metropolis Monte Carlo and the Fairmont Hotel.
This understated location awaits the discovery of all conoisseurs.
Restaurant open daily from 12:30 to 1:45 and from 7.30 to 9.45 pm from April to October.
