Inside the mind of a child genius

How the early life and times of Montaigne can inspire us all
Riviera Tutors’ Toby Parker-Rees looks at the remarkable upbringing of French intellectual Michel Montaigne, and why it can serve as an inspiration to anyone looking to achieve educational excellence.Blame it on the parents
Michel de Montaigne’s father was a well-read nobleman who liked to vault
tables on his thumbs. He sent his son to live with peasants in the
local village for the first three years of his life. This was the first
stage of a carefully planned, albeit maverick, upbringing designed to
raise a genius. Young Michel would go on to become one of the greatest
writers in history and William Shakespeare’s favourite author.Michel de Montaigne was Shakespeare's favourite authorWho said Latin was dead?
When he was three-years-old, Montaigne returned to the family chateau in
Bordeaux. For the next few years he was allowed to speak only Latin –
and no member of the household could speak to him in French (this had
the knock-on effect of creating an unusually literate set of servants,
whose classical vocabulary stayed with the surrounding villages for
generations). His father brought in a young German tutor to help things
along – no one in the chateau spoke Latin well enough to hold a
conversation with the curious child.
Learning from the best
The tutor lived with the family, as was usual, and worked with young
Montaigne throughout the day. Lessons took the form of friendly
conversations – games featured heavily, and there was live music in the
background. The little lord learnt easily. Knowledge and ideas were
elaborate toys.
Reaping the benefits
When he grew up Montaigne invented the essay. He took ideas for vigorous
rambles, because he was comfortable in their company. He ushered in the
intellectual playfulness that let Hamlet have silly parts and puns. He
gave every area of humanity an interested prod, considering everything
and judging nothing – ‘I have never seen a greater monster or miracle
than myself’.
Riviera Tutors’ approach
At Riviera Tutors we want our students to learn like Montaigne. Our
tutors are generally graduates from Oxford and Cambridge, where the
one-on-one tutorial is still the principal teaching method. Oxbridge
students have to talk and think at the level of the world-class scholar
sitting opposite them, because there’s no one else to talk to. This is
experience we want to pass on.
The art of teaching
For Montaigne, for the students of Oxford and Cambridge, and for our
tutees, there are no distractions – there is no one to impress by
showing off. Learning is the only thing to do. We do not patronise, and
we do not force the issue. Good conversation demands the generosity of
mutual respect. Our students learn to use their knowledge – taking it
out to play with instead of letting it moulder in boxes between tests.
100% success rate
We are immensely proud of the work we have done so far on the Riviera –
we have never failed to help a tutee get into their chosen school, and
our clients’ testimonials speak of ‘cherishing’ our ‘special attention
and care’. This is all part of good conversation. We would love to hear
from you too.Toby Parker-Rees graduated with a First in English Literature from Cambridge. He won the Homerton English Prize (twice) and is a published poet and playwright. On the other hand, there are students who pick things up very quickly in the classroom, which can lead to a misplaced sense of their own brilliance - a fertile breeding ground for sloppiness and laziness. History is littered with characters that flourished early at school, only to find they lacked the rigor and discipline to sustain their success. You won’t have heard of them. In such cases as these, it is the job of a good teacher to rein in the ego and remind the student that success in exams at all levels is more to do with methodical preparation than anything else. Belief that one’s brightness is alone is enough to attain the highest grade is a hindrance, and can be a significant one.
It is the job of the teacher, therefore, to counteract the natural leanings of a student, where those leanings need to be counteracted, and in doing so help them find their own voice, talents and balance.
2 - Be organised.Case Study – IGCSEs.
The years between 14-16 are often difficult for the developing student. Time to break free, stretch boundaries and discover the world. Unfortunately, the world decrees that it’s also the time that you take your first major public exams. We’ll take the IGCSEs as our guinea pig. The major problem we find with students is that they often feel simply overwhelmed by the volume of material they have to revise. Combine this with areas of weak understanding, and it’s easy to become disheartened.
The trick is to be organised.
Once you start your final year in September you should be thinking about the exams in May of the next year. Treat the January mocks like the real thing; this will give you a strong foundation that will make the following months more relaxed and enjoyable – you can spend the time polishing your skills, rather than frantically trying to assimilate the basics.
Work extremely hard over Christmas. Really push yourself. Divide up each subject into sensible chapters (your text book should already do this for you), and create a timetable that incorporates all of them, giving extra time and weight to weaker areas.
Success in each subject is largely a matter methodical revision, whether the subject is plant cell walls or the Wall Street Crash – it’s just factual information dressed up differently. On top of this, each subject has a particular exam technique that should be second nature come exam time. It’s the job of a good teacher to make sure you know this.Riviera Tutors

university admissions statement, giving you the best chance with the
world’s top universities. Excel
There is a common misconception that the kind of applicant universities
prize above all others is a ‘Jack of all trades’. This is categorically
untrue. The top universities are looking for diversity within their
classes, but not necessarily within each student. Whilst having many
interests is indeed positive, it is also important to be outstanding at
something. It is often better to offer something distinctive
(photography, piano, painting) and to have excelled at it through years
of dedication, than to have tried a number of things, without ever
having committed fully.Mastering something is a sure way to stand outLead
Whilst there can only be one captain of the football team or one
principal violinist in the orchestra, everyone can lead at something.
Whether it’s setting up a debating club, or teaching the Duke of
Edinburgh Award to younger students, there are plenty of opportunities
to adopt some kind of leadership role. Leadership is one of the most
attractive things to flaunt on an application letter, as it presents the
applicant as someone who would be likely to make a proactive and
positive contribution to the university and to the academic department
they are applying to.Be altruistic
It’s never too early to start acting charitably and a side-benefit of
helping those less fortunate than yourself whilst at school, is that it
shows universities that they are dealing with someone who goes out of
their way to help others. Get involved with a charity or volunteer
scheme, raise awareness about a specific cause, organise a cake-bake or
lead (that word again) a sponsored walk. All of these things reflect
very well on you as a person. Don’t keep your kindness bottled up
inside; share it with the world and let the universities know about it
too. Go beyond your syllabus
Everyone knows, at least vaguely, the details of their course. Not
everyone reads around their subjects, exploring topics that no teacher
has broached. Ski some fresh tracks down an area of interest and
mention this in your application. Be creative and enjoy yourself. One
of Riviera Tutors’ main principles (and it’s not a complicated one) is
that if you enjoy your work, you’re likely to do better at it. Don’t
read around a subject simply because you think universities will respect
it; read something that interests you, and see where it leads with an
open mind. Then tell universities about the journey. It’s a more
enjoyable process, and more interesting to read about.Be authentic
The web is full of ‘guides to getting into university’, such as this.
Take the main points, but never let them override who you are, or
distract from your story. There is no substitute for authenticity, and
no story more interesting than your own if it’s told properly by you.
Part of a successful application essay is not to try to replicate ‘the
perfect application’, but to present yourself and your achievements in
the best possible light. We often take our own character and
achievements for granted, so sit down with those who know you best and
go through your ‘profile’, although it’s much better for everyone if you
think of it as a ‘story’, because that’s what it is.For further help with UK and US university applications, including

Residential Tuition - the Riviera Tutors Way

Why one-to-one Residential Tuition works
Residential Tuition is the method of teaching favoured by Riviera Tutors. Luke Sullivan, founder of Riviera Tutors, explains what it is,
why it works, and why Riviera Tutors is the leading expert on
Residential Tuition in and around MonacoWhat is Residential Tuition?

It’s when a tutor works with a student intensively at their home. It
can be for a variety of purposes, from polishing up subjects that a
student finds difficult at school, to a full-blown IGCSE revision
campaign, to home schooling – one of its advantages is that it’s as
flexible as the client needs it to be. The only thing certain beforehand
is the quality of the tutor, and we base everything on this premise.Riviera Tutors are experts in Residential Tuition
How does it work for passing entrance exams?

If a student has to take a particular entrance exam, such as Common
Entrance, and has not been especially well prepared by their school,
then it is likely that quite a lot of work will need to be done in order
to bridge the curriculum gap. An expert tutor can pinpoint the
specific topics that do not correlate, before teaching them.
Residential tuition gives the tutor enough time to communicate a
substantial amount of information, and go over it several times, so that
a student can thoroughly assimilate the material. The benefit of the
extra time means that the pace of the work is set by the student – not
so fast that they can’t take anything in, not so slow that they get
bored. How key is the relationship between tutor and pupil?
The tutor-student dynamic is extremely important; there is a deeply
personal aspect to good teaching. After meeting the family, we select
tutors that we think will match the student’s personality. This helps
them to cultivate a friendship that makes the learning process more
efficient and enjoyable – lessons should be fun. Riviera Tutors could
not be happier if a student considers their tutor to be like a bigger
brother or sister; someone they can look up to and admire. For this
reason, we try to find a balance between experience and age in our
recruitment – our tutors are eminently qualified, but also young enough
for the students to identify with..Where are your tutors based?
Another advantage of residential tuition is that it allows us to pick
the best tutors regardless of their location. Because our tutors travel
to meet the family – whether at home or on holiday – they are not
limited by geography. We are not dealing with the best ‘local’ tutors;
we are dealing with the best tutors full stop. What is the impact of Residential Tutoring?
Riviera Tutors deal exclusively with residential tuition because it is
the proven best way to achieve a dramatic transformation in the shortest
space of time. Only through residential tuition can a tutor help the
student in depth with all their IGCSEs, and shift all of their grades
up. Only through residential tuition can the tutor spend an evening
watching a dramatisation of Hamlet, to compliment the reading. Only
through residential tuition can the tutor and student head out into the
garden and build a bottle rocket. Are there any limitations?
Time is of course a factor, and we always advise getting in touch as
early as possible. This allows us to draw up a timescale - there’s no
harm in finding out that it’s too early to start intense revision, and
it’s better than being too late. The flexibility offered by residential
tuition means that a Riviera Tutor can travel to a student’s home, or
can join them on a family holiday – from St Moritz to St Barths – no
destination is too exotic or too far.Learn more about how Riviera Tutors can help you or your children achieve excellence at www.riviera-tutors.comAbout Riviera TutorsTwo secret tips for study successTips on writing the university essayCase study of a child geniusCityOut Directory: Riviera Tutors
Read more...

She moved to Monaco in 2011 and in 2013 opened a Tachibana Japanese Esthetic Salon in Monte-Carlo. CityOut finds out she how relaxing is mixing business and pleasure in the Principality.Masayo, why did make the move to Monaco?
The main reason was to come to Europe to expand my business and treat international, high-society, wealthy people who are seeking to look their best. Not only did I want to grow my brand but people here really appreciate their personal well-being.Your new Monaco salon promotes the ‘Tachibana Method’ What is this?
The Tachibana method is a unique system combining a range of Eastern and Western well-being treatments and philosophies. All Tachibana salons are dedicated to putting this system into practice and achieving results. Our focus is on an integrated health, beauty and relaxation offering. Masayo TachibanaOne of your beliefs is a client’s body shape can be altered easily and naturally without the need for cosmetic surgery?
I believe the body - for men and woman - is like clay. As you move the flesh, it changes shape. To that end, the body can be re-shaped to achieve better form, especially for women. I believe women who are too thin are not attractive or healthy. Rather, by molding a woman’s natural curves with traditional holistic methods – herbs, oils, creams, aromatherapy - a shapely, toned figure can be achieved. The same philosophy applies to the face. Benefits of a Tachibana treatment can help to lift the skin, reduce water retention and facial puffiness and help reduce signs of ageing. What clients are you serving here in Monaco?
We do naturally cater for a large client base of Japanese customers, but we welcome everyone. Male or female; young and old. People who seek the top beauty treatment and relaxation techniques would prefer Tachibana. In Monaco our clients are truly international, like the community here. It is for that reason we have staff who speak Japanese, English and French.Masayo at work serving a client in her Monaco salonWhat do you personally enjoy most about life in Monaco?
The morning view of the Mediterranean Sea; Being able to mix with a vibrant community and great social scene in Monaco. Also meeting new people from different backgrounds and cultures makes me happy. What’s next for the Tachibana brand?
My goal is to go global and open more salons worldwide. I am developing a Tachibana Group franchise model, so others can be trained in the Tachibana Method. I will also continue to develop new products and treatments for clients.

Kay Hare - Portrait of a Riviera Artist

Discover the dreamlike qualities of painter Kay Hare
Kay Hare is a Monaco-based fine-art painter. Originally from North England, Kay moved to Monaco in 2011 and the classically trained artist's work focuses on dreamlike, ethemeral visions, representing the imagination and its subconscious wanderings. Can you give a little background as to how you became an artist?
I've been painting professionally for 20 years. My painting started in my late teens when I was provided free studio space in return for working and raising funds for the long term unemployed and disadvantaged children in North England. This project gave me access to oil paints and other materials as well as the space to experiment. This led on to an interest in formal training. I started a part time foundation course in Fine Art at the University of Northumbria. Graduating in 2000 from Central St Martins School of Art, London. I have exhibited throughout the UK and internationally.
Who or what are your key influences in your work?
The English Post-War painter Prunella Clough inspires me because she takes realistic views and pushes them into her own dreamlike landscapes. She was highly innovative and her distinctive style has been influential to me. In my early career, I was fascinated by Jackson Pollock. His layering process with oils on canvas slowly built depth and create images that are provoking. This technique I used to create imaginary images that were unplanned and spontaneous. It also captures time and motion from the densely splattered paint. Tell us about your latest series of work focusing on abstract dream landscapes?
My recent collection of paintings are from the period of 2011 to 2013. All
the images come under the title of Dream Landscapes. from my travels around the French Riviera, sometimes drawing or memorising a physical area or landscape I am fond of. These memories I then translate onto a canvas which then creates a dreamlike landscape. The pastel colours I use are reflected in the buildings and skies that can often be seen in Menton, Monaco, Beaulieu-sur-Mer and other villages in the Riviera. Where I live has a huge influence on how I work and what I paint.Foreign Places (2012) 100cm x 100cm by Kay Hare Can you expand on why memory is such an important aspect of your creative process?
Things remain in my memory more than others. It is probably their aesthetic value. Their colours... their calming influence. I do not hold on to to memoreies that hold negative emotions or do not inspire. A landscape that is aesthetically pleasing makes me want to create and to dream! It is the search for Utopia!Do you ever deal with nightmare visions or Dystopias? No. My reality is not dealing with negatoive landscapes. The subject of death does emerge in my work. A recent painting Jasmine Garden looks at the idea of the perfect, perfumed garden. But within this 'perfection' lies imperfection through a cemetery contained within the landscape. Death is not symbolically an ending but a channel into another realm. Another motif throughout my recent work is the use of birds to signify 'freedom' and 'rebirth'. Death in other cultures is an end to suffering and the start of a new spiritual beginning.Jasmine Garden (2012) 100cm x 100cm by Kay Hare What do you want your paintings to communicate to viewers?
I would like my paintings to inspire and uplift. Without having to pin
down exactly what they are, a bit like perfume. It's there, but you can’t
get a hold of it.What is your next project?
I am now working on a new book featuring sketches of Monaco and the surrounding area. The skteches will capture everyday scenes - not so much the big tourist landmarks. My belief is that there is pleasure in the mundane. I am hoping to exhibit the sketches in Monaco later in the year. To commission Kay Hare, contact kh[at]kayhare-art.com or visit her official website at www.kayhare-art.com

Top seed Djokovic defeated the eight-time defending champion and third seed 6-2, 7-6 (1) in one hour and 52 minutes. It broke Nadal's 46-match winning streak at the Monte-Carlo Country Club.
Djokovic has now won every Masters 1000 title barring Western and Southern Open in Cincinnati.
Following his victory, Novak Djokovic: "I rank this victory because of the very high significance that this tournament presents to me. I live here and spend a lot of time in this club. I mean, for me, it is the most beautiful club in the world because i love the view, I love the people. If somebody told me 10 days ago I'd be winning the trophy, I would not think it's so realistic, to be honest. But, you know, I went through pain, I went through a big challenge, mentally, physically, emotionally, and in the end it was getting better as the tournament was going on."Novak Djokovic reaches for glory at Monte-Carlo Country Club
Rafael Nadal said: "Hurt or not hurt, I do not know. I like to win more than lose, that is the goal in sport. It is not a tragedy. I lost after eight years without losing here. That's something. That's the more normal thing that can happen after all the success I have had here. But I need a little bit more physical performance."Rafael Nadal lost out on a ninth consecutive win at MonacoMonte-Carlo Rolex Masters 2013
Read more...

Running from 19 April to 31 May, the Gallery has invited Hamiltons of Mayfair, London to show nearly 30 photographs and prints from some of the world's top artists from the last century.
Hamiltons have brought a collection that reminds visitors of what nearly 200 years of traditional photography has contributed to art history. The exhibition also highlights how fast technology has advanced, rendering digital photography the new mainstream artform and photographers such as Helmut Newton or Richard Avedon as 'Old Masters' in their art.
Key works to look out for include:Richard Avedon's Stephanie Seymour, his controversial black-and-white portrait of one of the world's top supermodels at the height of her fame.

Rare Polaroid 'sketches' by Helmut Newton that show the creative process of some of his most famous works. These Polaroids today fetch up to 35,000 Euros at auction and show how both the traditional photographer and an extinct technology brand - once global giants - are today both memories of a past age.German-Australian Helmut Newton at work in his heyday
French fashion photographer Jeanloup Sieff's series of signed vintage prints, including classic scenes from Monte-Carlo and Paris.

Sem-Art Gallery is proud to welcome Hamiltons, one of the world's foremost galleries specialising in the modern masters of photography.
Hamiltons owner Tim Jefferies said: "Traditional photography will cease to exist as a practice in our lifetime. This is a tragedy as digital photograpy has never come close to capturing the beauty of traditionally made and printed photographs."Tim Jefferies: Looking at the future direction of art photography

Artist Dawn Dudek launches new art project fusing social media and painting
A new art project has launched in the French Riviera that combines fine art painting and digital technology.
Canadian-born artist Dawn Dudek has uploaded a series of 124 images to Pinterest. She has started to paint every image on canvas-paper as part of a project to encourage us all to think about how we store and use everyday images on our computers.Artist Dawn Dudek, in front of one of her earlier works
“We make choices when selecting and sharing images on social networking sites such as Pinterest. I thought about how these choices define us as individuals, and how this affects our perceptions of people and ourselves. I reviewed the many collected images I had posted online. When I saw them as a whole I became intrigued by the relationship they had to each other. I wanted to take this process a step further and decided the best way to explore these associations was to paint every picture pinned on my Pinterest board and assemble them. After all, if I love these images so much, why don’t I paint them?” said Dawn.
Pinterest is a social media platform, launched in 2010. It is a internet image board where users can post and curate their choice of digital images online. The free to use service has around 48 million users worldwide.
Traditional and digital art lovers can follow Dawn's progress on Pinterest and her website where the project titled If you love it so much why don’t you paint it has already begun to turn pixel into paint. Every individual painting is available to buy online

The artist has also come up with the novel idea of creating mini-Pinterest-style boards using her paintings. She will select and juxtapose her individual artworks to create new compositions called PinSets. Dawn discovered in the early stages of her project that even a small collection of random images could hold one or multiple unifying narratives when placed together.Example PinSet: What stories emerge from a series of random images?
The project raises interesting discussion on the power of the image, our interplay as curators of digital content and who we are relative to our images.
Dawn said: “The core of my Pinterest project is to look at all the images amassed as a collection and see how it affects the individual. As a visual artist, I have an affinity with single images and also what they say about me as a collective. When you see them as a mass, it’s like a visual self-portrait.”
Dawn is expected to complete all 124 paintings by early 2014 and she will show her work in an exhibition. Venue and more details on this to follow.
Julio Larraz - Marlborough Gallery Monaco

Exhibition of recent work from the Cuban artist
Marlborough Gallery Monaco presents the recent work of acclaimed Cuban artist Julio Larraz in a new show, opening on 25 April until 21 June 2013.
The solo exhibition brings together around 15 recent works, paintings and watercolors.
While Laraz's first 2002 exhibition in Monaco presented mostly large still-lifes, this exhibition focuses on his favorite themes featuring various characters and enigmatic landscapes. We find the same mysterious and seductive atmosphere which is the basis of all his work.Julio Larraz, Master Spy, 2011, oil on canvas, 72" x 60"

Stylistically, Larraz’s work may be characterized by simplicity of touch, dramatic lighting, sensuous colors, exaggerated scale, and a combination of reality and fantasy that is generally tropical in atmosphere. His subjects are often metaphors for such things as isolation, melancholy, the absurdity of power, or political intrigue.
Born in 1944 in Havana, Cuba, Larraz grew up in a home of cultural and intellectual distinction. His parents ran La Discusión, one of the oldest newspapers in Havana. His father had compiled one of the largest private libraries in the country comprising several hundred thousand volumes on painting, history, philosophy, and literature. When the family emigrated to Miami in 1961, this invaluable collection had to remain behind.
Larraz’s first exhibition was in 1971 at the Pyramid Gallery in Washington, DC. His first New York exhibition was at the Far Gallery in 1974. In 1975 he was awarded the Cintas Grant by the Instituto de Educación Internacional in New York and in 1976 the painting prize from the American Academy of Arts and Letters and National Institute of Arts and Letters in New York. He received in 1977 the Purchase Prize from the Childe Hassam Fund Purchase Exhibition, American Academy of Arts and Letters and National Institute of Arts and Letters. His paintings may be found in public collections and museums in Washington, DC, New York, Florida, Pennsylvania, Colombia, France, and Mexico.
Recent exhibitions include:Julio Larraz: Treinta años de trabajo: obra sobre papel, at the Museo de Arte Moderno de Bogotá, Bogota, Colombia; Museo de Arte Moderno, Mexico City, Mexico; Museo de Arte de Zapopan, Guadalajara, Mexico; Museo de Arte Costarricense, San Jose, Costa Rica, 2004Julio Larraz, Le Bellevue, Biarritz, France (in collaboration with Marlborough Gallery), 2008Julio Larraz, The Victorian Museum, Rome, Italy, 2012.

Marta Grigorieva - Portrait of a Riviera Artist

Profile of the Monaco-based fine art portrait painter
Marta Grigorieva is a Russian-born, now Monaco-based artist who specialises in painting fine art portraits. She has captured on canvas some of the world's top celebrities, Royals and high-profile people. Her work, beyond hanging in private collections, has also been exhibited worldwide, including Sothebys of New York, Sochi Art Museum and Harvard University. Can you give a little background as to your journey to become an artist? From the earliest age I can remember, I imagined and saw faces on the surfaces of people and animals. I started drawing aged six. After qualifying with a degree in Economics, I turned my focus to art. I worked in the 1990s at Christies auction house in New York and then returned to academia to study fine arts and art history at Harvard Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. I also took painting courses at the university. I went on to study with the artist Nelson Shanks at the Art Student League, perfecting figure and portrait painting for five years. After moving to Italy in 2001, I began to receive commissions to decorate public spaces with murals, interiors and exteriors of buildings. Many commissions and exhibitions followed. Today I paint full time.
Who or what are your key influences in your work?Nelson Shanks, my mentor at Arts Student League of New York - and the best portrait artist in America in my opinion. His method and technique are timeless; academic painting with impressionist colours. He has painted President Clinton among others. Other great artists inspire me. Those who painted with a distinct way of seeing light and colour, applying secret geometry within their art. Leonardo da Vinci, Rembrandt, Sargent, Matisse, Picasso, Lucien Freud to name a few.
You paint between your studio and clients' homes. Does this affect your work? The current portrait I am working on, commissioned by a Monaco family, is a life-size portrait of five people. The painting is being done in their villa in Cannes, where I am putting the final touches directly on to the canvas and the wall where it will be displayed. This young, beautiful family with three young daughters, alternate sittings for the portrait. I worked for the first two months on this portrait in my studio from photographs. The final 3 months has been in the family's house. It helps getting to know the personality of the sitters, observing how they interact as a family.
How do you capture so evocatively the 'life' of a subject onto canvas?Painting from life sittings helps to capture the moment in time; the essence and personality of the subject of a portrait. I always striving to convey a life-likeness and resemblance. And it helps to get to know my subjects before painting them.Princess Michael of Kent, Oil on canvas, 70cm x 50cm (2011)
Which subjects made your personal favourite paintings?I have enjoyed painting famous subjects such as Princess Michael of Kent, Nelson Mandela, and Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou. Stelios also commissioned me to paint Pavarotti and Frank Sinatra from their concert in New York. The painting hangs in his music room near a grand piano. I painted this work in Monaco in 2011 in a magnificent building overlooking the Metropol Hotel, the Casino, and the sea. That was very inspirational!Stelios Haji-Ioannou, Oil on canvas, 120cm x 90cm (2012)
Why do think the fine art portrait is still an important art form today? In Pre-Revolution Russia representatives of my family were among the oldest hereditary nobility. We had portraits in the family and it has always been a tradition. These portrait's are part of our history and remain for posterity. Portraiture is also in high demand in countries such as UK or France. There is a timeless element to most portraits. Paintings always tell a story and portraits reflect historical situations of their time.
You also teach children art in and around Monaco. Tell us about this aspect of your work.Art opens doors for so many creative professions. I teach children in Monaco and it's great satisfaction to be able to help children to find their unique direction in life. Helping to develop and nurture future generations of people who will shape our world. Fashion designers or graphic artists, fine artists, filmmakers - a variety of professions inspired by visual creative flair. Art is not simply decorative, but empowers commercial enterprise. It is my hope to develop an art school in Monaco, where children can become familiar in a playful way with important cultural elements of art history and painting. This, I believe, will make them more aware and prepare for the future success.Twin Sisters, Oil on canvas, 70cm x 50cm (2008)

Ringing the changes: Monaco returns as a boxing MeccaIn front of Prince Albert II, the undefeated WBA and IBO middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin was in blazing form in the Sporting Monte Carlo on Saturday night, destroying Nobuhiro Ishida’s ambitions with a clinical third-round knockout.
A straight right hand over the top caught Ishida high and instantly knocked him unconscious, marking a seventh successful title defence for the champion.
Asked who he might fight next, Golovkin was nonplussed: “It doesn’t matter.”Kazakhstan's Gennady Golovkin remained WBA world champion
Earlier, unbeaten super-middleweight Edwin Rodriguez ended the unbeaten run of Argentina’s Ezequiel Maderna in a tempestuous 10-rounder to advance to the final of the Million Dollar Super Four.

In the other Super Four semi-final, marginal favourite Denis Grachev inflicted a first ever defeat on former two-time world champion Zsolt Erdei, capturing a split decision (96-94, 96-94, 94-96).
Sergey Rabchenko was all business as he dispatched four-time Italian champion Adriano Nicchi in double-quick time, ending matters via TKO in the third. Ranked No 2 by the WBC, the Belarussian successfully defended his European light-middleweight crown.

Cruiserweight Ilunga Makabu endeared himself to the crowd through his power punching and ability to speak fluent French.
The Democratic Republic of Congo native walked down previously unbeaten Tamas Lodi, putting him down with a left-hook right-hook combination to end it at 1:21 in the third.

In the show opener, junior-welterweight Kiril Relikh scored a first round knockout against Paolo Gassani.

Following the success of the Monaco Optimist Team Racing Championship (11-13 January 2013), the Yacht Club de Monaco organised a weekend where two boats race against two boats, in J/24s and open to adults.

This first edition of the Monaco 2K Team Race was organised in collaboration with Bruce Hebbert, International Umpire, specialist in this discipline, which uses the team’s result rather than the individual boat’s result to decide the winner. Each team is composed of two crews of four members per boat with a minimum of three female sailors.

“Within our sports and educational programme for highly skilled sailors, we wish to support this racing format, which needs perfect knowledge of racing manoeuvres and rules. The format is paradoxically very easy to understand as it is the team with last place that loses. I would also like to take this opportunity to express our deepest appreciation to our society members, notably Joshua Warren and Ian Ilsley, who introduced this exciting new race format and more generally to all the volunteers who are involved in our Club’s life and race activities” commented Bernard d’Alessandri, Secretary General of the Yacht Club de Monaco.

Following the Round Robin raced over the first two days between the seven teams entered (representing 5 nations), the top three teams were clearly identified: The Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, the Serpentine and the Royal Thames Yacht Club.
Fourth place was bitterly contested, between the Dutch Match & Team Racing Association and the Yacht Club de Monaco, lead by the Rodelato Family, during the final phases on Sunday morning.
After getting a good start, the Monaco team managed to resist the Dutch attacks until the last downwind leg when the Dutch broke through to victory on the finish line.

In the semi finals, there was some memorable jousting between the top four teams. With the undefeated Italian team from YCCS emerging to meet the very talented young British team from the Royal Thames Yacht Club.

In the first race of the final, the British team came from behind to win the race, in the second race, the Italians dominated from the start, leaving the British with no tactical opportunities. All was left to be played for in the final race. Despite winning the start, the British found themselves heavily pressurised by the superb sailing of the Italians with numerous protests and position changes, the race was only finally decided as the teams approached the finish line with the British taking the line honours.

The Royal Thames Yacht Club team, lead by Andy Cornah, proved once again their perfect tactical mastery and team cohesion, all so necessary for this discipline.
Next YCM rendezvous: J/24 Monaco Championship, on 16 & 17 March, followed by the Smeralda 888 Challenge de Printemps, from 22 to 24 March 2013.

Monaco People: Marco Orsini

CityOut interviews the Monaco-based film director
Marco Orsini directed and starred in Dinner At The No-Gos, a round-the-world journey to meet and dine in the name of peace in some of America’s most feared territories, known as the “No-Gos”. CityOut asks, why so?Marco Orsini reveals all. Image: KaidiPhotography
Can we have a bit of background on you, Marco?
I was born in Puerto Rico, was educated on American Military bases in the Far East, went to University in the states and I've lived in Monaco since 2001.And your career in film and TV?Dinner At the No-Gos is my 5th film. Prior to film-making, I was a television creative producer for American and Latin American TV (WB, Sony, PAX, Disney, Telemundo, Univision). What interested you in the genre of documentary film-making?
I fell into it by accident. I was persuaded to direct a film called The Reluctant Traveler, a documentary that evolved into a film about my reluctance to film in Ethiopia, hence the title. There was an accident with the actress who was to narrate the film and I was left to be the face in front of camera. What resulted was a comedy – an unintentional comedy. This was when I realised I loved the format!Dinner at the No-Gos begins in Monaco, but what is Monaco’s connection to a film about US no-go territories?
Because I live in Monaco and knew enough ‘guinea pigs’ to test if the concept of dinner parties for peace could work. The Monaco parties proved we had something. Who came up with the idea to use dinner parties to soothe global conflict?
A girlfriend of mine. She thought after seeing The Reluctant Traveler, that I should go more places to film. She amongst others suggested the Middle East and that’s when the “No-Gos” idea arose. Were you again a “reluctant traveler”?
On the contrary. I was very excited. In Dinner At The No-Gos I was not a reluctant traveller at all. I fell in love with the Middle East because I fell in love with the people of the region. What do you feel was the impact of the film on the perceptions of the diners?
In the beginning, every party was a struggle and people were reluctant to talk. Every person was a struggle to get release forms signed. At the end of the dinners they were so excited and big supporters of the film and its vision. I am in touch still with most of the people who starred in the documentary. The Atlanta dinner party – of whom most of that party were my friends - saw the biggest change as they were the most the conservative with their perception of the Middle East. And what has audience reaction shown you?
I'm surprised at how mad Liberal American have become. They were feisty after the US screening of Dinner At the No-Gos! Many Americans have been aggressive with criticism. Best and worst dinner party from the film?
I personally enjoyed most the second Beirut dinner party. There was young kids unafraid to speak out… a real mixture of religions and backgrounds. A worst dinner party? How about the most tense! Tel Aviv was a bit tense, Atlanta was a bit tense. But thats what the films about. How much did alcohol influence or help the pursuit of world peace?
The title should have been Dinner At the No-Gos… Starring Dom Perignon! Any tips on hosting a dinner party for our readers?
Have drinks before dinner.. always! Never let people sit in the same position at the table too long. This gets boring. Try and cause a little controversy at the dinner party without insulting or embarrassing anyone!Your next project…?
My next film has me on location in Paris, London, Dublin, Munich, the South of France and even Monaco. I’ll leave it at that!
