The emblem of the Pink Ribbon is gaining ground across the world wherever supporters gather in the fight against breast cancer. Here in Monaco a number of new initiatives have been devised in support of the charity, the latest of which is Monaco's first ever Pink Ribbon walk in March. The Pink Ribbon Walk is a simple and effective community activity which testifies to the support for all those women whose lives are affected by cancer, at the same time visibly spreading awareness of the cause - and of course providing a great opportunity to get together with friends and enjoy a healthy day out. When a woman is afflicted with breast cancer, sons, husbands, fathers and brothers are also affected so it's just as crucial for men to participate in the walk as a sign of support and strength for the women in their lives. After a few days of early morning jogging and walking around the Principality, I found myself searching for some healing hands. Many massage treatments in Monaco can become prohibitively costly, especially if you like to indulge weekly, so you can imagine my delight when I found the fabulous Fabienne Pujalte. Fabienne developed her interest in natural medicine while studying at the Jacques LeCoq School of Acting, and after training in Paris with master Kunlin Zhan, obtained her certificate in Chinese traditional massage, a deep tissue therapy for men or women which releases tensions, working on the meridians and acupressure points through which the body's essential 'qi' or energy, flows. Her manner is delightful and her prices are by far the fairest of any I have encountered in Monaco so far. For part of the week you can find her on the beach at Cap d'Ail or, for a €20 additional fee, she will visit your home. She provides a full range of holistic treatments from traditional Tui Na massage to Reiki. An alternative is the basic Californian massage with long enveloping movements, or you can opt for a session of reflexology, where specific areas of the foot corresponding to organs and muscles in the body are gently massaged. This is one lady I know I will be seeing a lot of in the coming summer months!

The foundation Bariquand-Alphand, a medical and educational institute that welcomes mentally handicapped children and adolescents, is to be upgraded with a grant amounting to €8.3 million from provided by the Alpes-Martimes departement. This remarkable place was constructed in 1905 at the request of Ms. Marie-Jeanne Alphand (daughter of Jean-Charles Alphand, the engineer who worked alongside Hausmann to create the most beautiful gardens in Paris), to offer free treatment to the children of Menton. In 1925 the building was left to the Alpes-Maritimes. In 1947 it was re-equipped by the Medical Department of the US Army and specialized in sunlight-and-sea therapy. Twenty years later, the Mayor of Menton opened a medical-educational institute for children fom 6 to 16 years. And in 1988 the facility became one of the departement's public institutions. The Institute Bariquand-Alphand can take up to 80 children from 3 to 20 years living in the region -including Monaco - on a boarding or half-boarding basis. Its education department offers special needs teaching, and for older children an introduction to professional training, carried out by memners of the sixty-strong specially trained staff.

The 'House of Life' is a project to provide a refuge for patients undergoing long-term treatment for AIDS.  In this pleasant environment they will be able to recuperate in the company of their families, and no longer feel excluded from society. Behind the project is the charity Fight Aids Monaco, headed by HSH Princesse Stéphanie, who says that it essential to change people's attitudes and outlook on the victims of this terrible condition. Each year she organizes a private sale of art works by notable artists. This year's auction, which took place on World AIDS Day, 1 December, raised some €250,000 for the House of Life, which will formally open its doors in 2010. A large variety of sculptures, paintings and photographs went under the hammer of Maître Stéphane Aubert, auctioneer of Paris-based Artcurial, with bids beginning at €300.  Many lots went for well over their estimates, and the word 'Sold!' rang through the auction room for a good three hours.
