One of the most striking additions to the Monaco skyline in recent years is the Ni Club, next door to the Auditorium Rainier III. The stunningly-designed space fits perfectly into Monaco's marina architecture, with sweeping curved surfaces and giant portholes calling to mind the many superyachts which berth here throughout the year. Inside you'll find a sea-front club dedicated to music and dance. Fridays and Saturdays the Night Club comes into its own, with a great line up of DJs, both visiting and local.

What: Crêpes Suzette
Where: Café de Paris
When: Wednesday and Thursday evenings until 29 March 2012
Crêpes Suzette are so associated with France and French cuisine that it is a surprise to learn that they were developed in Monte Carlo. In fact the very first Crêpe Suzette was produced by accident when a chafing dish caught fire in the kitchens of the Café de Paris and caramelized the fine champagne within.
The resulting sauce was found so delicious by the future king Edward VII that he demanded to see the chef, 14-year-old Henri Charpentier, and asked him what it was called. With the utmost sangfroid the boy replied that the pancakes were to be named 'Crêpes Prince de Galles', but the Prince insisted instead on honouring his dining companion, an attractive Parisienne named Suzette.

In Charpentier's autobiography Life a la Henri, he explains 'It was quite by accident as I worked in front of a chafing dish that the cordials caught fire. I thought it was ruined. The Prince and his friends were waiting. How could I begin all over? I tasted it. It was, I thought, the most delicious melody of sweet flavors I had ever tasted. I still think so. That accident of the flame was precisely what was needed to bring all those various instruments into one harmony of taste . . . He ate the pancakes with a fork; but he used a spoon to capture the remaining syrup.'
The prince honoured Charpentier by sending him a panama hat, a cane and a jewelled ring. And the accidental dessert - which Charpentier himself said would civilize even a cannibal - passed into culinary history...
Now you can sample Henri's special dish every Wednesday and Thursday evening at the Café de Paris, where it all began, throughout the winter and right up to the end of March. Doesn't it warm the cockles of your heart just to think of it?

Where: Monte Carlo Story, Terrasses du Parking du Chemin des Pêcheurs
When: 6.30pm, Tuesday 7 February 2012
(below the Oceanographic Museum)
Entrance: €40 (€20 for under-16s)
'Boy' is a coming-of-age tale about heroes and the power of magic, set in and filmed on the rural east coast of New Zealand. Nominated for the Grand Jury Prize at the 2010 Sundance Festival, this exceptional movie has also won - among other prizes - the Deutsches Kinderhilfswerk Grand Prix at the Berlin
Film Festival, Audience Awards at both Sydney and Melbourne, and
Best Dramatic Feature at the Toronto ImagineNative Film Festival.
Set in the remote Waihau Bay of North Island, the film is the story of eleven-year-old Boy, who has grown up on smallholding under the protective eye of his grandmother. His absent father, Alamein, appears to his childish imagination as a cross between a deep-sea diver and war hero: he even dances like his pop idol, Michael Jackson, so he must be related in some way, right? But when his dad turns up unexpectedly after seven years, Boy is forced to confront the difficult truth that reality might be something quite different.
On the evening of 7 February, its director Taika Waititi - nominated for an Oscar for his earlier short film 'Two Cars, One Night' - is coming to Monaco to presents his celebrated movie at a special dinatoire, screening and question-and-answer session. It's an initiative hosted by IEFTA, the International Emerging Film Talent Association, a fantastic
project which identifies and supports film-related creativity in
developing countries around the world.
Tickets are €40, with a 50% concession for children under 16 years old, and all funds will go to support IEFTA's continuing project with the Ethiopia Film School in Addis Ababa.
The Silence - a fiction

Where: Villa Paloma, New National Museum of Monaco
When: 10am to 6pm daily, February to April
Tickets: €6.00

Imagine you were an archaeologist or historian from another planet looking back at human existence from some point in the far distant future. What would signs might we have left behind? What evidence would remain of our one-time great civilizations? Would there be anything left? Or would there be just a wasteland?
That was the brief for a new exhibition of photographs, videos and installations by twenty-five international artists invited to exhibit their work at the New National Museum of Monaco's Villa Paloma from February to April. Photo © C. Gallo - Centre de PresseThe Silence - A Fiction gathers together a body of contemporary artworks - from Arman's 'Accumulations' to the images of Hiroshi
Sugimoto - to paint a picture of a world familiar yet foreign. In the space between science and fiction, the new exhibition invites the
visitor on a journey of enormous imaginative power. Curator Simone Menegoi believes that the exhibition offers a 'fantastic
account, a form of narrative décor which tells the story of a planet that has become uninhabitable for reasons unknown'.
These are landscapes - but not as we know them. Landscapes formed and re-formed by environmental disaster and economic collapse. Some, like the sculptures of the young American artist Michael E. Smith - are disturbing in their ordinariness. He specializes in putting together everyday items of waste collected in the urban desert of his home city, Detroit; his 'fossils' of our consumer culture present the viewer with a strong sense of a world completely abandoned.
Most apocalyptic is the work of Adrien Missika, whose journey to the gas-filled crater known as the 'Gateway to Hell' in central Turkmenistan is the subject of his video projection called Darvaza, which forms a major part of the narrative of this new exhibition.
The exhibition is accompanied by an illustrated catalogue, but also, unusually, by a work of fiction specially written by author Chris Sharp. List of artists

Located in the art deco Sporting d'Hiver building in the Place du Casino, the Cinema Sporting is Monaco's premier venue for the latest films in French plus a selection of movies screened in their original language.
This week: Oscar nominee The ArtistWith no fewer than ten Oscar nominations, Michel Hazanavicius's hommage to the silent movie, The Artist, is one of the two frontrunners in this year's competition. Although we're told that the version showing in Monaco is the French edition, that really doesn't matter in a film which itself contains no spoken dialogue - on top of which it's worth going to see for the performance of Jean Dujardin (tipped for the best actor award) and his co-star, French-Argentinian actress Berenice Bejo, alone.
Also showing this week are J. Edgar, directed by Clint Eastwood and starring Leonardo DiCaprio as J. Edgar
Hoover, feared and admired as the face of law enforcement in America for almost 50 years; A Dangerous Method, based on Christopher Hampton's stage play about the relationship between Jung and Freud; and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, the new film version of Stieg Larsson's bestselling Millennium thriller - also nominated for five Oscars, including Best Actress.

The Mediterranean - a living world?

Last chance to see the Oceanographic Museum's excellent exhibition
What: Méditerranée: Splendide, Fragile, Vivante
Where: Monaco Oceanographic Museum
When: daily, 10am to 6pm, from now until 21 March 2012
Entry: €14 (€7)

For the last eighteen months, a giant octopus, measuring 25 metres from tentacle to tentacle, has been greeting visitors to Monaco's Oceanographic Museum. Commissioned from Chinese artist Huang Yong Ping, the great sea creature has been strung up over the entrance to a fantastic exhibition on the subject of the extraordinary biodiversity of the Mediterranean Sea.
The Octopus - minus its tentacles - goes up at the Musée Oceanographique
...and it's up!
But despite this sensational welcome, the purpose of the exhibition is far more serious. The Med, it seems, is dying. And it's up to every one of us to try to halt its inevitable decline before it becomes an overheated swamp, filled not with giant octopuses - but certainly with a super-abundance of jellyfish.
Living 'au bord de la mer', it's easy to take the Mediterranean for granted. But when you stop to consider our relationship with that vast body of water, perhaps it's time to focus again on its role and future.
Known in ancient times simply as 'The Great Sea', the Med is exactly that, covering nearly a million square miles, and whether you see it as the cradle of civilizations, the major trading route between Europe, Africa and Asia, a historically plentiful supplier of seafood, or the tourist attraction par excellence, there's no question of the power it has exerted over us since the beginning of human existence.

The twentieth century, however, has revealed how surprisingly fragile such vast ecostructures can be, and this newexhibition at Monaco's Oceanographic Museum focuses on four areas which show just how vulnerable the sea now is: three of them concerning acidification of the ocean, the invasion of non-indigenous species, and overfishing.
The fourth (without wanting to deter thousands of summer beach-lovers) is the huge proliferation of jellyfish, which have replaced less robust creatures as warmer waters and changing ecology have caused indigenous species including fish to die out. The Oceanographic Museum of Monaco has chosen to illustrate the proliferation of jellyfish with a ballet of aurelia aurita in a tank designed especially for the occasion.
The exhibition, which coincides with the publication of a lavishly illustrated 175-page book (above), is open until March 2012. Its aim is to reach out to its audience and provide ideas for getting involved with simple actions to preserve the Mediterranean sea as a living, life-enhancing environment.

Imagining the virtual future

Where: Grimaldi Forum
When: 7 to 9 February 2012
If you work in architecture, mapmaking, engineering or interior design, you use it daily. If you've trained as a pilot, you've used it. If you regularly play video games, you've used it. Pixar have made an industry of it with their internationally celebrated cartoons such as Toy Story, Ratatouille and Up. Without it, Avatar, the world's most expensive film - and one of the highest-grossing movies of all time - could never have been made.
It's difficult to imagine today's world without 3D graphics technology. From the simplest wire-mesh objects to the images we finally see on our screens, the process of rendering virtual objects is extending its reach daily. And you no longer need a degree to interact with it in very sophisticated ways. Programmes such as Second Life allow easy templates for ordinary mortals to design and build 3D people, places and objects, whether reproductions of the real world, or imaginative fantasies.
How can digital technologies improve the eco-design of buildings? How
might augmented reality and similar immersive technologies transform
whole sectors of the economy and society? Answers to questions such as
these will be provided by this year's Imagina 3D Simulation and Virtual Technology show, which has been
held annually since 1981. As usual, the event takes place this year in the appropriately hi-tech setting of Monaco's Grimaldi Forum.
Watch the video below to get a glimpse of last year's Imagina:Last year's conference reviewed by Euronews
Europe's leading techno-fair, which takes place in the Grimaldi Forum, acts as a showcase for the latest developments, a meeting-place for major players, and a platform for discussion on every aspect of simulated worlds. This year's event will welcome nearly 50 exhibitors, as well as representatives of some 500 international companies.
The event is also the occasion for the presentation of awards spanning several key categories of technological development. Below is one of last year's prizewinners, Joel Pourgaton of Disney Enterprises, being presented with the emblematic award by HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco:

You only have to glance at the self-adjusting centre badges on the 20'' alloy wheels to fall in love instantly with Bentley's latest offering.
The Continental's instantly recognizable black mesh grille and bullish front end give an impressive hint of the power to be found below deck. The fruit of four years' research and development, the car's magnificent 500bhp V8 engine powers this sleek new coupe to 60 mph in just 4.6 seconds. Add to that the extraordinary eight-speed transmission, and your trip to Monaco becomes a financial as well as an aesthetic pleasure: with a combined urban/cruising performance of 26.7 mpg, it's possible to drive for over 500 miles before filling up. Bentley Continental GT Coupe (21" wheels option)
Moreover, the latest electronics manage a variable displacement system that automatically switches the engine between V4 and V8 modes representing a further saving. This feature, together with built-in energy recuperation technology, makes the V8 GT greatly more efficient than previous models.
Inside, the Continental is a strikingly-designed and inspiring coupe, whose Eucalyptus-wood trim and prime-grade soft leather furnishings provide exactly the touch of luxury demanded by its occupants. The touchscreen infotainment layout incorporates navigation, wireless phone and monitoring systems, while the 8-channel audio system provides perfectly-balanced radio, CD and DVD audio. With plenty of storage space and even more legroom for rear passengers, it's clear that the Continental is a car designed for extreme comfort on longer journeys.
But the highlight for Riviera cruising is without doubt the convertible's four-layer insulated hood, easily and quickly stowed at the press of a button. And for those who relish the thought of top-down motoring in cooler weather, there's even a three-speed neck-warmer, massage and seat ventilation option, so you can combine all the benefits of fresh air and interior comfort.
The V8 GT and GTC are already garnering hugely favourable reviews in the motoring press. If you're looking for a way to arrive in Casino Square in style in 2012, you don't have to look much further.

People who make Monaco: Mimoza Koike

Mimoza Koike takes time out from her work with the Ballets de Monte Carlo for our exclusive interview
Born in 1982 in Tokyo, Japan, Mimoza Koike studied at the Conservatoire National Superieure of Music and Dance in Lyon, where she was introduced to the choreography of Balanchine and Nureyev. From 2001 to 2003, Mimoza danced an extensive repertoire with the Ballet du Grand Théâtre of Geneva, before moving to Monaco to join the Ballets de Monte Carlo under Jean-Christophe Maillot. You were born in Japan, a country with a great dance tradition of its own - I'm thinking specifically of Kabuki. As a dancer, how influential has that culture been?
I always go see Kabuki theatre every year, each time I am in Japan. As a professional dancer in European dance groups - including the Ballets de Monte Carlo - it's very important for me when I think of bringing life to my own characters. Central to Kabuki is attention to detail, whether in terms of eye movement, the direction of a particular look, hand movement, or pauses. These essentials from my own culture I try to integrate to my European dance environment, in order to find my inner self. You currently dance with the Ballets de Monte Carlo, which grew out of Monaco's association with Serge Diaghilev, founder of the Ballets Russes. How important would you say is the legacy of Diaghilev to modern dance? Is his spirit still alive in Nice and Monaco?
Two years ago, we celebrated the 100th anniversary of Diaghilev's Ballets Russes in Monaco, and had a chance to study the history of the company and its spirit once again. As part of that season I took on a role in a new arrangement of Stravinsky's opera 'Rossignol' (The Nightingale), and was able to build something of the original, historical spirit of the piece into the new arrangement. It was such a meaningful experience for me - nothing I learned at school prepared me for it! And that spirit is still alive with us through the work of Jean-Christophe Maillot. Another legacy of Diaghilev is collaboration with artists: just as he collaborated with Picasso, so now I appreciate the many projects we undertake in co-operation with various artists.
You've danced many principal roles in Monte Carlo, among them the Fairy Godmother in Cinderella, Titania in Jean-Christophe Maillot's re-worked Midsummer Night's Dream, and the Queen in his version of Swan Lake. Of all your roles, which has been the most ambitious or technically difficult one, and which have you enjoyed the most?
It is so difficult to answer - each role is so different, but I suppose I love acting especially those characters which are dissimilar to me. For example my first main role was as Margarita in Faust. She's a very shy person - not like me at all! If I had to choose a role, maybe Cinderella, but in the end, I can't really choose one over another.Tell us about your recent projects: '2 pieces +2', and your work with 'Logoscope'. What are you working on at the moment?
I created '2 pieces+2' with one other choreographer from Monaco and two choreographers from Berlin, and we performed in both cities - it was a great pleasure to partake in that and show them my work. 'Logoscope' is a very special project with Agnès Roux, who I have always admired as an artist. I love participating in art projects like this - they really stimulate the spirit. Recently, I've also been working with young scenography students at the Ecole Supérieure d'Arts Plastiques in Monaco's Pavillon Bosio (it's the fourth such project between the Ballets de Monte Carlo and this school); and every year I teach kids at a variety of Japanese dance schools. I enjoy the opportunity to support the future of young people and I'd like to do more of this kind of work. It's always helpful for me to expand my horizons!
I have never looked myself as a choreographer, but it's an important part of my own professional growth as a dancer. As far as my own choreography goes, I'm very influenced by the culture of the cities I travel to. Every time I go somewhere new, I tend to make a video with other dancers or friends performing in front of a typical location. Finally, how would you rate the current popularity and public contribution of dance and related multimedia as a means of expression, both in Monaco and worldwide? What is the best way for people to get involved as viewers or performers?
It is difficult to say, being on the inside. But I think it's important to develop a wider audience. Ballet and dance tend to attract only a limited part of a population. I hope we can expand the type of audiences who come to see us dance. Specifically with Jean-Christophe Maillot I am engaged with modern dance, and I believe that we have a lot more room to develop the popularity of this dance form for different generations.

Where: Valence and Monaco
Web: www.acm.mcRallying season returns to Monte CarloCLICK HERE FOR LATEST RESULTS
This week sees the 80th Monte Carlo Rally (17-22 January), followed by its counterpart the 15th Rallye Historique (28 Jan-4 Feb)
The Monte Carlo Rally is generally considered to be one of the most prestigious - and demanding - of all motor races. Stretching over 1300 kilometres, 430 of which are in special timed stages, the rally - which this year once more forms part of the World Rally Championship - is one of the most thrilling events of the sporting year.
One of its most spectacular and notorious stages, from La Bollène-Vésubie to Sospel, takes place on a steep mountain road with multiple hairpin bends, passing over the usually icebound Col de Turini, which has been the scene of not a few dramatic incidents and hairsbreadth escapes over the hundred years in which the race has been run.Bryan Bouffier and Xavier Panseri receive the 2011 trophy from Prince Albert I
The world-famous rally was first run in 1911 under the patronage of Prince Albert I, great-grandfather of the present prince of Monaco, with the aim of attracting visitors to the Principality, as well as giving car manufacturers the opportunity of testing new technologies.
Financed by the Société des Bains de Mer, the original rally was organized (as it still is 101 years later) by the Automobile Club of Monaco. The club’s founding president Alexandre Noghès - whose son Antony would later emulate his father by setting up the Monaco Grand Prix - had come up with the idea of a motor race run in the winter months.
Given the region’s narrow mountain roads, cliffs with sheer drops of hundreds of feet, as well as snow and ice, this was to be a real test. But the format proved an enormous success – and the race has been run in January ever since. For more about the history of the race, please see this article from last year's CityOut

A Young Explorer from Monaco

Fifteen-year-old Alexander Minder tells us of his ambition to join a unique trip to the Amazon
Alexander Minder, a student at the International School of Monaco, has been selected for the Young Explorers Program created by world famous adventure explorer and environmentalist Mike Horn. If he successfully completes a ten-day training camp in the Swiss Alps, Alexander and eight other young explorers will join Mike on an exploratory voyage down the Amazon River to publicize ecological concerns there. In this article, he tells us the story of how he was bitten by the exploring bug.I was 11 years old the day the boat pulled into the Monaco Harbor and docked directly in front of my school. A sailboat, double-hulled and rugged, that looked somewhat out of place among the gleaming yachts and chic Rivas usually berthed in Monaco's maritime valet parking. It was as if someone had pulled up a 4x4 between the Lamborghinis in the Casino square.
The vessel? The 115–ft. Pangaea. The helmsman? Mike Horn: world-renowned adventurer, modern pioneer, and ambassador of mother earth.
Mike came to Monaco to launch his Young Explorers Program (YEP) in a principality dedicated to protecting the environment. I was a young sailor on the Monaco Yacht Club’s Optimist team, who thought the earth’s resources were as limitless as the seas I sailed.
I have to admit I didn’t know of Mike that day. But along with the rest of my class from the International School of Monaco, I went to visit the boat – one of the coolest I have ever seen. I went back later that afternoon with my family, and I met a man who picked me up in one arm and one of my brothers in the other. Mike Horn, who told me that the name Pangaea meant ‘one world’ and that ‘what we dream we can do!’ It was advice I took to heart and which has changed my life.Alexander and his two brothers, Andrew and Anthony, meet Mike Horn in 2008
I dreamed, from that very minute, of joining Mike Horn’s Young Explorers Program and travelling on an expedition with him to help save the planet. I started learning everything I could about this real life ‘superman’ I had the incredible opportunity to meet. I read his books and began following him on Facebook. It also inspired me to volunteer for Monacology, an organization under the patronage of His Serene Highness Prince Albert II of Monaco - dedicated to increasing awareness and public education for the environment. It is another wonderful channel through which I hope to communicate the YEP message of 'Explore, Learn & Act'.The Pangaea at Port Hercule
Over the past four years, I followed all the YEP expeditions, which circumnavigated the entire earth, with great interest and not a little bit of envy – always wondering if I could make it. I worried that due to my young age I might not get the opportunity. I wanted so badly to join the amazing people whose adventures I followed and whose leader I so admired. But as the YEP is intended for young adults between the ages of 15 and 20, I didn’t know if I would have the chance.
Fortunately, I turned 15 this past November, just in time to apply for the Amazon expedition – the eleveth out of the total twelve planned. To apply, I had to create a video and I decided to use my sailing experience, acquired over the past nine years at the Monaco Yacht Club. After all, Mike Horn came to Monaco to christen the amazing Pangaea – a great choice as Prince Albert and our principality are dedicated to protecting the environment. In fact, it was Mike Horn who led the Prince on his expedition to Antarctica in January 2009!HSH Prince Albert and Mike Horn at the christening of Pangaea in May 2008
Soon it is my turn. I leave for the Mike Horn selection camp in Chateau d’Oex, Switzerland on the 30th of January, the day after I get back from representing my school at the Model United Nations conference in The Hague. It's a busy month, as in between I need to find time to study for my exams and also get into shape for what is guaranteed to be an intensive training experience. Only half of the eighteen Young Explorers selected for the camp will make it to the Amazon aboard Pangaea. I dream of being one of them. As none other than Mike Horn himself told me: 'What we dream, we can do!'Find out more

When: Saturday, 2 July 2011 from 6.30 pm
Admission: Free
On the evening of the pubic wedding ceremony, Prince Albert and Princess Charlene will process to the church of Monaco's patron saint, St Dévote, where the Princess will lay her wedding bouquet as a symbolic gesture of her union with the Monégasque people.
The placing of a bouquet is an ancient tradition for brides, and Princess Charlene will be following literally in the footsteps of Princess Grace, who laid her own bouquet, of lily-of-the-valley, on the altar of the Chapel of Sainte Dévote after her 1956
wedding.
The good news for those members of the public unable to attend the
ceremony itself is that they will be able to congratulate the Princely
couple as they make their way along the processional route.
The procession will take in Avenue de la Porte-Neuve, Avenue du Port and Boulevard Albert I, returning to the Palace by the same route. Giant screens will be set up in the Principality in order to allow as many people to follow the religious ceremony and the couple en route.

Where: Valence and Monaco
When: 28 January to 4 February
Web: www.acm.mc
No sooner is the Monte Carlo Rally done and dusted than it's time once more for the Rallye Monte-Carlo Historique, which this year celebrates its fifteenth anniversary. From Saturday 28 January until Saturday 4 February, competitors from all over Europe will congregate in and around Monaco to test their driving skills on some of the most challenging routes anywhere in the world.
But before that, of course, they'll have to get here - and that's not always as simple as it sounds in cars which, according to the rules, must be manufactured between 1955 and 1980! About 300 teams will be starting off a day or two before the from a number of cities which helped to forge
the reputation of the Rallye Monte-Carlo: Barcelona, Glasgow, Oslo,
Reims, Turin and Warsaw.
The first competitors to set off on this 15th historic rally will leave
from Oslo on the morning of Sunday 29th January 2012 followed by
those from Warsaw and Glasgow respectively. Teams from Barcelona, Turin and Reims set off the next day. All meet on Tuesday 31 January.
Among the notable cars to look out for this year are the Lancia Fulvia HF of Sandro Munari (who will be celebrating the 40th anniversary of his 1972 victory in the Monte Carlo Rally), three Renault R5 Alpines, and three historic Citroens - including a red and pink 1969 ID 20 driven by Christine Dacremont and Françoise Conconi. Also taking part will be Danish driver Lars Baekkelund in a Fiat 128, Claude Laurent in a Citroen GS and local driver Patrick Magaud in a Volkswagen Golf.
In addition to the major European makes, there will also be a range of
East European names, among them Gaz, Moskvitch, Skoda, Trabant and Zastava. The oldest car to take part, starting from Glasgow, is a 1950
Allard, celebrating the 60th anniversary of its 1952 Monte Carlo
victory.ProgrammeOn 1 February drivers and navigators set off from Monaco to Valence, capital of the Drôme region, for the classification leg. On Thursday a 318km circuit takes place from and to Valence, and on Friday a longer leg of 414km sees the teams make their way back to Monaco before a final 404 km-long circuit of Monaco on the final night of competition.

Where: Eden Star, 32 quai Jean Charles Rey, and at the Port Palace hotel
Web: http://www.danieledewinter.com
Nowadays we think nothing about keeping healthy, and holistic treatments including diet and spa therapies are seen as normal, rather than niche, activities. It was not always so. A quarter of a century ago, Jan de Winter was unusual in promoting healthy living as a way of preventing cancer. Realizing that conventional treatments were not the answer to this disease, Dr de Winter spent his life teaching people how to avoid cancer by changing their lifestyles and looking after their health. And ever since establishing the UK's first Cancer Prevention and Health Optimization Clinic in 1986, his research has proved invaluable to health authorities and governments worldwide.
It was Dr de Winter who encouraged his then fifteen-year-old daughter Daniele to write 'What the Doctor Ordered', a simple food guide whose aim was to make healthy eating more tempting and less of an inconvenience. An international success, it was followed six years later by Daniele’s companion volume, the bestselling 'Eat Yourself Beautiful'.Now living on the French Riviera, Daniele de Winter has become in her own right one of the most respected names in the field of anti-aging therapies. Her Monaco-based company, launched in 2006 in the presence of Prince Albert, has pioneered a unique system, INSIDEOUT beauty™, which combines delicious health drinks with highly effective skin treatments. The secret, we're told, is the proprietary blend of enzymes, antioxidants, and amino acids that work deep within the dermis to encourage tissue regeneration.
The resulting improvement in skin density, elasticity and hydration produces not only a healthier skin but that deep and long-lasting youthfulness and beauty much in demand among Daniele de Winter's fans, who include actresses Ornella Muti, Margherita Buy and Catherine
Deneuve, pop stars Nathalie and Nicole Appleton and models Alexandra
Kamp and India Waters.
In addition to their presence in Monaco, Daniele de Winter products are now to be found at a host of glittering events such as the Oscars, the Emmys, and the Cannes and Venice
Film festivals.
Daniele has always believed the spa to be the ideal environment in which to seduce a
customer towards a healthier, more beautiful way of living, Luxury hotels across the world - including the Mandarin Oriental, Four Seasons and Kempinski groups - have long used de Winter beauty products as an integral part of their spa treatments, and it's no surprise that this year de Winter have opened their own spa.
Located in Cannes, just behind the Croisette, the luxurious venue offers clients a '360 degree' beauty experience where they can receive bespoke anti-aging advice, a consultation with one of the Côte d’Azur’s most respected cosmetic doctors, rejuvenating facials, relaxing or slimming body treatments and even a total makeover by a celebrity make-up artist. 'Our mission', Daniele tells us, 'is to help every woman we meet feel and look absolutely fabulous'. The new Daniele de Winter Spa in Cannes
'INSIDEOUT beauty - being beautiful without Botox', is available via the De Winter website at http://www.danieledewinter.com
Read more...

Web: http://www.montblanc-tribute-to-grace.com/en/Grace Kelly was a remarkable woman. The Oscar-winning star of some of Hollywood's best-loved films, her marriage to Prince Rainier raised her to a near-iconic status as one of the world's most beautiful women, celebrated as much for her kindness and instinctive compassion as for her looks.
The news of her untimely death in 1982 was met with shock and sadness both in Monaco and in her home country of the United States.
Now, thirty years later, luxury jewellers and pen-makers Montblanc have decided to honour the memory of Princess Grace with a special limited edition which will also continue her legacy by contributing to the artistic charity she founded, the Princess Grace Foundation-USA.
Only three unique jewellery sets, eight timepieces and three writing instruments have been manufactured, ensuring that these highly desirable objets d'art - described as 'feminine and timelessly elegant' - will appreciate in value long into the future. The central motifs of the collection are the Grace de Monaco Rose (the flower created in 1956 for Grace's wedding to Prince Rainier) and the princess's monogram, which appears on the case-backs of the watches, and on the cap-tops of the pens.
The jewellery set includes a necklace of pink sapphires and diamonds, earrings culminating in drop-cut pink sapphires and a matching bracelet. The watch has an elegant mother-of-pearl face set in an 18-ct pink gold case encrusted with over 250 diamonds and, like the jewellery set, combined with drop-cut pink sapphire. A Montblanc Diamond in the crown is the finishing touch.
Limited-edition writing instruments
The solid pale-gold fountain pen is an exquisite example of Montblanc's traditional craft, set off with lozenge-cut diamonds and rubies on the cap and barrel to represent the coat of arms of Monaco. The feminine modelling of the diamond clip reflects the elegance and beauty of Princess Grace, while additional elements are rendered in iridescent mother-of-pearl.
A further twenty-nine pens, in a rose lacquer and bearing the princess's monogram on cap and barrel, commemorate 1929, the year of Grace Kelly's birth in Philadelphia. These pens also have detailing in mother-of-pearl and are embellished with a beautiful drop-cut pink sapphire.
Finally comes a one-off special edition pen in deep purple resin, its gold-plated cap and barrel rings engraved with the traditional lozenges of Monaco and featuring a clip with a drop-cut pink topaz.
Montblanc invited 350 VIP guests from around the world to attend the spectacular international premiere of the Princess Grace Collection in Monaco on 8 September 2011.The collection is currently travelling around the world to be previewed in 23 Montblanc boutiques in Asia, Europe, North and Central America.
The Princess Grace Foundation-USA
The Princess Grace Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to assisting emerging talent in theatre, dance and film by awarding grants through the Princess Grace Awards programme. Roll up! roll up! for the 36th International Circus Festival of Monte Carlo. From 19th to 29th January 2012, circus-lovers will be gathering together in the Principality to celebrate one of the most dynamic programmes of recent years, including an unrivalled programme of awe-inspiring new routines.
Two outstanding acts from France are preparing to re-write the definition of daredevilry. Infernal Varanne is an astonishing motorcycle act featuring no fewer than six world-record-breaking performers simultaneously chasing around the interior of a 3.5-metre metal globe. Meanwhile the Pilar Duo provide similar thrills on roller skates, with an unforgettable and breathtaking elevated dance routine.
The Strong Men of Mongolia will perform a juggling act using metal balls, each weighing over 20 kilos, accompanied by a team of floor acrobats; and last but not least, there will also be the traditional opportunity to see some of the world's finest and most majestic animals.
Goncharov, the Ukrainian lion-tamer who has fought consistently to improve the living conditions of circus animals, will be presenting his remarkable troupe of ten lions - including eight males - in a skilfully choreographed programme. And in a new twist on the tradition, the Probst, from Germany, perform a country-style act featuring farm animals: donkeys, goats, pigs and cockerels will be having a field day in Fontvieille’s famous ring. A second act will feature 21 ponies, a world first: never before have so many of these famously untameable creatures appeared together in a circus ring.Even more to come!
Sainte Dévote's Day

The annual feast day of Monaco's patron saint takes place towards the end of January
What: Sainte Dévote's Day
When: Thursday 26 January 2012 and Friday 27 January 2012Ceremonial boat burning Thursday from 6.30 pm at Place Ste DévoteThe end of January sees one of the great occasions in Monaco – the annual commemoration of the the principality’s patron, Sainte Dévote
Visitors arriving at Monaco Train Station and taking the lift down to
the port emerge into a gorge at the bottom of which is a small church
facing the harbour. It is dedicated to Sainte Dévote, and it is the
scene of an annual boat-burning ceremony attended by the Royal family.
But who was the saint, and what was her connection with Monaco?
Who was Sainte Dévote?
A fourth-century native of Corsica, Sainte Dévote had challenged the authority of the cruel governor Barbarus, who had her put to death on the rack. But at
the moment of her greatest suffering, a dove flew from her mouth and a
voice spoke from heaven: 'My servant, your prayer has been answered.
What you have asked for or wished for, you will obtain'.Witnesses to her cruel death had her body embalmed and transferred in
secret by boat, but poor weather and a leaking vessel caused the ship
to run aground where Port Hercule now is, on 27 January 312 AD. Within a
short space of time, she had been declared the patron saint of Monaco.
But that wasn't the end of the intriguing story. It is said that some of the remains of the saint were stolen by fishermen local fishermen. An angry mob in turn set the thieves’ vessel on fire. Since 1874, a fishing boat has been symbolically burnt in memory not just of
the saint but of the recovery of her remains. A white dove is also released, symbolizing the spirit of the young
martyr.

Royal occasion
The morning after the traditional burning of the boat in the presence of the royal family, a procession begins in which the Saint’s
relics are displayed in a special jewelled casket. Relics, or the remains of dead saints, have for a long time formed part of Catholic tradition: venerating them is thought to bring about benefits including miraculous healings

Kept for most of the year in the little church at the bottom of the gorge of Ste Dévote (further remains are kept in the Chapel of Mercy on the Rocher itself) these articles are paraded each year in solemn procession to the cathedral of Monaco, to be blessed and to act as the focus for an act of prayer on behalf of the principality.
Programme of eventsThursday 26 January
9.30am Traditional Mass in l'Eglise Sainte Devote.
6.30pm the barque arrives at Port Hercule followed by a procession along Avenue President J F Kennedy.
7.00pm Parvis de Ste Dévote: the boat is burnt in the presence of the royal family
7.45pm Fireworks

Friday 27 January
9.45am. Welcoming of the saint's relics by the clergy of Monaco Cathedral and the Venerable Archiconfrérie de la Miséricorde.
10am Pontifical Mass and a procession through the streets of Monaco Town

When: 20 January 2012
Web: www.red-radish.com
E-mail: louise@red-radish.com
Canadian singer-songwriter Jill Barber may not yet be a household name on this side of the Atlantic, but for the last few years she's been wowing audiences in Canada with her blend of intimate and romantic cabaret numbers - all performed in a gorgeous sultry contralto with dramatic string orchestrations. And this month, before leaving for a tour of her homeland, she will be entertaining a select group of diners here on the Riviera.
Jill numbers Ella Fitzgerald and Edith Piaf among her greatest influences, and with a significant francophone fanbase in her homeland, she's recently been recording a number of songs in French as well as English, such as 'Dis-moi' (Tell Me) the new single from her latest album, Mischievous Moon.
The album is the fruit of some serious preparation, including a residency at the Banff Centre for the Arts in the Canadian Rockies, and an immersion course in the spoken language here in the south of France. From her birthplace in Ontario to her new home on the other side of the country in Vancouver, Jill is fast becoming the sweetheart of both coasts of Canada.
Can she cast the same spell over the French Riviera? Well, now there's a chance to find out when Jill Barber guests at the Red Radish Supper Club on 20 January.
Like its American and British counterparts (for example, Green Onions in London) this invitation-only pop-up supper club has become immensely successful. Red Radish gathers like-minded fans of fine food by word of mouth - and these days by facebook - for themed parties based on great home cooking. Less expensive than a restaurant, the real pleasure is the fact that guests meet in their own homes - or occasionally a specially-chosen venue.
Previous events have included Spanish and Indian menus, Paella à la Plage, and plenty of ad-hoc entertainment – musical and otherwise – often provided by the guests. But on the 20th, the night, if not the moonlight, will belong to Jill Barber, who will sing songs from her new album as well as many of her other classy numbers.

When: available nowPrice: £103,000in the UK
Marking a new pinnacle of design engineering, Jaguar have taken the covers off the latest in the luxury XK range.
However your new car measures up in terms of speed, power or handling, you're unlikely to find a more exciting newcomer than this supercharged convertible GT. With its 5 litre, 550 horsepower engine, this soft-top followup to the XKR-S coupe can achieve a top speed of 185mph, and runs from zero to 60 miles per hour in 4.2 seconds.
As can be expected for a car in its class, the two-door convertible is beautifully constructed, with an aerodynamic design and a dramatic and bold appearance to the front of this model. The electronically-operated folding roof magically switches the car into Riviera top-down mode in under twenty seconds, while the sportscar-style leather-trimmed seats are adjustable to 16 positions.
The car's six-speed gearbox makes it 8% more powerful than its predecessor, the XKR; and for those who enjoy a sporty feel, there's a new rear wing to improve downforce as well as a specially-tuned exhaust system to give the impression of a really throaty racetrack roar, while on the inside, acoustic balancing reduces noise throughout the cabin.
Adrian Hallmark, Jaguar Global Brand Director, says the new XKR-S Convertible represents the pinnacle of performance and glamour in motoring: 'There is nothing as liberating,' he insists, 'as life behind the wheel of an open-topped Jaguar, and the new XKR-S convertible takes the GT experience to new heights.' And looking at this latest Jag, it's hard to imagine anyone disagreeing.
The car, which debuted in America in November, was priced at just under $140,000. All cars in the US were sold in advance of the car's debut. 100 have been manufactured for the UK market, priced at £103,000, while French models start at €142,800. Where: Cosmopolitan Restaurant
When: 7.30pm-11pm, first Monday of each month (including Mon 9 January)
Contact: +377 93 25 78 68 or facebook
Why not come along on 9 January or 6 February to celebrate Chinese New Year?
2012 is the Year of the Dragon, and for lovers of authentic oriental cuisine, there's a treat in store at Monaco's excellent Cosmopolitan restaurant and wine bar, which hosts a Chinese Night every first Monday of the month throughout the winter season (please note that this January it's on the second Monday).
The Cosmopolitan already has a strong reputation as one of the Principality's best eating-houses, but the China evenings set it apart. For seafood lovers in particular, there's a superb range of starters including crispy fried prawns with plum and chilli dip, and steamed scallops in an aromatic soy sauce, as well as traditional favourites such as spare ribs and hot and sour soup.
Mains include crispy Peking Duck (served of course with traditional hoi-sin sauce and pancakes), as well as inventive combinations of the very best of mediterranean and chinese cuisine - chow mein 'fruits de mer', and - highly recommended - steamed fillet of sea bass with black bean sauce accompanied by stir-fried vegetables. Delicately-flavoured puddings provide the perfect complement to the main courses, especially the lychee panna cotta and the perfect mango cheesecake.
Whether you're a fan of Chinese or whether this is your first experience of the art of Eastern cuisine, you'll find the Cosmopolitan Chinese nights an exhilarating experience and a tantalizing start to 2012. We can guarantee you'll want to come back!

I'm Watching you: the future of the smartphone?

21st century Italian smartwatch returns timekeeping to its traditional place - on the wrist
What: i'mWatch
Where: Available from imwatch.it
Cost: from €299 to €11999
These days, when someone asks you the time, do you glance at the precision timepiece on your wrist, or do you tend to reach for your handbag or suit-pocket to locate your iPhone? The sad fact is that increasing numbers of us have almost completely abandoned wearing a watch, one reason being that although they feel more natural and much more convenient to wear, watches have limited functionality when compared with today's app-laden smartphones. So the obvious question to ask is why the two can't be combined. And that's exactly what Vicenza-based Italian entrepreneurs Manuel Zanella and Massimiliano Bertolini did, when they came up with the concept of i’mWatch.
The world's first fully-functional smartwatch, i'mWatch combines Italian design with a high resolution multitouch screen and the latest Android operating system, resulting in a object that combines phone, watch, and music-player - and which can also communicate wirelessly with the phone in your pocket. These highly desirable objects represent a new level in miniaturization, with the sapphire-glass and aluminium case weighing in at just 70 grammes. More than that, a great deal of thought has gone into the aesthetic pleasure of the final product - and it seems to be paying off.
“We are amazed at the number of online pre-orders received and that we continue to receive day after day for i’mWatch," say Zanella and Bertollini. "In only a few months since the official presentation of our smartwatch, we have exceeded five thousand online orders, with over 200 thousand visits to the i'mWatch website".
While the software and basic technology remain the same across the product range, i'mWatch is available in a number of different case-and-strap combinations, including the basic 'i'mColor' (in seven trendy shades, starting at €299), and the mid-range 'i'mTech' line in titanium or carbonium from €599. At the luxury end of the market, i'mWatch are offering their exquisite and highly desirable 'I'mJewel' variations in yellow, pink or black gold (€9999) or - top of the range - a white gold and diamond version for €11999.
The i'mWatch is a clever amalgamation of existing technologies and cutting-edge design. The Android-based operating system performs most of the basic timekeeping functions along with the ability to send and receive text messages and other notifications. But wireless communication with a tethered internet connection (for example with your smartphone) also means access to a complete world of apps and cloud-based tools specially customized for the miniature 1.54 inch screen. The speakerphone/headphone combination allows not only handsfree calling but also the ability to listen to a library of music from the bespoke 'I'mMusic store, subscriptions to which can be purchased along with the watch.
There have been many recent attempts to combine the various functions of watches and smart devices - for example a strap that allows you to carry the Apple iPod Nano on your wrist, effectively combining music player and timepiece. But the i'mWatch is a step up from here, allowing full telephony and internet services as well. Whether you're in the market for one of these beautifully-crafted devices or are just 'windows-shopping', this product is definitely one to watch in the coming year.
As a postscript we ought to add that although the watch will grace any Monte Carlo wrist, and will surely be the talk of the town at any glamorous shoreside events, this is not a watch to take yachting. The manufacturers tell us that - like other smartphones - it will tolerate a few drops of rain, but is certainly not waterproof!Statistics

New year, new look, for Monaco restaurant

When it reopens in early April, the restaurant will retain its focus on its combination of American cuisine, family-centric dining and celebrity decor - but there will be a new, sleeker look and a brand new party room for everything from private dinners and cocktails, concerts and networking events. Co-founders Kate Powers and Didier Rubiolo are playing their cards close to their chest: 'We don't want to reveal too many of the visual changes to the three-storey restaurant, and a large construction wall will hide most of the new features until the actual re-opening.'
Stars'n'Bars opened in the summer of 1993, inaugurated by a
surprise concert featuring rock legend Chuck Berry. In the intervening twenty years the address has become a celebrity in its own right, welcoming literally hundreds of names from the world of
entertainment. Signed photos from stars of stage and screen line the walls, while the restaurant owns what has become the world's largest collection of celebrity sports
memorabilia, with donations from Michael
Schumacher and Rafael Nadal. Highlights include Prince Albert's first Olympic bobsled, Tour de France bicycles
suspended from the ceiling, and even a Formula 1 car.
More recently, the American-style restaurant - which serves over
half a million customers each year - successfully opened a new branch in Abu Dhabi, located between the Yas Island Marina
and Formula 1 race circuit. In January 2012, Stars'n'Bars will be opening
another restaurant in Dubai, still based on the winning combination of sports and celebrity, but also promoting the principality of Monaco as an
exciting travel destination and a leader in environmental,
cultural and humanitarian causes.
Architects for the new design are Monaco-based Agence Arch, and the builders are Engeco, the Monaco company founded by Stefano Casiraghi, which has been at the forefront of the construction industry in Monaco since 1984.

Although the restaurant will be closed for three months, Kate and Didier will keep their customers informed about the construction progress through their website and Facebook pages. The restaurant can still be contacted at www.starsnbars.com and or info@starsnbars.com

Where: Sporting Monte Carlo
When: 26 February 2012
Contact: +377 98 06 36 36 or ticketoffice@sbm.mc
It has been confirmed that Sting's new tour will include a return visit to Monaco for a one-off concert at the Sporting Monte Carlo in February 2012
One of the world's greatest solo artists for the best part of a quarter of a century, the singer/songwriter recently visited Monte Carlo as part of this summer's Sporting Festival - and he clearly can't wait to return, having specially added the Principality to the itinerary of his Back to Bass tour.
The former front man of The Police, Sting's musical style became instantly recognizable in hits such as Every Breath you Take, Roxanne and Don't Stand So Close to Me. His solo career made him even more of a household name, as he launched into a series of jazz and soul-inspired tracks that became among the best selling of all time, with a host of platinum and multi-platinum discs, and numbers including An Englishman in New York, Russians, Fields of Gold and Seven Days.
The rock legend, who celebrated his sixtieth birthday this October, is embarking on a Boston-to-Cape Town agenda that would be described as punishing for any other artist - especially in the wake of his recent worldwide Symphonicities tour - but he remains one of the most active singers on the global circuit, and like his music, as fresh and energetic as when he began his electrifying career.
To book tickets for this exceptional event, contact +377 98 06 36 36 from 10 am to 7 pm, seven days a week, or e-mail ticketoffice@sbm.mc
Read more...

Where: Galerie Carré Doré
When: Tue-Sat, 6 December 2011 to 16 January 2012
Contact Tel: +377 97 77 12 86One of Monaco's leading contemporary art galleries is showing the best of its year's work until 16 January.
If you're looking for that extra special present for Christmas, there's no better place to start looking than the Galerie Carré Doré, at 5 Rue Princesse Caroline. Concentrating largely on contemporary painting and sculpture, the gallery has built up a strong portfolio of artists who engage in the creation of beautiful, sensory pieces. A good example is Konstantin Khudyakov, whose 'multi-touch' creations are at the cutting edge of interactive digital art.
Another is Filippo Avalle, an artist who is also an instructor at the NABA School of design in Milan. Born in Geneva in 1947 and educated at Turin's Accademia Albertina, since the 1970s he has been creating innovative luminous sculptures made from methacrylate, fibre optics, and white LED.
Taking his cue from the poet Ezra Pound, whose artistic output included a single work 'The Cantos', produced over the course of a lifetime, Avalle too has come to view his entire artistic output - whether in painting, sculpture,
architecture or lighting design - as the progressive creation of a
single, lifetime's work entitled 'Opera Unica'.
Several pieces are on show at the Gallery, including the geometrically intriguing 'Lingua di Donna', and works of an astonishing iridescent beauty such as 'L'Uomo Riccio nel Cerchio Oceanico' (The Rich Man in Ocean's Orbit). Lingua di Donna, by Filippo Avalle
Also exhibiting at the Carré Doré will be a slection of artists whose work has appeared at the gallery in the preceding year, including Konstantin Khudyakov, Amanda Besl, Timofei Smirnov, Gianni Molaro, Ivan Plusch, Olga Bulgakova, Irina Starzhenetskaya, Masami Takemoto, Jin Bo, Carl Warner, Christopher Boffoli, Fareen Butt, Benoit Montet, Giovanni Casellato and Svetlana RezanovaSintesi by Filippo Avalle
Read more...

The exhibition is open daily until the end of November. French journalist and royal correspondent Stéphane Bern, who is responsible for the exhibition, is in no doubt of its significance. 'By getting close to these objects, it's an opportunity to enter into the mythical realm of the prince's wedding', he says, 'an occasion which has given great hope in a world that is too often sad and anxious.'
And of course it's also the perfect excuse in the coming months to enjoy just a part of what has been without doubt one of the most thrilling weeks on record in the Principality.

When 9 December 2011 to 2 January 2012
This year sees the 150th Anniversary of the Unification of Italy, and the Italian Embassy in Monaco is celebrating the event by organizing a major exhibition at the Grimaldi Forum on the theme of Italian Style.
For much of the twentieth century, Italian designers set the pace for the rest of the world in almost any area you care to name - fashion, furniture, film, food, fast cars - the Italians seem to have it all sewn up. Top luxury brands such as Gucci, Armani, Prada and Versace, car designers Ferrari, Maserati and Alfa Romeo, and film-makers Pasolini, Fellini, Visconti and Antonioni have redefined the world around us in unique, life-affirming ways - and that's even before you reach for your morning cup of Illy or Lavazza.
This major cultural event is a multimedia display combining paintings, posters, movies, design objects, photos and sculptures, all intended to highlight how the words 'Made in Italy' have cast their spell over a world of changing international trends in lifestyle and taste for a century and a half.
Artists represented include the futurists Umberto Boccioni and Fortunato Depero, the designer Giò Ponti, the photographer Carlo Mollino and many others. The exhibition also draws heavily on the archives of the Esposizione Universale Roma, Mussolini's ill-fated project to build a new Rome to the southwest of the city.
To complement the exhibition, the Carré Doré Gallery is presenting an exhibition of the work of
artist Francesco Roggero (below)
The Grimaldi Forum is hosting this superb exhibition until 2 January - and if it leaves you hungering for more, well, Monaco is ideally placed for getting away from it all with a trip to Ventimiglia and beyond!

Published by: Editions du Rocher
Pages: 48pp
Price: €15
Following the success of her previous book "The market at la Condamine" ("Au marcau d’a Cundamina"), Françoise Gamerdinger has now brought out a companion volume "Christmas in Monaco" ("Natale a Mùnegu").
"Christmas is all about giving," says the author, "and I wanted to give this book a little local colour". In the pages of this delightful story, the reader is drawn into the world of the Gianchëti family (a typically Monégasque name), and particularly that of the children Dina and Antoine. We see them getting ready for Christmas - enjoying themselves at the outdoor skating rink, the Christmas village at Port Hercule, decorating the house, preparing Christmas food - including focaccia and the traditional 'U Pan de Natale' (Christmas bread), and finally making their way to midnight mass at Monaco Cathedral.
The book, beautifully illustrated by Marie-Dominique Wurz, is a bilingual edition printed in both French and Monégasque, the result of a collaboration with Karyn Salopek-Ardisson and Stephan Maggi, two ardent defenders of the national language.
All royalties, whether to the author, illustrator or translators, will be donated to the Monaco Association against Muscular Dystrophy.U Pan de Natale (Christmas bread), with its traditional cross fashioned from nuts
Read more...

Where: Grimaldi Forum
When 10am to 7pm, 9 to 11December 2011If you're thinking of buying a car, you'll know that it always pays
to look at the second-hand market, where great bargains are often to be
found even among top-quality makes and models. Even so, it can take a
good deal of research and comparison before you're happy with your
choice.
That's why ten of Monaco's top dealers have come together to show off
their range of prestige used motors under a single roof for the second annual Monaco Motortrade show. Specializing
in the most prestigious names in the automotive market, from Aston
Martin to Ferrari and Lamborghini, the show is the result of a meeting
of minds by members of the Chambre Syndicale de l'Automobile Monaco.
Their decision to join forces at this event will allow
customers in Monaco and the Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur region a
great opportunity to see a range of used vehicles, all in superb
condition and fully-warranted, and make their selection much more
quickly and easily than might normally be the case.
Monaco Motortrade - another reason to visit the stunning Grimaldi Forum
The Grimaldi Forum, the traditional home of April's Top Marques
show, is the perfect venue for the show: in its 4000 square metres of
exhibition space, over 130 vehicles will be brought together in one vast
showroom, including superb cars from Alfa Romeo, Aston Martin, Audi, BMW, Ferrari, Jaguar, Land Rover, Maserati, Mercedes, Mini, Porsche, Smart, Volvo, and many others.
Free entry to the three day event is expected to attract thousands of
car lovers, but for those who want to go the whole hog and drive a car
away, a full range of financing options will, of course, be available.

Joël Robuchon, King of the Kitchen

His two award-winning restaurants in Monte Carlo make Joel Robuchon one of the world's greatest chefs
With 28 Michelin stars and a host of signature restaurants in cities across the world, including two at the Métropole Monte Carlo, Joel Robuchon is without doubt one of the most celebrated chefs of our time. Alexis Minder went to interview him exclusively for CityOut
Joel Robuchon is a happy man. He is also charming, delightful and fascinating to talk to, but what strikes you first and foremost is a tangible ‘joie de vivre.’ It impresses you immediately – along with the sense that his happiness comes not from all that he has earned and created (some 20 restaurants around the world) not from all the acclaim he has received (28 Michelin stars, countless accolades) but rather from what he is able to give – the great pleasure of people coming together around a table, to share and commune over a wonderful meal. You once thought of becoming a priest instead of a chef. Are there similarities between the two roles?
Listen: in both roles you have to have faith! In religion, you have to love your fellow man, to love the people around you and it’s the same in cooking – you cannot cook well without loving mankind. When my young chefs first start working with me, I often say: ‘this dish you just made – if you were to make it for your mother, or your girlfriend – would you make it the same way?’ Too often, the answer is no. But to cook well you must first and foremost want to make people happy – and that is one similarity with religion. It is also one of the reasons I like the open kitchen concept – because you see the people and they see you. There is an energy that passes between you.
Secondly, there is a certain rigor to religious life – and you have to have that discipline in cooking as well. You need the respect you find in both. When cooking, it is important to respect the produce – for, in fact, you are taking a life, whether it’s a fish or meat – so you need to have respect. That same respect for life manifests itself in religion – in fact, there are many similarities. You mentioned the ‘open kitchen’ and your Atelier restaurants are just that – they remove the traditional wall between diner and chef and turn the restaurant into one flowing space. This mirrors a popular trend in home and kitchen design today, which impacts how people cook and interact as families. Have you helped to initiate this?
Certainly in my Atelier restaurants it is something very important – as first and foremost I look for conviviality. The ambiance of a restaurant is so important. A restaurant is like a show, where there is something to see and emotion to feel. You need to please the eye as well as the palate and to do so you must involve your guests. With an open kitchen, you can watch the chefs cooking and the food being prepared – it is a ‘spectacle’ that happens and it involves all five senses.
It’s true this trend is very American and now growing in Europe. It is well suited to the life of the family – when kitchens are open there is a different spirit in the home. The children love it. But there is also another aspect, which is recent and has played a part in its popularity. Today kitchens are beautiful as well as functional. There are powerful fans to extract the odors; the décor and the equipment are beautiful and modern. It results in an environment where people want to spend time.Being a New Yorker, I must admit I was very proud to read about the wonderful reception you had when you opened your Atelier restaurant in my home city. Can you tell me what made it special?
Yes, it was wonderful in that everyone offered to help me, to assist me in finding staff and most importantly, to share with me their producers and suppliers. In Europe, these are secrets usually closely guarded – people here are more individualistic. In all the countries in which I’ve travelled, I’ve only experienced this solidarity in the United States – not only in New York but also in Las Vegas. It’s a different culture, an American culture. There is competition of course, but less professional jealousy, less rivalry, it is in a completely different spirit than you encounter elsewhere. The employees, whatever they do, as a general rule work professionally – even the dishwashers. My best employees are in Las Vegas – which is one of the reasons I love it. Vegas is called Disneyland but it’s true. You have the most beautiful shows in the world, the restaurants – there is something for everyone. And people live very well there. My employees have houses with swimming pools, they drive Hummers – they don’t want to come home to live in France!Well, of course the big difference in the U.S. is the space – especially in the desert with land all around. But coming from there, I am always amazed at all Monaco offers in its relatively small space.
Monaco is a village, but an enormously privileged one. It has an extraordinary climate, it enjoys a superb location, it has unrivalled security and natural beauty. Overall, it has a clientele ‘tres initié’ who have been everywhere, seen the world, seen everything! They manifest a high level of culture. Still, I must admit if I could live in any city on a daily basis, it would be New York. Whenever I go I stay in the Four Seasons and everything is all around you. There are the boutiques next door and if you shop in them the people ask if they can help you. They offer to deliver your packages, they thank you for coming even if you take out ten pairs of shoes and don’t buy one. Here sometimes you feel as if you should ask if it is ‘possible to buy a pair of shoes – or am I disturbing you?’Many of the formal, grand restaurants are either closing or operating at a loss today. Does this, combined with trends in modern lifestyles such as shortage of time, everyone so busy and a difficult economy, signal an end to grand formal dining? Do you think it will return as the economic outlook improves?
It is true that the economy had an impact in the beginning, but economic reasons are becoming less important. I believe the grand restaurants will always exist but there will be fewer of them. And they will be reserved for big events and very special occasions.
Today the mentality has changed – people want to go to restaurants relaxed. When one goes to some high class restaurants, it is less relaxed, particularly for people coming from different cultures. They wonder which fork goes where, they are as stiff as if they are in church! I don’t believe it’s the future. When I first came to Monaco people were talking about Robuchon accepting men without ties, using inox cutlery. Why? Because I remember once eating at a Monte Carlo hotel – on the 15th of August, a very hot day and I was wearing a silk shirt and they told me I would need a jacket. It was so hot; I said that in that case I prefer to eat somewhere else. So they put a jacket on the chair behind me and even so, while we ate, the air condition wasn’t working and during the whole meal, the women’s makeup was melting – it was a horror! So when I opened here I said no, we are not going to insist on formal attire – and I saw how much it was appreciated. Not that we welcome people in bathing suits, of course, but they can be comfortable and at ease.
People want to go out to relax and enjoy their food, to have a good time. The same three star restaurants will have the same wonderful food but with less ceremony. I think the grand, more formal restaurants will not disappear entirely but they will be reserved for the exceptional occasion. Many chefs today have taken on the role of public educator – such as Jamie Oliver from England. How important is it to you to teach so that people learn to cook properly and well?
I think it is very important. Cooking brings people together, like we just talked about in religion. It is a communion in which we unite around a table. To transmit this knowledge via the media is wonderful – because ultimately we spend a significant amount of time to nourish ourselves. If we can improve people’s lives by how we teach them to do that, it is a very good thing. But we can go much further – I work with many health professionals in Las Vegas – medical professors who by changing the diets of their patients have significantly improved their health. They have even managed to reduce brain tumors by nutritional means, just by the kind and quality of the food. Cucumin, rosmarine, tea blanc, foods rich in anti-oxidants which yield super results. We as chefs can really help by teaching and sharing this knowledge through the media, to help improve everyone’s well being.Which is your favorite cuisine, if indeed you have one?
You find something interesting in all the cuisines of the world, whether Moroccan, Chinese, all of them! But in French cooking there is a variety of techniques that is important. The answer to your question comes not from me but from young chefs all over the world - all of them want to come to France. Of all the great chefs I’ve known, it’s extremely rare to find one who hasn’t studied in France – to learn the mastery of French cuisine. So it is they who answer the question!
I think the other cuisine that has had a great variety of technical mastery and influence is Chinese, but I love Japanese too – it is very Zen – they have a tremendous respect for the products and eat them in the right season.
But there are so many, I’m thinking of NY where I am opening a new, simple concept near Union Square next to an organic Farmer’s Market with fresh wonderful products. The Swiss also attach a tremendous importance to their cuisine and have absolutely exceptional products. I often vacation with Fredy Girardet, near Gstaad – we eat together the milk, the cream, the butter (and after 2 weeks of regime!)
And all those Michelin Stars! How have they impacted your work? Do you find they inspire you to greater innovation or rather to tried and tested formulas?
First and foremost with the Michelin stars, the impact is global. For example, when we opened the first year in Las Vegas, we would have 10, 20, maybe 30 couverts – occasionally up to 50. When Michelin awarded us the three stars - since that day the restaurant has always been full – full every single day since.
It is mostly the younger chefs that feel the weight – the need to stay in keeping with what they perceive as strict guidelines. But I don’t think it’s the attitude that Michelin is looking for. The Michelin rewards all kinds of cuisines: classic, traditional, modern. When Michelin recognizes you – the advantage is that you have the media’s attention and that allows a certain freedom of expression – you are recognized, and some take it and run with it that they can do what they want. And there’s something else, which I’ve seen in a place like Hong Kong – five years ago there were very few good restaurants in Hong Kong that were not Chinese. Michelin arrived and it’s really lifted the level of the other restaurants as everyone wants to do better and strives for a star.
Certainly, I am very happy to have my stars! You strike me as a very happy man in general
I am happy! If I wasn’t happy I would retire – I don’t need to do anything anymore. Many chefs have so much stress – they are afraid to lose a star. Today I have 28 stars, it is true if I lose one I would not like it, but it would not be the end of my world.
Ultimately, I am happy because, you know, to come around a table – it unites people. It creates bonds. Meals are important moments in life – they are among the few moments when we all come together, as a family, as friends. In modern life, there aren’t many other moments, when we communicate together, aside from being in the same room, watching the television, etc. but that it isn’t a communion. Lastly, I don’t really dare ask, but everyone to whom I mentioned this interview said the same thing ‘Ask him how he makes the mashed potatoes!’
(Laughter) Yes, one day we will have to tell …

'Ygeia mas!', often abbreviated to 'Yamas!', is the traditional mealtime
toast at Greek dining tables, as they groan under the combined weight
of calamari, souvlaki, moussaka, stuffed vine leaves and carafes of
retsina. Meaning 'To our health', the phrase is the inspiration for Monaco's latest culinary
venture which aims to bring the best of Hellenic hospitality to the
region.
This Greek delicatessen and catering service is situated near the Jardin
Exotique, and is open Monday to
Friday from 11.30 am to 2pm and Monday to Saturday 6.30 to 10.30 pm.
Better still, their web service provides the simplest of interfaces for
online shopping and delivery.
Each dish is prepared using traditional methods, with fresh produce - including cheese, extra-virgin olive
oil and pitta bread - imported directly from Greece. Yamas delivers for both business and personal events, from a simple lunch
at the office or a meal with friends to birthday and children's
parties. A wide range of delicious and
nutritious food is on offer: mouthwatering horiatiki (country) salads and Greek meze, or
finger food: souvlaki, tyropita (cheese pasties), and delicious traditional sweets.
So if you feel like something special from the other end of the
Mediterranean, raise your glass of ouzo and say with us 'Ygeia Sas!' to
Yamas!Christmas CateringIf you're thinking of putting together that extra-special Christmas lunch or dinner, Yamas, Monaco's bespoke Greek caterers, are ready to help, providing an appetizing festive occasion that will live long in the memory.

This excellent charity event was created in 1970 by three founder members, St Paul’s Church, Saint-Vincent-de–Paul and the British Association. This is a date definitely not to be missed, as it's a fun day out for
all the family and a great way to find pre-Christmas bargains.
Entry is free and the doors open at 10 o'clock am. There are over 25 stalls including clothes (for men, women and children), books (in English as well as French), antiques, children's toys, Christmas cards, Youth boutique Monégasque, Greek, Spanish and English speciality stands plus electrical goods, DVDs, CDs, shoes, jewellery, bags, household items, gifts and novelties.
This year’s Tombola has over 40 exciting prizes and tickets are just €2 each, with the winning tickets to be drawn at 5pm. If you would like to buy or help to sell tickets before the Kermesse, please contact Vanessa on vanessa.ilsley@libello.com or +377 93 25 53 45.
A snack bar is open from 10 o'clock to 6 o'clock with a wide selection of delicious and inexpensive food and drinks.
Bake for BAM!
The Kermesse relies on donations of all kinds, especially for this year's event, which sees the inauguration of the British Association's Christmas Crafts and Home Produce Stand. The organizers are looking for lots of home baked products, such as cupcakes, scones, cakes, flapjacks - so get out all your favourite recipe books and bake for BAM. All donations of jams, pickles, chutneys and donations of Christmas decorations are also needed to ensure BAM has a well-stocked stand.
For anyone who is travelling to England this week, anything to do with Christmas would be useful. Please contact Aisling Launder on +377 93 50 19 52 or Anne Batt on +33 4 93 28 45 81 or bam@monaco.mc
The English Book Stand needs lots of fiction, including best-sellers, and non-fiction hardbacks - for example cookery books, dictionaries, travel guides, gardening, health and medicine, art, photography, coffee-table books, not to mention any first editions! For more details please contact Merville on +377 93 15 02 89
The Brocante Stand needs everything for the home: china, ornaments, linens, cutlery, kitchen equipment, bedding, sheets, pillowcases, sports goods, pictures. Please contact Anna Cunningham on +33 4 93 78 88 91
The Electra Stand is always looking for electrical goods in good order: DVDs, CDs, videos, watches, posters, binoculars, cameras, computer games, telephones, electric hair products, beauty spas, hairdryers, radios, hi-fi systems, iPods, calculators, Mont Blanc pens, travel irons, travel hairdryers, kitchen appliances including choppers, whisks, mixers etc., car radios, light fittings. Please contact Merville on +377 93 15 02 89
There will also be an Antiques Stall (with not too much emphasis on 'Antiques' - anything just that little bit better or a little bit prettier is just fine!)
As always as many items as possible will be appreciated, so if you are 'de-cluttering' you can donate as follows:

This year's Monte-Carlo Jazz Festival 2011, sponsored by Rolex and Audi, will be held once more in one of Monaco's most spectacular atmospheric venues, the legendary Salle Garnier of the Opera de Monte Carlo.
On its opening night, the festival features some of the world's greatest guitarists, including John McLaughlin and the inspirational gipsy-jazz maestro Biréli Lagrène, followed, on the Friday night, by clarinettist and sax player Michel Portal and drummer/composer Aldo Romano.
The final night introduces the Tigran Hamasyan Trio, performing their latest opus 'Red Hai' with their band Aratta Rebirth, a group of five young musicians from Los Angeles who explore the frontiers of jazz alongside the trio, blending musical styles as varied as hard-rock, folk music and groove. The main set, closing a electrifying three days of jazz, will feature Avishai Cohen.
Bassist, pianist and composer, Avishai Cohen has become one of the most symbolic figures of contemporary music. His style, embracing jazz, world, pop, hard-bop and traditional music, is unclassifiable. His latest album, 'Seven Seas' is a case in point, combining an incisive piano, a vigorous oud - or lute - and a melancholy English horn, overlaid with Cohen's lyrics, at times whispered, at times tempestuous. A truly great performer of colossal energy, it's worth booking a ticket for him alone.Programme
