Where: Oceanographic Museum, Monaco
When: Saturday 12 May to Monday 15 October 2012
Open: Daily 9.30am to 7pm (7.30 pm in July and August)*
Admission: €14 (€10, €7)
Information: +377 93 15 36 00
Following the enormous success of Damien Hirst's exhibition 'Cornucopia' at the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco in 2010, another controversial Young British Artist has picked up the baton, again seeking to unite art and nature in a building which is fast becoming one of the major focal points not just for marine biologists but also lovers of contemporary art. Marc Quinn, who was born in London in 1964, is no stranger to lurid headlines in the tabloid press, especially since his 1991 piece Self, described in catalogues as made using 'stainless steel, perspex, refrigeration equipment, and blood'. His own blood, in fact, 4.5 litres of which he sculpted into a likeness of his own head. Today, there are several 'Selfs' in existence, since he repeats the exercise every five years. Remarkably, this gory but undeniably fascinating bust has fetched a great deal of interest - and money - in the international art market, with the original selling for £1.5 million to an American collector in 2005.
Although this may sound like something from a gothic horror story, what propels Quinn's vision is something far more scientific. Other objects have included a 'portrait' made from the DNA of human genome pioneer Sir John Sulston, and 'Garden', a collection of plants which could not survive in the same habitat in nature, yet are happy to do so when cryogenically frozen and placed in an artwork. The Origin of the World (Cassis madagascariensis) Indian Ocean, 310Bronze, 2012
Quinn piqued interest in a more public way with his monumental marble statue for the empty fourth plinth in Trafalgar Square. Statues in London typically celebrate the glorious deeds of male military leaders. This one sought to raise awareness of other members of society: it was of a pregnant woman, Alison Lapper, who was born with no arms and shortened legs. Throughout his work, the fascination with what makes is human is supremely evident. Recent projects include a new series of flower paintings executed
in reverse colour and two large-scale orchid sculptures in white
painted bronze. About the venue
Built literally into the side of the legendary Rock of Monaco, the Oceanographic Museum has been guarding the ocean for over a century. It was designed as a palace dedicated to the sea, and a place to display the results of the oceanographic surveys carried out by its founder. These days, the museum is more a point of cultural exchange and discussion, with the common heritage of mankind at its heart.
For Quinn's exhibition, sixty pieces will be on display throughout the halls of the museum, as well as in the front courtyard and on the panoramic terrace. Sculptures and paintings will gain particular emphasis from their juxtaposition with scientific displays, and of course visitors buying a ticket for the aquarium will have free access to the exhibition. In this way, the artist will be helping to fulfil the vision of HSH Prince Albert I,
who had the museum constructed in the first place to 'gather together in
one place the two driving forces of civilization: art and science'.

Record sales at RM Monaco Auction

Rare Ferrari automobiles and hydroplane achieve highest prices ever paid at auction
At the RM Auction held at Monaco's Grimaldi Forum last weekend, a rare
1957 Ferrari 625 Spider Testa Rossa (one of only two in existence) went under the hammer for an incredible €5,040,000, the most ever paid for this particular model. The sale was the crowning moment of a hugely exciting and enormously profitable occasion.
Timed to coincide with the Grand Prix de Monaco Historique,
the two-day event will go down in the history books as one of the most
successful European car auctions of all time, with more than 90 classic
automobiles, 100 Ducati motorcycles and three boats generating a total of €33.5m ($43.4m) in sales.
As well as the Testa Rossa, a further ten cars fetched at least €1 million each, with
four lots surpassing €2 million. 'It has been a fantastic success', said Max Girardo, Managing Director of RM
Europe. 'Once again, RM has proved itself to be the pre-eminent force in the
collector car auction scene.'
During a day of telephone-number-size bids, it was Ferrari that stood out, with a 1952 225 Sport Spyder
'Tuboscocca'- one of only 12 Vignale Spyders ever produced - and a 1966 Ferrari
206 S Dino Spyder each fetching €2,520,000.
Other items from the stable of the 'Cavallino Rampante' attracted similar high prices: the gavel came down a
1971 Ferrari 365 GTS/4 Daytona Spyder (one of only 18 left-hand-drive examples) at the €1,008,000 mark, while the Ferrari F1-2000 racing car driven by Michael Schumacher on his way to the
2000 Driver's Championship fetched €806,400. And the prancing horse became a Pegasus with the much-anticipated sale of a 1953 Timossi-Ferrari 'Arno XI' Racing Hydroplane for €868,000.
Even without the dominance of Ferrari, there were still records to be broken: world record auction prices were achieved for a Peugeot and an Alfa type-33 - but this weekend there was no doubt that Monaco belonged to the marque from Modena.RM Monaco Auction - Lots exceeding €1 million:
Lot 345 - 1957 Ferrari 625 TRC Scaglietti Spider - €5,040,000 (world record for a 625 TRC at auction)
Lot 362 – 1952 Ferrari 225 Sport Spyder 'Tuboscocca'- €2,520,000 (world record for a 225 S at auction)
Lot 357 – 1996 Ferrari 206 S Dino Spyder- €2,520,000
Lot 353 – 1936 Mercedes-Benz 540 K Sport Cabriolet A- €2,324,000
Lot 382 – 2007 Peugeot 908 V-12 HDi FAP Le Mans Racing Car- €1,680,000 (world record for a Peugeot at auction)
Lot 385 – 2006 Ferrari FXX Evoluzione- €1,338,400
Lot 373 – 1969 Alfa Romeo Tipo 33/3 Sports Racer- €1,232,000 (world record for an Alfa Tipo 33 at auction)
Lot 367 – 1948 Ferrari 166 Inter Spyder Corsa- €1,010,000
Lot 321 – 1971 Ferrari 365 GTS/4 Daytona Spyder- €1,008,000
Lot 333 – 1968 Alfa Romeo Tipo 33/2 'Daytona'- €1,008,000
---
A special aspect of this year's auction was RM's first full-day
motorcycle sale featuring the Ducati brand, and at its heart
the world-famous Carlo Saltarelli Collection. The 96 lots represented provided an unbroken history of the famous motorcycle, with two lots in particular - the GP10 raced
by world champion Casey Stoner and the GP11 bike raced
by Valentino Rossi - fetching just over and just under €250,000 respectively. Ducati representative Diego Sgorbati was delighted: 'We are very happy for the two
new owners of these precious, high-tech racing motorcycles. It was great
experience to see that the bikes generated
so much attention'.
And there was attention in plenty, extending over 33 countries and attracting bidders from as far away as the UAE, China and Brazil. According to Max Girado, 'Any motorcycle sale that
achieves in excess of one million euros and which also sees significant
records tumble, can only be judged as a fantastic success.'
RM's next European auction, the Aalholm Automobile Collection featuring 175 vehicles offered 'without reserve', will be held on 12 August in Southern Denmark, followed by RM's highly anticipated UK sale at Battersea Evolution in central London on 31 October.

See you on the grid.
What: 70th Monaco Grand Prix 2012Where: MonacoWhen:Thursday 24 May to Sunday 27 May 2012
Tickets and contacts: +377 93 15 26 24
(see Ticketing below for pricing details)The Monaco Grand Prix is one of the oldest and most prestigious car races in the world, and the only one to have been held on the same circuit since it began in 1929 under the auspices of the Automobile Club de Monaco, who still preside over the organization of the race today. You can read more of the fascinating early history of the race here.
Of all Formula One events, the Monaco Grand Prix is acknowledged to
provide the greatest thrills, not least because its course takes it
literally around the town on roads normally bustling with tourist
traffic.
Compared with those races run on dedicated racetracks, there’s a slight compromise in speed and overtaking, since the circuit is so perilously narrow – but the
proximity of real life to the supercharged world of F1 is simply too
inviting. For newcomers and veteran spectators alike, watching Monaco
can be the closest thing to actually participating as a driver.
This year, Monaco forms the sixth leg of the year-long Formula 1 season, two weeks after the Spanish Grand Prix at Montmelo and a fortnight before the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal. And already the season is shaping up to be one of the most fascinating and unpredictable in years.
From a technical point of view, changes in the rules and regulations have led to further controversial developments in the shape and design of the cars; and from a sporting perspective, there have already been a number of upsets in the rank order.
The programme below also contains side events such as the GP2 series, which acts not only as a curtain raiser to the main event but also showcases emerging talent, with many of its drivers using the series as a stepping stone to full scale Formula 1 after a year or two. For visitors to Monaco this year, there has been the added attraction of the biennial Grand Prix Historique.

Cannes Film Festival 2012

Where: Palais des Festivals
When: 16-27 May 2012
After the Oscars, Cannes is probably the world's best-known film awards festival and ceremony. Like its Hollywood equivalent, it's a glittering, star-studded event held each year for film industry professionals - actors, directors and producers - who flock from all over the world to meet on the Promenade de la Croisette, accompanied of course by hordes of adoring fans and paparazzi.
Once off the red carpet, though, this is distinctly not Hollywood. Only one juror is American this year (Alexander Payne, director of 'About Schmidt'); and as usual, the selection of films is much more international than that made by the Academy of Motion Pictures. Movies from Romania, Russia, Mexico and Germany appear in this year's list; and although there's a sprinkling of well-known names among the directors (Cronenberg, Anderson, Loach), there are also a huge number that we bet you've never heard of.
The pictures that interest everyone, of course, are those entered for the top prize, the coveted Palme d'Or, and they are screened only for the accredited few. But the eleven-day filmfest also includes a large number of films 'out of competition', screenings of which are open to the general public at the Cinéma de la Plage (Cinema on the Beach), along with showings of 'Cannes Classics'.
This year, the Beach Cinema is celebrating Fifty Years of James Bond, with special showings of Dr No (1962), From Russia with Love (1963), On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969) and the remake of Casino Royale (2006) among others.
---Films in Competition (Official selection)Amour (Love) directed by Michael Haneke
Georges and Anne are retired music teachers in their eighties whose daughter, also a musician, lives abroad with her family. The relationship between all three characters - played by Isabelle Huppert, Emmanuelle Riva and Jean-Louis Trintignant - is put to the test when Anne suffers a stroke. Baad El Mawkeaa (After the Battle) directed by Yousry Nasrallah
A Romeo and Juliet for our times. Set during the recent Arab Spring, a young girl - who also happens to be a
political activist - falls in love with a soldier in Tahrir Square. But her affections must compete with the influence he comes under from supporters of President Moubarak.

Cosmopolis directed by David Cronenberg
Eric Packer, played by Twilight's Robert Pattinson, is a Wall Street 'master of the universe' whose moneyed dreams are matched only by an increasing paranoia as he watches his world disintegrate from the comfort of his chauffeur-driven limousine. Da-Reun Na-Ra-e-Suh (In Another Country) directed by Hong Sangsoo
The South Korean director, whose earlier film Hahaha won the Prix Un Certain Regard at the 2010 Film Festival, returns with this tale of three women named Anne - all played by Isabelle Huppert - who consecutively visit a seaside town. The film records their stays at the same small
hotel and their encounters with an identical group of people, including a certain lifeguard who
restlessly wanders up and down the beach.De Rouille et d'Os (Rust and Bone) directed by Jacques Audiard
Based on Craig Davidson's short story collection of the same name, Rust and Bone tells the story of an unemployed 25-year-old who falls in love with a killer whale trainer, played by Marion Cotillard, who loses both legs in a horrific accident.
Do-Nui Mat (The Taste of Money) directed by Im Sang-Soo
Joo Young-jak is the private male secretary of Baek Geum-ok, a middle-aged
married heiress. Baek's infatuation with Joo is complicated when her daughter Na-mi - a very different character than her materialistic parents - arrives on the scene.Dupã Dealuri (Beyond the Hills) directed by Cristian Mungiu
His earlier film - about a woman who assists her friend to arrange an illegal abortion in the Romania of the 1980s - won Mungiu the Palme d'Or in 2007. It remains to be seen whether Beyond the Hills, about the relationship of two young women who grow up in the same orphanage,
can repeat that success.Holy Motors directed by Leos Carax
Denis Lavant plays a man (DL) living
multiple lives - sometimes he is a man, sometimes a woman, sometimes young, sometimes at the point of death, sometimes poor and sometimes as rich as Croesus. But what his true identity is, who knows? Eva Mendes and Kylie Minogue also star in Carax's offbeat fantasy.Jagten (The Hunt) directed by Thomas Vinterberg
What happens when a casual comment spreads in a community to the stage of collective hysteria? Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen plays 40-year-old divorcee Lucas, accused of a crime he did not commit, and struggling to win back his life and dignity. Killing Them Softly directed by Andrew Dominik
Based on the bestselling gangland novel by George V Higgins, Dominik's film tracks Jackie Cogan's (Brad Pitt's) life as a 'point man', hired to scout the area for cops in advance of a 'hit'. He's highly successful at his game, but things go wrong when his Mafia bosses become the victims of a heist.Lawless directed by John Hillcoat
Another dose of gangland violence, but this time set in the Depression, about a gang of bootleggers operating in Franklin County, Virginia. This all-star movie is based on the true story of the Bondurant brothers, who took the law into their own hands and created a whole new genre of crime.Like Someone in Love directed by Abbas Kiarostami
is Iranian director Kiarostami's fifth movie at Cannes. It tells the story of a young Japanese woman, Rin Takanashi, who finances her studies through
prostitution and falls into a relationship with an elderly academic who also happens to be one of her clients.Moonrise Kingdom directed by Wes Anderson
Set in the nineteen-sixties, the film follows a pair of twelve-year-old lovers (Kara Hayward and Jared Gilman), whose elopement from their small New England town prompts a frantic search led
by Sheriff Bruce Willis and parents Bill Murray and Frances McDormand.Mud directed by Jeff Nichols
Another coming-of-age drama sees two 14-year-boys stumbling across an
adult outlaw named Mud, and helping him as he goes on the run in Mississippi. A cross between Huckleberry Finn and Stand by Me, the movie, from 33-year old director Nichols, has been gathering a good deal of attention. On the Road directed by Walter Salles
Jack Kerouac's 1957 novel is for many readers the definition of the Beat generation, and the archetype of all 'road trips' ever since. Following the death of his father, struggling young writer Sal Paradise
(based on Kerouac himself) embarks upon a journey across America with his friend and hero, Dean
Moriarty, a traveller and mystic, and the living epitome of beat.Paradies: Liebe (Paradise: Love) directed by Ulrich Seidl
On Kenya’s beaches they are known as 'sugar mamas': European women paying for love with African boys. This film, the first in a trilogy (Love, Belief and Hope), follows the story of 50-year-old Teresa from Austria, who travels to this vacation paradise in the hope of finding exactly that. Post Tenebras Lux directed by Carlos Reygadas
Reygadas's latest outing is a semi-autobiographical story centering on the lives of Juan and his urban family now living in the Mexican countryside. A highly photographic film, not many clues have yet been given as to the plot, leading some to believe it could be a grand visual narrative in the style of 'The Tree of Life'.Reality directed by Matteo Garrone
The only Italian entry in this year's competition, Reality centres on a Neapolitan fish merchant who becomes so obsessed with Grande Fratello (the Italian version of Big Brother) that he starts to act as though his life is being recorded at every turn. The Angels' Share directed by Ken Loach
Loach won the Palme d'Or in 2006 for 'The Wind that shakes the Barley'. For his latest film he's returned to the Glasgow setting of his earlier film 'Sweet Sixteen', though with a bittersweet comedy rather than that movie's hard social realism. Robbie, an ex-offender and new father, embarks on an adventure with his new found friends to a whisky distillery and discovers that turning to drink might just change his life. The Paperboy directed by Lee Daniels
A truly spine-tingling story based on the 1995 novel by Pete Dexter, and scripted at least in part by Pedro Almodovar. Nicole Kidman plays Charlotte Bless, determined to save Hillary van Wetter (John Cusask) from Death Row, where he has been languishing after taking out revenge on an unscrupulous sheriff. V Tumane (In the Fog) directed by Sergei Loznitsa
A Russian-language period drama set on the German-occuoied Western front of the Soviet Union. Sushenya is wrongly accused of collaborating with the Nazis. The
largely-unknown cast includes Vlad Ivanov, who also appeared in Cristian
Mungiu’s Palme d'Or winner '4 Months, 3 Weeks, 2 Days'Vous n'avez encore rien vu (You ain't seen nothin' yet!) directed by Alain Resnais
Loosely based on the play 'Eurydice' by Jean Anouilh, the story revolves around a group of actors who have gathered in the
house of a dead playwright for the reading of his will.

Risk off theme again today stoked by further Euro based political and growth concern, coupled with evidence of slowing Chinese growth - foreign direct investment fell for a sixth month again in April. Separately, PIMCO today forecast Chinese growth in the “mid-7 per cent range”, targeting a bottom for the economy closer to Q3. In other macro releases, the Reserve Bank of Australia released its minutes of meeting for May, highlighting below average growth and weaker consumer confidence for its most recent 50bps interest rate cut. The AUDUSD continued to sell off in response, last $0.9977.
With risk off, defensive sectors outperformed; Financials, Telecommunications and Consumer Staples were the best. Commodities continued to ease, July Copper -0.59% @ $353.30/lb and June WTI -0.49%, $94.32/bbl.Europe

Where: Grand Prix circuit, Monaco
When: 11-13 May 2012
Web: http://www.acm.mc
Entry: €20 (Saturday), €35 (Sunday), €45 (weekend)
Admission is free for under-15s on all days, and for all for the Friday afternoon practice session on the Friday.Book tickets for this event now by clicking on the web link above
Every two years, a fortnight before the main Grand Prix, the Automobile Club of Monaco hosts a race that in some ways is even more thrilling: the Grand Prix Historique. A celebration of grace and style over speed and power (though they were powerful enough in their day), the race is a chance to witness the greatest collection of classic Grand Prix cars from around the world in action. Everything is identical to the GP proper: the same circuit, the same infrastructure, even the same trackside support teams. Only the age of the cars is different.
Participants are placed in seven categories and events:
Group A - Grand Prix cars and voiturettes built before 1952
Group B - Grand Prix cars built before 1961
Group C - Sports Cars and Sport Prototypes pre-1953
Group D - Grand Prix cars (rear-engine) built before 1966
Group E - 3-litre GP cars from F1 Grand Prix from 1966 to 1972
Group F - 3-litre GP cars from F1 Grand Prix between 1973 and 1978
Group G - Formula 3, 2000cm3 (before 1985)
Drivers from twenty different countries will be taking part. The British have a strong presence (87), followed by the Americans (31), then the French (23), Italians (19), and Germans (10). 14 Monegasque drivers will be defending the colours of the Principality throughout the various races.
Seeing - and smelling - these fabulous machines as they roar round the famous Monaco circuit once more is an unforgettable, nostalgic experience. The heady mixture of castor oil and methanol really is the signature of these classics that contributed so much to the magic of the Monaco circuit over the years.
Having whittled down 300 applicants to just over 200, the Automobile Club de Monaco has drawn up an exciting list of challengers for the 2012 edition, including former drivers such as Dieter Quester (BMW), Fabien Giroix (DTM) and Arturo Merzario (Ferrari, Williams),
as well as celebrity drivers such as Tony Smith, manager of rock group Genesis, and Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason, each driving racing cars from their own collections.
For the sixth consecutive time, official timekeeping for the event will be in the hands of Chopard, the famous Swiss watchmaker and jeweller. They are joined as partners by Credit Suisse, who this year have organized a private Credit Suisse Driver’s Club as a meeting place for competitors and their guests. Programme

The exceptional climate and natural geography of Monaco, on its rocky headland between the Mediterranean and the mountains, makes it the perfect venue for nature lovers and gardeners alike. The Monaco Garden Club, a non-profit association, was created in 1968 by Princess Grace. A devotee of the natural world, and of flowers in particular, it was her wish to promote public appreciation of the exceptional work done by gardeners and flower arrangers all over the world.
For one weekend each year the terraces behind the Monte Carlo Casino burst into bloom with an exceptional display of flowering plants, as professional gardeners and designers gather to showcase their work. Dedicated to the art of Mediterranean horticulture, this ephemeral garden, designed by renowned landscape architect Jean Mus, has gained a wide reputation for its beautiful and diverse exhibits.
The list is impressive: flowering and aromatic plants, olive and citrus trees, vegetables, tropical orchids, rose bushes, box trees, ferns and bamboos abound; and for the thousands of visitors to this exceptional parade, the wonderful aroma of jasmine and lavender.
This year, two additional events take place under the aegis of the festival: the 45th International Flower Arranging Competition and the 1st Monaco International Rose Competition, sponsored by Swiss watchmaker Piaget. Eighteen professional rose-growers from six countries (Germany, France, Italy, Japan, Switzerland, and the USA) will be participating in the latter competition, and the variety that gains most points in any category will be honoured with the prestigious 'Golden Rose of Monaco', a piece of jewellery specially created by the sponsors.
Twinned with 'Rêveries sur les Jardins', these internationally-renowned competitions attract many floral artists, and over 2000 individual floral arrangements will be on show. Accessories on display and sale include panama hats, stone fountains,
gazebos, candelabra, pottery lamps and bathroom and hammam products. There is also an extensive bookshop.Programmefor the 45th Flower Arranging competitionSaturday 5 May, 5pm - 8pm

International Showjumping in Monaco

One of the highlights of the equestrian year takes place from 28-30 June
What: 17th Monte Carlo International Showjumping
Where: Port Hercule
When: 28-30 June 2012
Horses and Monaco go hoof in hand: rub the knee of Louis XIV’s silver steed in the Hôtel de Paris, and it’s supposed to bring you luck at the Casino. But if you want to experience true horsemanship, make sure you’re at the Port of Monaco from 28 to 30 June, when for the seventeenth year the principality will be hosting a key stage of the Global Champions Tour.
From Doha to Abu Dhabi, by way of Valencia, Hamburg and Shanghai, this is one of the most magnificent of international sporting competitions - and one of the most lucrative. Founded in 2006 by Olympic gold medallist Jan Tops, the GCT brings together the top forty riders in the Rolex rankings to
compete in a series of shows that aim to provide the very best in
showjumping. In 2010 the leader of the GCT rankings
received €300,000, the biggest single prize in any of the
three Olympic equestrian disciplines (dressage, eventing and
showjumping). During this season, the eventual champion, Marcus Ehning,
won over €500,000 in total prize money over the nine shows.
Port Hercule, with its superb backdrop of sails and superyachts, provides the most elegant of settings for this leg of the competition and the perfect location for both competitors and spectators. The specially-constructed showjumping arena is set up between the Swimming Pool and La Rascasse immediately below the dramatic Rock of Monaco and the Prince’s Palace.About the show

Showjumping is one of the three major equestrian disciplines, in which horses and riders jump over a pre-defined course of 10 to 16 jumps, each up to 6ft 6in (2m) high. Competitors must complete the course while trying to avoid penalties for knocking down rails, refusals to jump or exceeding the time limit.
The course is designed with many challenging turns and obstacles to test the mental and physical agility of horse and rider; and of course timing is essential, the great skill being to calculate with precision the exact number of steps taken in the lead-up to a jump.
As well as the prestigious Grand Prix du Prince, this year's event will see the award, for the second time, of the must-see Pro-Am Cup, sponsored by Prince Albert's niece,
Charlotte Casiraghi. Among the riders to look out for are the 38-year-old Australian Edwina Alexander, who married Jan Tops last September; 37-year-old
Marco Kutscher
from Saxony, and 31-year-old French rider and World Cup silver medallist Kévin Staut who features in the video below.

Tax free? Not if you're a French footballer!

Why Monaco Football Club will not be winning the World Cup any time soon
Elaine Sciolino, Paris correspondent for the New York Times, has made a delightfully tongue-in-cheek suggestion that French millionaire footballers attempting to flee the punitive 75% tax rate proposed by France's new socialist president, Francois Hollande, could lead to an exodus to Monaco - and result in a world cup win for the Principality.
In his followup article, veteran reporter John Haydon points out in today's Washington Times that sadly such an outcome is technically impossible from a football perspective. AS Monaco FC is a club side playing in the French League, rather than a national team; and anyway the majority of the current players already live outside France, with ten playing in the English Football League, three for Spanish teams, one in Milan and one in Munich.

But there is a further, financial, reason why the humorous scenario painted by Ms Sciolino could not happen. In December 1961, French president Charles de Gaulle, fearing a tax drain on the French economy, pushed Prince Rainier III of Monaco into signing a
fiscal pact ensuring that French citizens in Monaco could not benefit
from income tax exemption.

To this day, only French nationals pay income tax in Monaco (although US citizens must also continue to pay US Federal tax wherever they are resident in the world). The amount payable is assessed according to the principles of French tax law and is paid directly to the French Government. Exceptions apply only for those French citizens who a) were habitually resident in Monaco for a period of five years on 13 October1962 and hold dual French and Monegasque nationality; b)are attached to the Prince's household; or c) are the French spouses of foreigners residing in Monaco, whose marriage took place before 1 January 1986.

For those interested in learning more about the standoff between the two countries, a new movie, Grace of Monaco - starring Nicole Kidman as Princess Grace - is due to be released later this year. The Cannes Film Festival is not the only celebration of excellence in the arts to be taking place on the Riviera this May. For the seventh successive year, Monaco is hosting a competition of World Cinema to raise money for charitable causes, and this year's lineup is every bit as spectacular as that taking place further along the coast.
The MCFF is an annual event benefitting poor children from all over the world. This year's film festival is raising much needed funds in support of the Virlanie Children's Foundation in the Philippines. MCFF also helps filmmakers from all walks of life to find financing and distribution for their films. No fewer than twelve movies are shown each day during the week at the Princess Grace Theatre or the Gildo Pastor Center, with the best shorts and features singled out for special awards by an international jury.
All screenings are open to the public, free of charge. On the final night of the MCFF, a spectacular gala dinner and show take place at the Villa Ephrussi to raise money for charity.ProgrammeWednesday 9 May

The raison d'être of the British Association of Monaco is to extend a welcome to those who move to Monaco, as well as providing support, friendship, and opportunities for networking. The Friendship Club meets every first and third Friday, with other events on Thursdays throughout the month.
This summer, events take on a special flavour with the celebration of Queen Elizabeth II's 60 years on the throne. As the longest reigning monarch since Queen Victoria (whose rule extended to nearly 64 years), Elizabeth has provided extraordinary stability in one of the most unstable periods of history, little of which could have been foretold at the outset of her reign in 1952. Come along by yourself or

Where: Sporting Monte Carlo
When: Friday 22 June to Sunday 24 June
Web: http://www.colonnadestigliano.com/monaco2012
Dress: black tie, Nehru jacket/sari
Basking in the high patronage of HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco and organized by Princess Catherine Colonna de Stigliano, the Summer Ball - now in its seventeenth year - is always taken as one of the first signs of the high season in the Principality. Last year's 'Animal Planet' theme had guests roaring with delight, as savage drumbeats and wild musical rhythms filled the air with passionate excitement.
For 2012, the organizers of the Monaco Summer Ball are once again planning a fantastic party, this time suffused with the perfumes, spice and exoticism of the East, as they prepare a magnificent weekend in the company of the Princes of Rajasthan.
Monaco is no stranger to the delights of the subcontinent. Last September the Galerie Carré Doré exhibited wonderful artworks based on the techniques of Rajasthani illustration, and in March 2011, the Principality played host to one of the most spectacular society weddings to have taken place there since that of TSH Princess Grace and Prince Rainier.
At this year's ball, guests of honour will include stars of the enormously successful Indian film industry Amitabh Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek Bachchan, along with fashion gurus Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla (between them celebrating a twenty-five year partnership), and Raghavendra Rathore.
And of course Prince Albert will be introducing his counterpart HRH the Maharana Shriji Arvind Singhji Mewar, head of the Royal House of Udaipur. The same family has ruled in Rajasthan since the 7th century, making it not only the longest ruling dynasty in the world, but also older than the Grimaldis by a further 500 years!
His Royal Highness's home city (above) is one of the jewels in the crown of Rajasthan. Located 400km southwest of Jaipur, in the north-west territory's lake district, the city has understandably earned the nickname the Venice of the East. And it is from this beautiful blue city and its surroundings that the inspiration has come for this year's colourful ball.
The glittering weekend, tickets for which are available from €400, starts at 8pm on Friday evening 22 June with a Masala cocktail dinner at the Beach Club followed by dancing at Jimmy'z nightclub.
On Saturday - after an energetic game of tennis or spa treatment at the Thermes Marins - guests will enjoy a 'Red Hot Indian Summer' aperitif from 2 till 5pm at the Sea Lounge before proceeding to the starlit Spice of Life Gala Dinner at the Salle des Etoiles in the Sporting Monte Carlo, with magical Indian cuisine from the expert kitchen of chef Talwinder Singh.
On Saturday, the revels continue to the beat of Bollywood from popstar Sonu Kakkar and Delhi-based DJ Sunny Sarid. And on Sunday, there the traditional breakfast and balmy brunch, served from 10.30am till 3.30pm on the terrace of the Hôtel de Paris followed by a traditional Indian Namaste or farewell.
As is customary, an auction will be held at the gala dinner to raise money for the Order of the Knights of Malta, a major NGO who play a legendary and unique role in managing hospitals and care centres worldwide.

In the worlds of folk, jazz and classical music, the exciting virtuosity of gypsy musicians has always been highly regarded, and since 1985 its leading exponents have been performing together as the Budapest Gypsy Symphony Orchestra. As well as traditional instruments such as cembalos and clarinets, the orchestra - dressed in colourful traditional costumes - features no fewer than sixty violins, six cellos and ten double basses. The ensemble bring to their playing an innate musicality, effortlessly handling quick changes of rhythm, colour, harmony and style.
In true central European style, the orchestra was formed spontaneously at the graveside of a violin legend, the soloist and conductor Sándor Járóka. The elegiac playing of fellow instrumentalists on that sad day suggested to them the idea of celebrating his life in the form of a full orchestra, and the '100 violins of Budapest' was born.
The concert at the Grimaldi Forum in Monaco will be conducted by Sandor Buffó Rigó and Jószef Csócsi Lenvaï, and the orchestra will play a brilliant programme blending traditional Hungarian gypsy music with great classical works by composers including Brahms, de Sarasate, Liszt, Johann Strauss, Rossini and Tchaikovsky.

What: Summer Jazz FestivalWhere: La Note BleueWeb:http://www.lanotebleue.mcContact: +377 93 50 05 02
La Note Bleue offers a great programme of live jazz throughout the summer, in a truly elegant setting
Between sky and sea, Anne and Alain Tanzi have come up with the perfect recipe for jazz-lovers from all over the world at La Note Bleue. If Monaco
sometimes seems a little parochial, this is the remedy. From Wednesday to Saturday and from 6.30 'round midnight', they're all going to
La Note Bleue: jazzmen, beach-bums, and lovers of Chef Paya's special menu.

Coming up: see sidebar
---

Named in tribute to famous Jazz saxophonist Barney Wilen, La Note Bleue in Monaco's Larvotto district is one of the premier jazz venues in Monaco. It also has its own restaurant, private beach and boutique. At its beating heart is the Lounge Bar, inspired by the architecture and colours of Marrakech, whose combination of olivewood, teak and unbleached cotton provides an atmosphere that's both sensual and cool. The Moroccan theme is continued in the establishment's product line, where you can buy not only branded t-shirts and perfumes, but also hand-crafted products from north Africa.

Concerts start at 6.30 from Wednesday to Saturday in a varied programme where everyone can find something to their taste. The atmosphere is perfect as live music drifts out on to the beach itself, while chef Laurent Paya provides a great international menu: his desserts have become classics in Monaco, including the delicious 'pastille Toblerone' - melted chocolate in crispy pastry, and an elegant vanilla and coconut fondant, perfect accompaniment to a summer night's jazz.

To coincide with the eighth Grand Prix de Monaco Historique, RM Auctions are once again holding an auction of some of the world's most desirable motor vehicles. Aimed at the serious collector and discerning enthusiast, the first auction on 11 May will be devoted to the Saltarelli Ducati Collection, one of the largest private collections of Ducati motorcycles ever to be offered at auction. Notable lots include two Ducati Desmosedici GP machines: a GP10 raced by Casey Stoner and a GP11 raced by Valentino Rossi. Peter Wallman of RM Auctions (Europe) is understandably excited: 'This is an exclusive opportunity to offer items that
are not normally available to the public... these are very unique pieces of Ducati
history.'1948 Ferrari 166 Inter Spider Corsa
The second auction, on 12 May, will concentrate on motor cars, with several classic sports cars including the 1948 Ferrari 166 Spider Corsa Fontana (chassis 0121, above). The sixth 166 Spider Corsa built, it is one of the most raced Ferraris in existence. It was entered in two Mille Miglias and two Targa Florios, and driven by such luminaries as Bracco, Maglioli, Frolian Gonzales and the Marzotto brothers. Now fully restored, it is expected to fetch between €1,100,000 and €1,800,000.
Other noteworthy cars include a 1974 Ferrari 308 GT4/LM (chassis 08020), specially designed
to compete in that year's Le Mans 24 Hrs race, and now estimated at between €580,000 and €680,000. Also on offer will be a 1968 Alfa Romeo Tipo 33/2 Daytona (chassis 75033-029), and a 1969 Alfa Romeo Tipo 33/3 (chassis 10580-023). With its 3-litre V8 engine capable of in excess of 420bhp, this car has an extensive competition history and is expected to go for offers over €600,000.
Another Le Mans participant, the 1950 Talbot-Lago T26 GS (chassis 110057) is widely considered one of the most beautiful of all postwar racing cars. It also participated in the 1952 Monaco Grand Prix and has an estimate of €1,150,000 to €1,500,000. Another French marque, the 1978 Rondeau M378 (chassis M378-001) is the unrivalled veteran of no less than nine Le Mans 24 Hour races, and is scheduled to take part in the Le Mans Classic in 2012. Its expected price tag is between €610,000 and €760,000.
Additional highlights include:
•	a rare 1958 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint Veloce Zagato (Est. €380,000 to €420,000);

•	a 1971 Ferrari 365 GTS/4 Daytona Spider, one of just 25 (Est. €800,000 - €1,000,000);

The Beauty of India

Suzanne Held's exhibition continues in Nice until May
Four years ago, the Grimaldi Forum in Monaco mounted a major exhibition of the work of photographer Suzanne Held. She has spent the last thirty years as a special correspondent, travelling the world and producing extraordinary and beautiful photographic collections of some of the most exotic places on earth. And now, visitors to Nice's Asiatic Arts Museum have the chance to share her vision of India in a new exhibition which runs till May.
Ever the adventurer, Held was the first journalist to cross the 5000m-high Tibetan plateaux into Nepal when the border was first opened, and with the aid of the army she covered the discovery of the great Lost City archaeological site in Columbia, the first European to do so.
She has published some thirty pictorial albums, including volumes on Vietnam, China, India, Nepal, Myanmar, Angkor, Thailand, Java, Bali, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Iran, Sri Lanka, Rajasthan and Japan, as well as the books 'Sur les routes de la soie' (On the Silk Route) and 'Himalaya - Monastères et fêtes bouddhiques' (Buddhist Monasteries and Festivals of the Himalayas) published by Gallimard.
An expert on Asia, Suzanne Held has visited India over forty times and travelled its length and breadth, and the current exhibition in Nice, which runs till May 2010, is the product of those journeys. Revealed in all its squalor and splendour, her pictures show the vibrancy of a culture which had clearly captivated her - one in which the sacred and profane mingle in streets and landscapes filled with colour and rhythm.
Fom the temple of the Sun at Korarak and camel racing across the lunar landscape of Pushkar in Rajisthan, from the floating dwellings of Kashmir to the lofty Taj Mahal, Held's pictures enable the visitor to this exhibition to imagine, for a transient moment, that they have been transported by magic carpet to the land of the lotus itself.

Tax havens: is your treasure as safe as you think?

Once the self-evident place to park your millions, tax havens are once more in the firing line
According to a recent report in the New York Times, the world’s tax havens are once again coming under scrutiny as the financial crisis shows little sign of abating. But what exactly is meant by 'tax haven'? Geoffrey Powell, former economic adviser to Jersey, defines the term quite simply as any jurisdiction which provides 'a composite tax structure established deliberately to take advantage of, and exploit, a worldwide demand for opportunities to engage in tax avoidance'.
The majority of these arrangements are attractive because they impose little or no corporate tax or personal taxes on payments to offshore companies that are owned and controlled and trade outside of that tax haven. Businesses will often use these companies as a shield to reduce higher rate (and sometimes basic rate) taxes in their own country of residence.
The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) began its campaign to clean up international tax discrepancies in 2000, with the publication of a blacklist identifying a number of jurisdictions as 'tax havens' according to its own criteria. While recognizing a jurisdiction's right to self-determination in the matter of whether to impose direct taxes at all (and if so, at what rate), there were three other considerations which remained troubling - whether there was sufficient transparency; whether there were laws that prevented the effective exchange of tax information with other governments; and whether there was an absence of a requirement that the activity be substantial.
Although 31 jurisdictions made formal commitments to implement the OECD’s standards of transparency at the time, a small number, including Monaco, remained on the list of 'uncooperative' havens. However, after these states agreed to adopt international standards, the OECD Committee on Fiscal Affairs removed all names from the blacklist, and currently there are no countries that have refused to cooperate with the OECD. The result of the crackdown on secrecy means that nearly $19 billion in additional taxes has now been collected from more than 100,000 wealthy individuals worldwide, according to the OECD.
However, this does not mean that there is no longer any 'black money' held in offshore accounts, and there are renewed pressures on both clients and banks to observe the new regulatory procedures. For example, under new regulations which come fully into effect in June, most world banks and other financial institutions will be required to report to the US tax authorities 'certain information about financial accounts held by US taxpayers, or by foreign entities in which US taxpayers hold a substantial ownership interest'.
'Taxpayers hiding assets offshore who do not come forward will face far
higher penalty scenarios as well as the possibility of criminal
prosecution,' are the stern words of the US Internal Revenue Service. In the current climate, it may seem to some people outrageous that world governments should be benefitting at the expense of individuals, and indeed the financial institutions themselves, who under the US law noted above are also liable to a 30% withholding tax for refusal to diclose.
Others, however, believe that the tightened rules - as well as producing a more honest, legitimate and transparent system - may prompt institutions to channel their resources into simpler and more reliable financial products for a growing global investment market, particularly those from emerging economies.

The development will enable manufacturers of start/stop or micro-hybrid vehicles to improve fuel economy compared with that of conventional technologies.
The award for Excellence in the Field of Environmental Technology Development was won by GreenCom Networks, a German company whose Energy Information Brokerage platform enables distributed energy management for utilities.
Tendril, a US Energy Platform company delivering end-to-end consumer engagement products, applications and services, took the award for Excellence in the Field of Environmental Technology Commercialization.
Groupe Signe at the Villa Paloma

Street art comes to the museum in this new retrospective of a revolutionary period of history
What: Groupe Signe 1971–1974
Where: Nouveau Musée National de Monaco, Villa Paloma
When: 21 April to 17 June 2012
Even before the Soviets rolled their tanks into Prague in late 1968, revolution was in the air. In the US, anti-Vietnam protests were swiftly followed by race riots sparked by the assassination of Martin Luther King; in France, the greatest
general strike in history took place, with ten million workers occupying the
factories; and in Monaco, artists Claude Rosticher, Roland Marghieri, Michel Cresp and Pierre Lequienn were putting together their manifesto for a new cultural protest movement called 'Groupe Signe'.
Between 1971 and 1974, in reaction to what they saw as the twin evils of advertising and social conformity, Groupe Signe organized a number of iconoclastic actions in order to broaden public awareness. Their aim, the re-casting of the world according to a greater poetic vision. Their art expressed itself in the street or other public spaces with pop-up installations in which everyone could take part, and in which everyone had a stake.Works were composed of scrap or recovered materials, and tackled themes linked to daily life and deviations in society.A new exhibition, curated by the Groupe Signe, opens this week at the Villa Paloma, one of the two hubs of the new National Museum of Monaco. Presenting documentation and archive materials from the group's original
performances, the event gives an account of their activities in Monaco and environs, as well as in neighbouring France. The hope is to create a platform
that will allow an exchange of opinion, hopes and dreams for a better future, however utopian.
Schoolchildren will be
invited to workshops to build hot air balloons, debates will be
organized with students, and the public will be invited to voice their
opinions on the exhibition, art and life. 'This retrospective is pertinent', the 140-page bilingual catalogue reminds the visitor, 'because the questions raised forty years ago are unfortunately still relevant today, and because the practice of art remains one of the best solutions'
This exhibition has been organized with the support of the Government of the Principality of Monaco, the Association of the Friends of the Museum and UBS.
-
Villa Paloma, which dates from the early 20th century, is one of the finest patrician residences in the Principality of Monaco. Originally built for private use, it was sold to the state of Monaco in 1995. In 2008 it was donated to the Nouveau Musée National de Monaco, which opened in 2010 under the direction of Marie-Claude Beaud. Since its opening, museum projects have been based in two locations, Villa Sauber (dedicated to performing and decorative arts) and Villa Paloma (showing projects linked to the cultural heritage and landscape analysis.)

People who make Monaco: Otto Kern

International perfumier and fashion designer Otto Kern talks about what makes Monaco special
Otto Kern is an international fashion and accessories designer living in Monaco. We asked him how he first became interested in the world of fashion, and what he loves about living in Monaco.
My mother owned a shirt factory employing about 300-400 people. When I was 19 I had the idea of producing very slim-cut shirts for men using special prints and materials which were previously only used in womenswear and more specifically women's dresses. I was the first person to use these fabrics and designs for men's shirts. In fact in Germany I became known as the King of Shirts!
In my youth, I played drums and trumpet in the evenings - in fact it was money from gigs that financed my first fashion expo in Cologne in 1970. On the next stand to me was a small company called Hugo Boss, who at that time only made suits, so I ended up making shirts for Hugo Boss for several years.
I later developed the product to include suits and ties and then eventually perfumes. Later I sold the company in order to focus on Fragrances, but still act as a consultant to the Otto Kern brand. Apart from your day-to-day business, if you had to choose a different occupation from your multitude of interests, what would it be?
Well, I love to cook, and I'm passionate about art as well as music. I can't imagine life without any of these things - it's like asking someone with three children to choose their favourite - it isn't possible, I love them all so much! I'm also passionate about interior and exterior design which is now my main activity as well as my creative work for my perfumes. I've also owned an F3 team and driven sports cars; and I love my tennis, so the Monaco Country Club is one of my top three places to spend my time. The others are the Rampoldi Restaurant and of course the Opera Garnier - I am a member of the 'Friends of the Opera', and attend whenever I can.
I’ve lived in Monaco for 13 years and in France for many years before that. I feel totally at home in France and am totally integrated in the French lifestyle. In fact when I am in Germany I feel very French/Monegasque, more so than German. The way of life in France has always suited me, in Germany it's all about work work work!Recently, you celebrated the 40th anniversary of your business. What’s been the secret of your success?
I never compete with others, there are lots of bigger brands and lots of smaller ones, I’ve never compared myself to them but just done my own thing- and the brand has become bigger and bigger. As for myself, in all that time I haven't changed a bit- still young at heart and crazy as ever!
You're a well-known figure in the social life of Monaco, and you appeared in ‘Faces of Monaco’, the book published in 2009 about the Principality.
Yes, I’m very engaged on the Monaco social scene and also in several charities. ‘Faces of Monaco’ is something very close to my heart because it raised money for the Special Olympics. I still actively promote this cause here and in Germany, and organise fundraising events in Monaco. For instance, the world championship football contest for mentally disabled participants is here in Monaco and I take care of the German participants during this event.
As a Monaco resident it’s extremely important for me to support Monaco charities. If you have the privilege of living in Monaco you can never forget those less fortunate than yourself.

Where: Nouveau Musée National de Monaco, Villa Sauber
When: Daily until Sunday 20 May
Admission: €6 (free for under-26s)
The word celebrity tends to conjure up a vision of catwalks, elegant gowns and wedding dresses rather than homely knitwear, but Pringle of Scotland, one of the world's best known brands, is determined to change that impression with their sponsorship of the current exhibition at Monaco's new National Museum on Avenue Princesse Grace.
The Villa Sauber is hosting a fascinating display based on the archives of the princess's personal wardrobe, focusing especially on the clothes she wore during her Hollywood career. With historical research and reconstruction undertaken by students from Central Saint Martins art school in London, 'Princess Grace: More Than an Image' presents an intimate portrait of the princess from an entirely new angle.
Even as a princess, it was Grace Kelly's way to be happy with herself rather than any special image of herself, a point well made in the January 1955 article in Time magazine:
'Almost every morning, a slim figure in a polo coat, leading a small black poodle on a leash, emerges from one of Manhattan's cliff houses on East 66th Street. The doorman gives her a cheery "Good Morning, Miss Kelly." But outside, no head turns. For in her low-heeled shoes and horn-rimmed spectacles, actress Grace Kelly is all but indistinguishable from any other well-scrubbed young woman"
In the same article, she is defiant about not courting the world of the paparazzi: "I think it's nobody's business what I wear to bed... A person has to keep something to herself, or your life is just a layout in a magazine.'
Finally, she reveals her annoyance that her movie Green Fire was advertised using her face applied to a bosomy green-gowned torso not her own. "I don't want to dress up a picture with just my face," she said, "If anybody starts using me as scenery, I'll do something about it."
It is this quotation which gave the organizers the idea of discovering the person behind the image, the central theme of the whole project, which also includes recreations of archive pieces by students of the St Martins MA Fashion course. The exhibition, which ends on 20 May, is a prelude to the launch of a capsule knitwear collection, inspired by the exhibition, to be be designed by BA Fashion Design students. This will be on show in the same location from September 2012.

In the second and final set, there was a brief rally from Djokovic before Nadal broke back to take the serve and the match with a final ace against which the world number one stood no chance.
Things had been looking up for Djokovic as he advanced to the final by beating off a challenge from World number 7 Tomas Berdych 4-6 6-3 6-2; but Nadal, whose record in Monte Carlo is unsurpassed, proved once more to be Djokovic's Nemesis on his home ground, despite the fact that the Serb had beaten off the Spaniard in their last seven meetings.
Upset by his grandfather's death on Thursday, Djokovic was never going to be in top form, but he has on many occasions graciously acknowledged that Nadal remains the best in the world on clay, and now Nadal has proved unstoppable in his retention of a title that in the last eight years has proved to be a more than adequate preparation for a following victory in the French Open
Read more...

Web:http://www.monte-carlorolexmasters.comLATEST NEWS: Djokovic to meet Nadal in finalMonte Carlo resident Novak Djokovic, who last week was awarded the prestigious Vermeil Sport medal of Monaco for his outstanding contribution to physical education and sport, beat off a challenge from sixth seed and world number 7 Tomas Berdych, to set up a final against seven-time Monte Carlo Masters champion Rafael Nadal
--
All eyes are on the clay courts of the Monte Carlo County Club this week
as world number two Rafael Nadal begins his campaign to lift the Monte
Carlo Tennis Masters trophy for the eight successive year. Were he to do
so he would add yet another glittering record to an already astonishing
career. But some, including Nadal himself, are already
beginning to question how long that career can last. Plagued by
successive knee injuries, the Spanish tennis legend has increasingly
felt uneasy about his abilities, especially since having to pull out of
the Miami Masters last month.
But Nadal is nothing if not a
battler. His performance on clay courts is widely acknowledged to be
among best in the game, and in six of the last seven years he has used
the Monte Carlo victory as a springboard to ultimate success at the
French Open.Watch the Rolex Masters live on the official website
And then there is Novak Djokovic. Winner of the last
three grand slam tournaments - Wimbledon, the US Open and the Australian
Open - the world number one, who is a resident of Monaco, would dearly
love to win in Monte Carlo but has so far failed to break Nadal's
astonishing grip on his home tournament. Can he do so this year? Watch
this space...About the Masters
The 106th Tennis Masters takes place over the course of one week from 14 April to 22 April. This year, an exceptional main draw sees 45 top-flight players battling it out on the clay courts of the Monte Carlo Country Club in what is always a nail-biting starter to the summer's tennis tournaments. Eight of the world's top ten players (including of course the current ranking world number 1, Novak Djokovic, and his arch-rival the world number 2, Rafael Nadal) are here, as is Andy Murray, currently the world number 4 but ever hopeful of achieving that all-important boost in the rankings.
The tournament is one of nine in the annualATP World Tour Masters 1000 series, and always attracts large crowds to witness the cream of men's tennis striving for a share in the nearly €2.5 million prize pot.
In 2011, Nadal stamped his mark on the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters when he became the first player in history to win the same tournament seven times in a row, defeating fellow Spaniard David Ferrer in straight sets. Any thoughts of his gaining an eighth crown will be tempered by the fact that Novak Djokovic - himself a Monaco resident - has been going from strength to strength, winning three Grand Slam tournaments and the most recent Australian Open. Added to this, and a considerable pressure for Nadal, has been a continuing history of knee problems, the most recent of which caused him to lose out on a potential final place in last week's Miami Masters.
Other hopefuls to look out for in the list below are Czech Tomas Berdych (currently world no 7) and tenth-placed John Isner. And the celebrities are not confined to the court: watching their every move from the stands will be former world number one Björn Borg.Line-up of players:Name Nat RkNovak DJOKOVICSRB1Rafael NADALESP2Andy MURRAYGBR4David FERRERESP5Jo-Wilfried TSONGAFRA6Tomas BERDYCHCZE7Janko TIPSAREVICSRB9John ISNERUSA10Nicolas ALMAGROESP12Gilles SIMONFRA13Gael MONFILSFRA14Feliciano LOPEZESP15Kei NISHIKORIJPN16Richard GASQUETFRA17Alexandr DOLGOPOLOVUKR18Florian MAYERGER19Fernando VERDASCOESP20Juan MONACOARG21Jurgen MELZERAUT22Marin CILICCRO23Marcel GRANOLLERSESP24Radek STEPANEKCZE25Milos RAONICCAN26Viktor TROICKISRB27Kevin ANDERSONRSA28Stanislas WAWRINKASUI29Mikhail YOUZHNYRUS31Juan Ignacio CHELAARG32Julien BENNETEAUFRA33Philipp KOHLSCHREIBERGER35Bernard TOMICAUS36Carlos BERLOCQARG37Pablo ANDUJARESP38Ivan LJUBICICCRO41Michael LLODRAFRA43Denis ISTOMINUZB44Andreas SEPPIITA45Donald YOUNGUSA46Thomaz BELLUCCIBRA47Jarkko NIEMINENFIN48Juan Carlos FERREROESP49Lukasz KUBOTPOL51Olivier ROCHUSBEL52Robin HAASENED53Fabio FOGNINIITA55
Read more...

Festival of Food and Literature in La Colle-sur-Loup

When: 10am-7-pm, 3 June 2011
Where: La Colle-sur-Loup
Entry: Free
Two colours dominate La Colle-sur-Loup, the attractive mediaeval village nestled in the hills between Nice and Valbonne - rose and blue.
Rose, because of the ancient Rosa centifolia, which grows abundantly here, and whose petals have been cultivated for centuries for the perfume making industry of nearby Grasse. And blue, not only because of the brilliance of the Mediterranean sky and sea, but because of the vivid hue made famous in the 20th century by Yves Klein, who was buried here in the local cemetery not far from his family home.
Klein and his luminous IKB (as the blue is still known to designers all over the world) will be the focus of events on 3 June, since the 50th anniversary of the artist's death falls three days later. Colle sur Loup also happens to be the home of a huge variety of the region's best known gourmet restaurants, and they will all be participating in this year's second annual 'Food and Literature' festival: Restaurant Alain Llorca, Le Blanc-manger, Villa Nicolas Juste, La Vie Est Belle, La Bastide Gourmande, Le Mas d’Artigny, Auberge La Clé des Champs, le 541, and l’Atelier des Saveurs.Photo: Shakti/Creative Commons
Once again this year, some of the greatest names in the business will be arriving through the historic Canadel gate - along with hundreds of onlookers - to enjoy a day of top food and drink, and to let us in on some of the great secrets of French cuisine. Celebrated Michelin chefs, sommeliers, TV cooks, authors and restaurant critics will be there, all with only one thing in mind: getting to the heart of what makes a true gourmet experience.
Last year's guests included Alain Llorca - whose eponymous 'Cafe Llorca' restaurant opened in the Grimaldi Forum in December 2010; Arnaud Poette, head chef at the Hotel Eden Roc in Cap d'Antibes; and internationally-acclaimed chef Jacques Pourcel, who with his twin brother Laurent is about to add a twelfth restaurant to his stable - the SeaSens at the new boutique and spa 'Five', which is due to open in May on Rue Bivouac-Napoléon in Cannes.
What links all of the speakers, as well as their wealth of culinary experience, is that they are all authors of some of France's bestselling books on cookery and the history of cookery, and it's this that gives its name to the festival - it's not just about good food, but good writing, too.
During this special festival day, La Colle-sur-Loup will be celebrating cookery in every conceivable way, with drawing competitions, contests, parades, activities for kids, cooking classes, art exhibitions, demonstrations, wine tastings and cinema screenings.
But the event is far more than the sum of its parts: in this spectacular setting amid the limestone gorges of the river Loup, there's no more natural place for these leading lights to demonstrate the art form in which the French are arguably more famous than any other nation on earth.12 Balades Gourmandes: the recipes of Alain LlorcaGetting there:

International School of Monaco appoints new Director

ISM chooses a director with breadth, vision and impressive experience of international schools
The Price is Right
The International School of Monaco has announced the appointment of a new Director, who will take the reins of the principality's leading independent school in July this year.
John Price was educated at Cambridge University. He graduated with an MA in Modern and Mediaeval Languages before embarking on a teaching career at some of Britain's best known private schools including the Edinburgh Academy, Bedales, and Winchester, where he was undermaster, responsible for university admissions and curriculum development. John Price, new Director of the International School of Monaco
His first overseas post was in Malaysia, where he helped to set up a new sixth form college in Lembah Beringin, forty miles north of Kuala Lumpur. After a brief return to Winchester, he took up the headmastership of Jerudong International School in Brunei in 2004 and oversaw a major expansion from 950 to 1450 students, while also finding time to write for the Brunei Times as their education correspondent.
Most recently, Mr Price (who is fluent in Russian as well as French) has been head of a new British international school in Almaty, Kazakhstan, founded by and modelled on Haileybury, another well-respected British independent school.
The International School of Monaco is delighted to have appointed a head with such a notable academic track record. In a letter to parents, the governors express their hope that the new appointment will enable them to achieve new levels of excellence at what is already a great school.
Readers and prospective parents wishing to learn more about the British and International School systems 'from the horse's mouth' may like to know that John Price is also the author of a book 'Notes from the Jungle', which details his time in Malaysia while reflecting on current trends in international education.

Throw them all out?

Lee Robinson of Altana Wealth gives his latest thoughts and advice on a rapidly shifting market
I encourage everyone to read 'Throw Them All Out' by Peter Schweizer. This book covers abuses of power by members of American Congress, Senate and the President himself. Schweizer has some extraordinary revelations: Did you know it was legal for them all to insider trade? Did you know they are self policed by their own ethics committee? Did you know that $16 billion of the $20billion of Green loans handed out by the current administration has gone to companies that have directors who were part of the Obama fund raising campaigns?Whilst politicians taking advantage of the people is nothing new, the current scale and audacity of it all is amazing. However, this book has had next to zero coverage in the mainstream press. This in many ways is more worrisome because it means we end up listening to other, less controlled, sources - from the deeply paranoid to the very concerned. The interesting part is that outside of the sell-side cheerleaders, many unbiased commentators still come to the same rational conclusion that a debt crisis cannot be solved by adding more debt, and that a misallocation of capital is not fixed by misallocating capital on a greater scale (quantitative easing, higher taxes, bank bailouts) which will all ultimately fail.China
The China hard landing story is also getting more traction. Even the China macro bulls have struggled, with factory activity shrinking for the fifth month and foreign direct investment falling for the fourth consecutive month. We do not fully trust any government department figures, least of all the Chinese ones. We prefer to look at corporate sales and cash flow. From BHP Billiton to Phillips to Siemens we are getting the same message: Europe in recession, China slowing dramatically, USA mixed. So we are left in the same place as before: too much debt and governments with too much power.
Q1 2012 has seen an expansion of the market multiples in the face of earnings pressure. However, historically, the falling earnings usually win out and the indices fall. This past quarter saw the highest number of warnings since Q1 2009 – nearly 500 by global CEOs, with the ratio of negative to positive warnings at 1.5x. No wonder US insiders are selling shares at a rate of thirteen for every share bought. To us this continues to be a trading market. Buy the dips and sell the rallies whilst keeping an eye on bank credit spreads which are starting to move out again towards the danger zone.Back to the Future?
Another worrying parallel with the 1930s is the rise of protectionism. Already we have pressure from national governments for banks to lend at home and even numerous advertising campaigns to promote holidays at home. On 3 April the Bundesbank said that it would no longer accept bank bonds backed by the governments of Greece, Portugal and Ireland. The Austrian central bank followed suit the next day. This is yet another hole in the European dam that will grow and cause further problems. Keep an eye on subordinated banking spreads particularly in France and Spain. Credit markets will continue to guide decisions in a deleveraging world.
On our marketing travels we meet many patriotic investors that trust their governments to eventually do the right thing but almost all of them believe the inflation numbers to be a huge underestimate of their own personal inflation. The increases in unit labour costs and the strong increase in the oil price over 3 and 12 months have been ignored by the deflationists. The supposedly one-off VAT and sales tax rises have hurt. The increases in school fees and medical insurance have hurt even more. Even those who believe we have a Japan-type decade ahead of us concede that inflation is coming. We believe inflation or stagflation is already here. Incomes for the working consumers are still under pressure. Real disposable incomes in the USA are now lower than in 2006! Current policies are making matters worse not better.
Finally we would recommend reading Bill Gross’s excellent piece ‘Zero-based money risks trapping recovery’ published in the FT on 6 Feb. Opportunities are coming though as prices fall. Stay liquid, organise your investment vehicles either directly or via due diligence on others and be ready to invest as the opportunities arise.
