Chris Bonington brings the mountain to Monaco

Who: Sir Chris Bonington, CBE
What: Celebrity Lunch
Where: Café de Paris, Place du Casino
When: Friday 26 November 2010

Guest speaker at the Café de Paris Celebrity lunch on 26 November will be Chris Bonington, Britain’s best-known climber and one of the most successful expedition leaders in the world. He and his team are particularly well-known for being the first to conquer both the south face of Annapurna and the south-west face of Everest. With more than twenty further first ascents to his name, he can truly be thought of as one of the greatest international adventurers.

It’s thirty years since, with Doug Scott, Bonington made it to the summit of one of the world’s toughest mountains, Baintha Brakk (known as the Ogre) in the Karakoram range –  a feat that was not to be repeated by another climber until 2001.

Over the years, Bonington’s experience in expedition leadership has made him not only a celebrity but an indispensible authority in an number of leading organizations: he has been President of the British Mountaineering Council and President of the Council for National Parks, and in the business sector he has achieved success as Chairman of Berghaus, Britain’s most successful outdoors clothing brand. His achievements have brought a host of very special awards: not only the Founders Medal of the Royal Geographical Society, but also a Commander of the Order of the British Empire, and in 1996 the ultimate accolade of a knighthood.

With 14 books and numerous television programmes under his belt, Bonington is in great demand as a speaker, but mountaineering remains his greatest motivation as he sets out to conquer still further and more inaccessible peaks.
